Traditional artist; draws a model sitting in front of them exactly as the model is posed.

People: Wow! How can you just look at something and draw it like that? Amazing.

Digital artist; draws from several photographs, by looking at them and drawing, exactly as the traditional artist did, but adding more elements to the painting from other references and combining it all to come together as something unique.

People: Um, you used references. That’s cheating. It’s better when it’s all from your imagination.

But that’s different! Anyone who has tried both photo and live references knows the difference between drawing from life and a photograph. When you draw from life you need to translate something three dimensional and complex into a flattened image. That’s half the battle! Every sway of your body shows a slightly varied image and it’s an excellent challenge and wonderful way to learn. When drawing from a photo half the work is already done. Photo references can be great for objects you don’t have access to but they will never live up the the real thing do pretending they’re the same is ridiculous. egardless of medium, drawing from a photo is much less challenging than drawing from life and will result in a lack of understanding for the process of flattening a three dimensional object. Anyways, that’s just my two cents. I happen to do both digital and traditional art so I feel it is very much relevant. When you “cheat” by only ever using photo reference the only person you really cheat is yourself, denying yourself the ability to truly understand the complexity of the world around you.

I’ve done both as well. I’ve done traditional for years before moving to digital. I’ve drawn from live models for four years, and I’ve drawn traditionally from photographs. I’ve drawn digitally from photographs and I’ve done the mixture of different references digitally.

The most challenging is digitally from photographs because you don’t have a live model to pose for you in the exact angle you want so I have to imagine a slight angle shift in digital from photographs.
