Thinking about the ableism directed at Berdly

This kid is one heck of a win for autistic rep that ISN'T infantalized or their disability is convenient for everyone around them!

He's a bit annoying as all teenagers are. He can't read the room all the time, he misinterprets what people mean (especially if they don't say what they mean, which is a big reason for the misunderstanding between him and Noelle), etc-

he's messy like me, and I love him for it, because he makes me feel SEEN. He's not perfect, and that's why he IS perfect

...And the majority of the fandom treats him like a creepy, one-dimensional incel...

The second you GIVE Berdly a boundary, he wholeheartedly accepts it and follows it. Incels DON'T do that. He just doesn't always understand when he's making others uncomfortable, especially if they're doing everything BUT being direct about it.

I've seen people legitimately wish death upon this teenaged boy just because he makes situations awkward sometimes. Thanks fandom gang thats??? super invalidating and messed up, actually??? I feel so safe and welcome /sarc

there's several whole posts about it on here I've reblogged if you wanna go digging on my blog, but I digress.

I think the problem is that the fandom is made up of a range of 13yos to adults, which means a good chunk of the fandom just doesn't have as good critical thinking skills as some others. (this isn't inherently age-based. I know a lot of really thoughtless adults and really thoughtful teenagers. But immaturity does play a part in some cases)

And also like. Media illiteracy epidemic. And also ableism in general.

I've been seeing a good deal of discussion about Kris not telling Susie why Noelle left or what happened with her dad, and it's understandable why people frown on them for it. However, if you pay attention to how things play out, you'll realize it wasn't exactly done out of ill intent.

Aside from the fact that it would be SUPER OUT OF CHARACTER for them to not care about Rudy's health (seeing how they were literally praying for his welfare last Chapter), they weren't actually trying to stop her from seeing the Holidays! In fact, they were not only leading the way, but they were DOING SO WITHOUT OUR INPUT!

So why did they stop? Because Susie tried to investigate Asgore's shop. And so, because that would most likely lead to her discovering the code and compromising the plan/promise they'd been trying to fulfill before they even met her, Kris had to make the difficult decision to make the Dark World in hopes it would prevent her from ruining said plan/promise!

Remember, people! Kris doesn't do the wrong thing unless they feel it's for a really good reason, which has been a feature of literally every single important character in UTDR (i.e. Toriel using fire magic against Frisk to prevent them from leaving the ruins, Chara pressuring Asriel to aid their infamous buttercup, etc)!

“Hater Ralsei” is funny and all, but like pause for a second.

Have you stopped to unpack why Ralsei is a hater towards Flowery? Because it’s not because he’s annoying or unkind or destructive or any of the things Ralsei has been encouraging Kris to avoid the entire game.

In fact, he’s almost everything that Ralsei preaches. He serves lightners. He’s pacifistic. He’s kind and encouraging to all the darkeners. He wants to defy the prophecy, not for his sake, but for the sake of a lightener who is precious to him.

The only difference…. Is his honesty. Flowery is GENUINE. And No, faking his stats isn’t dishonesty. Quite the opposite. He’s not afraid to expose the system.

Flowery isn’t holding up the facade. He isn’t afraid to confront the prophecy head on at the cost of his own existence, just for the slim chance that he can make his lightener happy.

Do we all hate Flowery because he’s over-the-top and annoying? Maybe. But does Ralsei hate him for those reasons? Absolutely not.

Ralsei hates him because he is afraid of himself.

Interesting bit of information that’s easy to miss: when you pair Aqua and Orange together for a cafe conversation, Aqua’s reaction to Orange implies that this is the first time she’s seen Orange’s “human” form, saying something like “I didn’t even recognize you!” The way I read this is that the flowers didn’t all appear in the Dark World in the same place, so there was probably multiple instances of meeting each other “as humans” for the first time

You could of course, get multiple interesting fanfic concepts out of this, but the one I am currently most interested is Yellow meeting Blue for the first time looking like the most beautiful person he’s ever seen
