Hi there! I really like your art and I was wondering if you could answer one of my questions, how do you colour the hair for houseki no kuni characters?

Well, this one is tricky to answer, because honestly my way to color gem hair is so inconsistent ;3; but basically:

Step 1: Flat colors.

Step 2: Adding a light gradient, plus darker strands in the middle (not the edges) of the hair parts. Those darker strands are done with a Multiply layer.

Step 3: Erasing the ends of the dark strands so that they won’t look too “blunt” (sorry idk how to explain properly in words ;;), plys outlining the hair with an Overlay layer.

Step 4: Color adjustment with an Overlay layer. I usually use shades of red and blue for this one, but it depends on the picture’s atmosphere, gem color, gem luster etc.

Step 5: Some highlighting with a Fine Flat brush + Luminosity layer at low opacity.

Step 6: Final highlights with Luminosity layer and coloring the lineart.

That’s the basic of my technique— from step 6 onwards it’s extremely inconsistent and i honestly lose track of what i do.

For faceted gems, i usually draw random triangles with the same color as the hair, but in darker and lighter tones, then i set the layer as Screen, make a copy of it,rotate the copy and set the copy as Shade or Multiply. I’m still working on that technique tho so it might not be that great rn.
