AMAZING
Yáterash, náterash, & sepíng: the Belter vocabulary of gravity
(NOTE: Words in lang belta (Belter) are pronounced with stress on the penultimate syllable. An accent on a vowel indicates that stress falls on that syllable in a particular word.)
Oye, kopeng!
One of the characteristic experiences of da livit da belta (Belter life) is birth and childhood in low- and zero-G. It affects Belter physiology, to the point that they can’t stand up or breathe properly at Earth’s gravity (1G). They require steroids and growth hormones to develop properly, even by Belter standards. It’s made clear that the more prejudiced among inner planet folk believe that “Belters aren’t even human anymore.” This is why one of the Belter slogans is Milowda na anyimal!, “We are not animals”. (Note: Belter does not add an -s to indicate plural; it’s implied by context, in this case milowda, “we, us”. Mi na anyimal is “I am not an animal”.)
Inner planet folk talk about “gravity” because it is a constant force all their lives. Most Earthers never get even as far as Luna, so zero-G is a purely theoretical concept for them. The culture’s largely unchanging experience of gravity is reflected in that there is one word for it.
In the Belt, gravity comes with an on/off switch as well as a volume knob. Shipboard experience of gravity varies from floating in zero-G to G forces strong enough to kill the crew, depending on how hard the drive is burning. Different space stations will have different gravities depending on how big they are and how fast they are spinning. None will be at a full G.
The multiple words Belters use to describe their cultural experience of gravity reflects this lived reality.
One way to mimic gravity is through rotation; on a rotating space station “down” is the direction of the centripetal force. The word for this kind of gravity is sepíng, “spin".
One artifact of spin gravity is the Coriolis effect. Close to the core, the station is spinning so quickly in such a tight arc that if you drop something, although it’s pulled in straight line towards the floor, by the time it hits the floor the floor (and the room above it) has moved; rather than fall straight down, it will look like it’s falling in a spiraling curve. The further away from the core, the longer the arc of travel, and the less Coriolis one experiences.
Watch Miller pour liquids. In the governor’s office, he pours water into a glass and it falls in a straight line. That means they’re pretty close to the outside skin of Ceres, because there is no visible distortion to the water stream. When Miller is going through Julie’s dating profile to find the data-broker, he pours a brown spirit off to the side of the cup, and it pours in an arced stream, implying that he’s someplace towards the core where the Coriolis is much stronger.
Similarly, when he’s interviewing Gia the prostitute after her client gets murdered, he shares a glass of something, probably with the excuse of helping her calm her nerves. We don’t see Gia drink, but when it cuts back to Miller, rather than “raise a glass” in a toast, he swings the cup in front of him in a flat circle before taking a sip. The Rosse Buurt district is coreward, and maybe that’s a Belter way of toasting the other person while close to the core without flinging the drink out of the glass.
Another example of sepíng is when Naomi is guiding everyone through the Eros service tunnels. At one point, she drops a pinch of dust in front of her and looks at how it corkscrews to the floor. That gives her an orientation and lets her know what direction she wants to go. (GIF via @CarlBrwn)
The other way Humanity mimics gravity in space is linear acceleration. The Epstein drive is hyper efficient, doesn’t require the ejection of reaction mass, and can accelerate a ship far faster than a human could ever tolerate, drugs or no. Epstein drive ships in The Expanse are built like a skyscraper, floors stacked on top of each others, with the engine in the basement. As long as the ship is actively accelerating nose first or decelerating engines first, the crew experience gravity.
A point-to-point trip would involve accelerating to half-way, cutting the drive, “flipping” the ship using “teakettle” thrusters (water-ejecting maneuvering thrusters). Once the ship is repositioned and flying engines-first, one fires up the drive again and decelerates towards the final destination.
The nouns for the on/off state of ship-based gravity in Belter experience are yáterash (“under thrust”) [literally “yes thrust”] and náterash (“thrusters are off”) [literally “no thrust”].
The belter word for “to jump” is du push. Because in zero-G, that’s essentially what a jump is. And if you think it through, belters probably think of jumping with their hands. Jump in terms of a leap is salta.
Kaka felota means “floating shit”. It’s what happens when the toilet backs up during náterash, and is also used where an Earther might say “bullshit”, and probably how they express general displeasure. We don’t know if Nick has given us the straight up verb “to float” (or if he has, we haven’t captured it in the tékidoc yet), but it’ll probably end up being similar to felota.
No doubt there are other gravity-related words regarding navigation. Owbit is the Belter word for “orbit”. We know “slingshot club” is an extreme sport among Belters, but we don’t have the Belter for it yet. So keep your eyes peeled for more physics vocab. As always, Nick Farmer is the final arbiter of all things lang belta. Follow his twitter if you haven’t already.

The Expanse Tarot
Fun time designing and researching for this! I’ve got almost everyone mapped out for the Major Arcana, except for The Sun, because no one is happy enough to be The Sun in The Expanse universe.
A little Praxos ficlet for @almostdefinitelydying :3
When Mei spotted Amos through the glass front door she squealed and launched herself from the dinner table. Prax gave a look of surprise then smiled and waved him in. Amos didn’t have the door open an inch before Mei wrenched it open and threw herself into his arms. He laughed and walked inside.
“You’re getting big, Pumpkin.” Amos smiled at her and bumped foreheads before setting her down then taking the seat Prax offered.
“She’s grown two inches and added 20 more plant names to her vocabulary,” Prax said, beaming with pride, offering Amos a plate of food.
“Yeah! Daddy, can we go to the park after dinner? I wanna show him all the trees I know now!”
“Honey, he’s probably tired and wants to-”
“Nah, been in a crash couch at 3g for a week. Walking around sounds great.”

I was thinking about Praxos and plants and wrote a tiny thing! Thank you to everyone who’s following @prax-amos, I’m so glad there are so many of us Praxos fans out there. ❤️️
The Expanse, Prax/Amos, rated G
There’s a plant called the Mimosa pudica, the shy plant, so called for its seismonastic response to touch – the lightest touch will cause it to shrink away, leaflets folding themselves up one by one, a chain reaction to protect itself from harm.
When Amos takes Prax’s face in his hands and kisses him, Prax feels like M. pudica in reverse, unfolding himself piece by piece. His lips part, his spine straightens, his stomach unknots. The reaction is fast, a trembling openness that sweeps through his body, all the way down to uncurl his fingers. M. pudica makes itself small and sharp in response to touch but Prax finds himself open, defenseless.
Would any touch trigger this response? Perhaps it’s only Amos’s – his big, sure hands, the confident pressure of his mouth, the slow warm push of his tongue. Not a seismonastic response, then, but something different, something tangled up in the entirely human realm of connection and trust.
For once, Prax is satisfied not knowing the exact mechanism. It’s enough to experience it, leaning into Amos, his body unfurling, his heart blooming in his chest.
OH MY GOD THESE ARE MY FAVORITE PLANTS AND THIS IS A GREAT FIC AND AHHH
I don’t even ship this remotely but this is beautiful

When the Sun Shines on Medina Station prompt fill for @simply-sithel
*The picset was a little smaller than required, so I have added a summary to go along with it. I am also working with the idea that Florence has been in talks with Ty and Daniel to play Clarissa.
The crew takes several days to resupply and take a rest while passing through the gate. A lot has changed since they were there last, most notably the fresh supply of vegetables and the new crop of flowering orchards.
Entertainment is abundant, however, Clarissa finds herself volunteering to ready a new plot in preparation for the next seeding, desperate to feel soil between her fingers.
Amos had plans, but the excitement on Peache’s face when she told him her plans and the promise of Ganymede’s finest brew at the end of it has him putting them off in exchange for a day in Medina’s artificial Sun.
fixin’ to ride
So I got @jimandknuckles for the Expanse Fan Work Exchange, who prompted “The Roci’s machine shop has gear at counter level you can sit on that hums along at up to 7000rpm.” I decided to try my hand at one of the ships you like, so I wrote Alex/Sandra Ip (from Babylon’s Ashes) in this one. It’s definitely NSFW, but contains no spoilers. I did however get a bit carried away, it’s it’s a bit longer than anticipated.
Hope you like it! It’s also on AO3 for reviews and the like!
Alex is a pushover. He knows it. Sandra knows it. She’s pulling him along behind her to Engineering, going on about having an idea that he would love. Any idea that has to do with engineering just makes him nervous. But she wants him to follow, so he does. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t curious.
Amos keeps the machine shop in a state of constant organization. It had surprised Alex at first how immaculate Amos makes his spaces. Not that he ever considered their head engineer a slob. Sandra yanks him into Amos’s home base and hits the door controls to make it slide shut behind them. Grinning, Alex pulls her close, nuzzles at the side of her head.
“You know, darlin’,” he rumbles, thumbs drawing small circles over her hips. “If privacy is what you’re wantin’, there are safer places that Amos won’t wander into.”
Sandra pouts. “But nowhere near as fun. Besides…” She pulls out of his grip, boots clicking on the deck as she meanders backwards. Her eyes remain on his. Her hand moves to unzip her jumpsuit. Slowly. “This is where the surprise is. Sa sa ke what this room has that your cabin doesn’t?”
Alex manages to look around, an eyebrow raised. “Uh… risk of infection?”
Her resulting laugh is musical, and draws a genuine smile out of him. “No, cowboy, not that.” Her hips hit the counter, arms reaching back to brace herself. The gap in her jumpsuit widens. She doesn’t have a shirt on underneath it. Alex has no trouble keeping his eyes trained on her face. Her grin widens. She waves at the tools laid out on the counter. “It has these.”

ugh I want so much fanfiction fleshing out the subtleties of the physical slang of belters
So @the-roci is a monster who wanted angst for the Expanse Valentine’s exchange and since I’m generally bad at writing angst have Bobbie pining after Alex.
(vague spoilers for BA, not plot things just personal relationship things)
The Roci had been docked in station for three days now and she was savoring in the ability to stretch her legs a little. The Roci was a nice ship but didn’t offer much in the way of new scenery. It was also nice to be able to get away from the rest of the crew for a while; it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy being around them in fact it was far from that. Ever since they had spent time together on Mars the old attraction she had felt towards Alex had been resurfacing. Every casual touch, every laugh, every nice thing he said to her made her heart race. She found herself going out of her way to be in the same room as him, anything that would give them a chance to talk. The whole ordeal made her feel like a school girl with a crush and she couldn’t take it anymore. As soon as they had docked she had bolted. A breath of new air and a change of scenery would do her good.

Expanse Valentine’s Day Exchange ficlet for michiopa
for @michiopa who wanted sugary happiness for Naomi & Holden. Enjoy!
“Oh, ohhhhhh my god!” Naomi moaned. “This is so good.”
Holden curled his arm around her waist. “Told you I had something good,” he said, leaning his head against the crook of her shoulder.
“Yeah but you didn’t…” Naomi fell back against him, eyes fluttering closed in bliss. “You didn’t explain it well.”
“You can’t really explain something like this. You have to experience it.”
Naomi sucked the tip of her thumb clean and turned to face him. “How’d you even get a hold of this?”
