ace combat 3
i’m a fool so i bought ace combat 7 so i could get the ace combat 5 preorder bonus but instead i decided i needed to play through all of 3 instead for some reason.
it’s a very cool game, with a sick UI and beautiful aesthetic that reminds me of what they did with ridge racer 4 but with more animation and that Production IG aesthetic going on.
there are serious GITS:SAC vibes happening here, with so many damn political dealings and megacorps. i cannot wait to see where this goes cuz apparently there’s a late game space mission complete with different physics.
in the meantime im gonna try hard to think about the flying physics and get better at them cuz i am doing seriously poorly with this and flying real inefficiently.
neko navy
neko navy is really good. it is fun to play for score, getting right in the enemy faces to get the big score bonuses. I’m pretty good, and can hold my own for most of the levels except the last two, which have a serious difficulty spike.
i’m gonna start using the actual practice option to practice those last two, especially that boss rush stage that i forgot about since i haven’t beat it in a long time. in the meantime i’m gonna try to complete a easy mode run and get those extra characters.
also should research the alt stage conditions, since there are def achievements that point to that being the case and im not sure what the unlock requirements are.
i definitely wish there was a slowdown button cuz i want slightly slower movement at those higher stages, so that’s the one problem i’ve had since it released on pc.
it’s overall very cute and lovely tho, i’m glad i have a second copy for on the go.

whip! whip!
it's a great little bubble Bobble style single screen action game. the grabbing and kicking can get a bit unwieldy so I gotta think a bit more, but it really makes finding the right angle and taking out foes satisfying
like bubble Bobble the real game is in playing efficiently and for score. you can grab enemies, but chaining the grab into a kick that takes out a big group nets you better bonuses and chances for extended life
movement of slow, but grabbing zips around the stage so using food to go faster is a legit strategy
ah I love it! been a while since I played a really good one of these

RAZED
been playing a lot of RAZED for review. not currently digging it tho i keep playing it cuz its not quite at the aggravation point where im putting it down entirely.
feels like it wants you to go fast and feel fluid but requires way too much precision for it. platforms are super narrow and there are often 90 or 180 degree turns that prevent you from having a clear sightline to what you need to do next, in addition to the fog.
which is annoying because while most games are way too cluttered this one is very clear about what it wants you to do, but forces you to do trial and error to get to it. smoother curves and better sightlines would make it way easier, and the amount of trial and error needed is annoying.
abilities also feel so limited that it cuts into the joy of movement. it feels so bad when you can’t even jump because you dont have energy.
i hope the next world has a good power cuz every single one of them so far has been annoying and apparently the thing that would make it great, unlimited energy, is locked behind an A rank on every level so fuck that.

SALT FIGHTER...IV?
played some more street fighter, this time sf4 with charlie. taught em some basic moves and concepts and did nothing but sweeps and jump kicks. still pretty hard to grasp and react to but way less overwhelm and they came back to play again. tried the handicap as well and knocked it down 0% health to see what it was like and that was exciting. maybe ill try more of those with longer matches to see what happens
also tried some Persona 4 Ultimax. went to buy arena but the wrong disc was in it so i guess i got a deal. its a weird game and feels weird coming from street fighter where ranges and normals feel way different. its pretty clear its all about combos as well as there are so many options to continue them and supers do not do a lot of damage. played kanji and practiced grabs and he does so much damage it was weird. probably would be less effective against real people but it was one of the first times i had fun with a grappler.
also been playing SUPERHOT which is a fun postmodern fps. i like it and its weird metatext layer, although it was less effective on the ps4 where i played it
SALT FIGHTER V
i made the unfortunate decision to get a PC version of street fighter v and have continued my streak of frustration and anger. i need to find a way back to playing the way i did before, caring less about winning and the pressure of staying in rank.
its pretty obvious that i’m slowly working up to building the technical skills to win, i just don’t have the mental fortitude for it yet. thinking about how i used to get excited for a close loss and want to keep playing a person when now i get upset and leave even after a close win.
i also played some insurgency but that’s a pc shooter which of course means the community is shit and loves slurs. maybe its a good game but it doesnt matter cause its community sucks
FIGHTN’ STREETS
played tons of street fighter v. been having some bad runs lately and feeling real bad, slipping into bad habits. finally made it out of rookie rank tho, which is more than i can say for any other fighting game.
more than anything the ability to keep composure and know when to walk away is probably going to determine how much i learn about that game. i’m also feeling like i might need a backup character soon, just to break me out of habits and understand new ways to play.
i also played Insurgency, which seems like it could be fun under the right circumstances, but is also a multiplayer shooter which means that will never happen
PUYO PUYO TETMIX
it’s been a while since i updated. been playing puyo puyo tetris nonstop and at this point i probably have more time in it than Yakuza 0. since i last updated i also beat nier automata, which has an incredible payoff and im glad i followed through.
ive also beat wondergirl the dragons trap, a remake of the master system wonder boy game, and it was a fantastic nonlinear rpg platformer that i love dearly. there’s some weird esoteric stuff near the end you’re required to do to get to the final area, but aside from that it feels way more fresh than you’d think a game from that era would.
i’ve been in a huge fighting game mood thanks to puyo puyo, tho at the moment i don’t feel i’ve been getting any better at any of them and feel sort of discouraged. i started street fighter v, played hours of it and have a probably 1/5 win ratio or lower. it has some cool ideas in it but it does a terrible job of teaching you and it is really aggravating.
tried out guilty gear xrd rev 2. seems cool, but also seems familiar from playing x2. yet to get into the new characters it seems like a lot to deal with and maybe kind of overwhelming.
samurai warriors spirit of sanada seems like a really dope rpg made out of the musou formula, tho how much it endears itself to me will depend a lot on the structure of it.
rivals of aether is cool and the characters have interesting situational and tactical abilities that seem full of possibility. again, doesnt do a great job of teaching you individual character stuff.
DESYNC
desync is the fastest ive gone from being excited about a game to absolutely abhorring it in a long time. no wonder they didnt give out review codes until release. that games is the absolute worst example of excusing shit design with “thats how it was made back in the day!”
