La Belle et la Bete Synopsis

This synopsis of the original novel is here for reference regarding the Beauty and the Beast essay over on fuckyeahyonicsymbols.  I am referring to the Blackdown Publications e-book edition translated by J. R Planché and adapted by Rachel Louise Lawrence which can be found here for about 2 bucks Canadian, so if you’re curious, it’s no major expense.   In the original tale, a novel written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740 (and I say ‘original’ with some looseness; the story bears similarities to older fables, especially Eros and Psyche, and other Animal Bridegroom tales, because There Are No New Stories), a young woman asks her merchant father to bring her back a simple rose from a business trip, rather than the lavish (read: greedy, expensive) requests of her five sisters. Returning home with his hopes for fortune dashed, poverty looming, and no presents acquired, he is caught in bad weather and forced to spend the night in an eerily empty castle or mansion, where he is treated as a revered guest by an invisible or hidden host.  At some point, the dear impoverished dad comes to the conclusion that since no lord or host has appeared, the whole lavish palace must be intended as a gift for him by a kindly spirit.  This is what happens when you let strange men into the house.  He therefore starts to gather small items of value such as he can carry, and starts mentally making plans of how much and what he will share with his 12 children.  Perhaps the Beast does not notice this colonial turn of events immediately, but he confronts the man when, about to leave the palace, he picks a rose from the gardens.  The Beast (a huge creature with an elephant’s trunk and scales, rather than the adorable singing bear-dog of the animated version) is naturally outraged at this abuse of his gentle hospitality and threatens to devour the old man.  The father pleads for his life, hoping to inspire pity in the beast by telling him of his 12 children, for whom he hoped to bring home presents, especially to Beauty, the youngest.  The Beast softens a little and says that if one of the man’s six daughters will come in the next month to take her father’s place for eternity, the Beast will not hunt him down for revenge, repeating three times that it must be of her own will, or not at all. Finally making it home to his children, the old man resolves not to say anything and spare his children the burden of offering themselves as sacrifice, but when he comes home with only a beautiful cloak, a rose, and mounted on a fairy-steed, the story is bound to come out.  Beauty’s older sisters immediately throw her under the proverbial bus and demand that she take the responsibility since it was her request for a rose which brought the unfortunate situation about.  Beauty, being at least as self-abnegating as she is pretty, accepts this argument as reasonable and agrees to go to the Beast.  Although the Beast has never said that he would eat the volunteer, that is the assumption that the whole family makes going forward with the discussion. So Beauty does her duty and goes to the Beast’s palace in her father’s place, and is also allowed to send home a truly massive pile of treasure in trunks which are bigger on the inside, carried by fairy horses. From here, Beauty spends many days in luxury. The food is fantastic, the gardens extensive and perpetually warm and blooming even in winter, there are dozens of amusing monkeys and parrots who converse with her through the day, and she has access to three windows which show her far away operas and theatres, through use of cunning reflections. This part sounds weirdly like she is describing a television, and she never uses the word mirror, but I suspect that this must be the origin of Disney’s magic mirror.  She only has to speak to the Beast briefly at dinner each night, a few sentences a night, for he is described as very dull and ineloquent, and he frequently asks her to marry him (or sleep with him; this varies from translation to translation), always receiving a “no”. Meanwhile, Beauty begins to have vivid lucid dreams of a gorgeous young man who falls in love with her immediately, and whom she begins to refer to as “her Unknown” or “her lover”.  She finds a portrait of this same young man in the palace, but finds nothing strange about this.  Eventually, despite her lovely dreams and luxurious days, Beauty becomes bored and lonely.  She requests that she be allowed to visit her family, at least to let them know that she is well and has not been devoured.

About halfway through the novel, we reach the end of what Disney decided would be the full tale.  The Beast, though ugly and dull, wins the heart of  Beauty and she agrees to marry him, and she wakes to find herself sleeping next to the handsome Unknown prince of her dreams. The mother of the Prince shows up with the good Fairy who made all of this possible, that is, the one who made it possible for the Prince to escape the curse. As it turns out, she had been forced by war to take up the role of general for her kingdom when her husband died, and leave her infant son in the care of an ancient and powerful Fairy for his education. At some point, this Fairy stops So we have a strange deal made by a father with a powerful lord for ownership of the daughter, all for the price of a flower.
