Travel diary, Morocco
We flew into Marrakech on the sunday (12th of July), I was travelling with a friend, called Jade. Though we were landing in the big city, our destination was a tiny village on the Atlantic Coast : Sidi Kaouki. We arrived in Sidi after a 3 hour drive. It’s a tiny town, 25 minutes away from Essaouira - a beautiful portuary city (that was a set for Game of Thrones).
We arrived during the ramadan, which meant the already-small Sidi Kaouki was even calmer than usual. Our house was less than a mile away from the beach, which made our mission quite easy: surfing.
The high-tides were in the morning/mid-day which meant we were at the beach every day around that time, and I often stayed to surf a bit longer, so I got a nice weird tan from the heavy sun! (see picture)
We met a surfer called Ali, he took us to surf on dunes with broken surfboards... An amazing experience though the sand burned our feet when we climbed back up the huge dunes.
After a week surfing and swimming, we spent three days exploring Marrakech. We slept in the Medina, and the temperatures were ridiculous: more than 50° at times. However, the city is very energetic - and despite hot days, an incredible amount of life and scenes are right there to be discovered. I didn’t quite like Marrakech. Perhaps it’s because I fucking love surfing so much, when I had to leave, anything appeared lesser than great. Or maybe just because there’s an agressive atmosphere in the highly roamed streets. The tourists are often a problem in big cities, and I believe a certain amount of efforts should be given from a tourist visiting a country: dress according to the culture, behave honestly and responsibly... But there, the residents and the tourists just didn’t live in synch. I’m not going to get deeper into the criticism of Marrakech because it’s still a beautiful place and I did love my time there (don’t get me wrong), but it’s just not a place for me is what I’m saying.
We took our train back on the Wednesday 22cnd of July, all tan and happy to set foot back in France, to finally eat our french baguettes and drink some good wine.
I’ll see you soon Morocco, I love your beaches and your surf is good, your food is kind and your people are honest.
