Help me, Dear Friend
An Interesting Development
July 13th, 1793
Dear friends,
I have received interesting news.
It has been relayed to me that Girondist Charlotte Corday wishes to speak with me this afternoon.
The woman claims to have knowledge of a planned Girondist revolt.
I am pleased that she has decided to stand on the right side of history, albeit a little surprised.
I will update you all with more information following our meeting.
Yours truly,
JPM
My Simple Request
July 9th, 1793
Dear friends,
Today, I ask you for a favor.
Up until very recently I have made a point to attend every National Convention meeting I can in order to best participate in the affairs of our Revolutionary government.
Unfortunately, due to worsening health conditions, I am no longer able to attend these meetings.
Do not fear. I plan to continue writing for L’Ami de Peuple from home and participating the best I can with the aid of my colleagues.
I ask you to keep your spirits high, and participate as loudly and as fiercely as you can on my behalf.
Hoping for a speedy recovery.
Yours truly,
JPM
More Good News!
June 2nd, 1793
Justice prevails!
Today the Girondists have officially been expelled from all official offices. Now that those vile moderates are gone, we can finally make France the Enlightened republic it has always meant to be.
May the guillotine continue to fall, until France is drained of the blood that ruined it.
All hail the Common Man.
Vive le révolucion!
Triumphant!
April 24th, 1793
Dear Friends,
Today, I was put on trial to for my involvement in what has come to be referred to as the September Massacre. As many of you know, the Girondists have been working in tandem with the National Convention for quite some time now to take down the Revolution. They fear our spirit, our progress. But we have become a roaring river and our progress cannot be halted.
I have officially been acquitted of my “crime.” Though it was I who gave the speech, it was our hearts combined that inspired my words. Thank you for fighting this fight and inspiring me daily to continue standing up for what is right.
The tide is turning in our favor.
Yours truly,
JPM
A Change in Heart
March 19th, 1793
Dear Friends,
I come to you today with a change of heart. As you may know, when I first started L’Ami de peuple I wished nothing but to help spread the ideas of the Enlightenment to those in greatest need of them: our country’s leaders. As a learned and respected man I was sure that my firm yet gentle suggestions would be well received by the Constituents Assembly. Unfortunately, this assumption was quickly debunked. Every letter I have sent has been completely ignored. Yet, upon reading my publications, they berate me with threats and false accusations. The Constituents Assembly has become a laughable institution, serving its own representatives first and its constituents… never. Are these the kind of people we dare call our leaders?
It was my hope that we could work together with our government to bring an end to these injustices, but now I know the truth. Neither persuasion nor persistence will give us freedom. Our only option is force.
Friends, please join me in this war against tyranny. The only way we will take back what is rightfully ours is if we fight for it, even if that means taking it from the dead hands of our oppressors.
The only way to fight fire … is with fire.
Join me.
Yours truly,
JPM
We Are Hungry
February 25th, 1793
Today, our people are hungry.
I am hungry, and you probably are too.
It has been a long and hard winter, and despite our progress, our people still suffer from lack of food.
Our workers toil without bread to sustain themselves. Mothers are scrambling to simply to keep their children alive.
And yet, the aristocracy keeps their pantries full.
Why then, do the bread prices continue to soar? How is it that our men suffer from wage cuts and layoffs, while the factory owners continue to lay in the lap of luxury?
Glass is breaking. Currency and closed signs are obsolete when a country’s cry for help is unanswered for so long. Together we are storming the streets.
We are hungry… and not just for food. For justice.
