   “Oh, come on!” He, as usual, was far too optimistic for his own good. “Why wouldn’t you be called?”  He had utter, complete faith in the fates, believing that people were destined for a half of them, someone to complete them.

   Lana stood before him, looking divine and pristine in her black dress – truly a princess in every sense of the way. Meanwhile, Laiken strove for the classic - black long sleeves, slacks, a belt, and a tie  with the giddiest of smiles and posture. It was clear that the distinction between the two identified who was more regal than the other. 

   At the mention of their father, the half blood’s disposition faltered. “Of course he would.” There was a tinge of bitterness laced in his tone; Laiken was the bastard son of the king, which meant that he had his own set of impossible standards to live up to. 

   Composing himself, he tried to refocus, unwilling to allow his own daddy issues to get in the way of tonight’s festivities. “I bet you he’d love it even more if you’re the one bouncing up and down for a soulmate.”

     Lana did not begrudge her little brother his optimistic disposition on the matter; after all, she was an optimist at heart, too. And there was definitely a part of her that wanted to be as excited about the whole thing as he was. But after everything she’d been through, after the three human lifetimes she’d lived on this Earth (which wasn’t a lot but supernatural standards, but then again, she had always lived more like a mortal than an immortal creature), she simply couldn’t find it in herself to have the same hopes and dreams.

     She had tried to find peace in her existence, to accept her circumstances and learn how to live with them, but deep down, the syren princess never could quite bring herself to settle for anything less than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. She hadn’t lived through the American Revolution for nothing.

     “Father’s perfectly aware of where I stand on the matter,” she replied, avoiding the question of why her name might or might not be called and jumping straight to the next point, turning to Laiken and offering him a faint smile. It wasn’t that Lana didn’t want to talk about it, per se. It was more that she had no idea how to verbalise that, contrary to the general atmosphere, she was rather hoping her name wouldn’t be called. “He sends his best, by the way. I told him to call you, but...”

The night was growing, the moon full and people were restless. A static that filled the air and crackled, touching the bare skin of her arms. Even without knowing the proper significance of the night, anyone could tell that something was happening. Something remarkable and life changing. Brie walked through the waning crowd, less children were present now than there had been, carried away by parents who didn’t want to put up with hyperactive toddlers. Now there were more couples, small groups of teenagers, people out on dates.

Of course there were her kind, all around. She hadn’t noticed the young Syren sitting on the rock until she spoke. Cambrie looked down at the cupcake and shook her head. “Unfortunately I don’t like cupcakes that have holes in them, but that’s for the offer ?” her voice raised slightly at the end along with her left eyebrow. She had taken a step to walk ahead when she looked closer at the girl.

“What’s wrong with you, Princess ?” Brie took a step forward and sat herself down on a slightly lower rock, sweeping her dress to the side so she could sit down. “You don’t look as chipper as usual, especially for one who might be finding their soulmate tonight, I expected you of all people to be all smiles and giggles. Not excited ?”

     Lana hadn’t been looking to start a conversation, but she wasn’t exactly opposed to it either; it was as if her growing inner conflict had thrown her whole sense of self off-kilter. Truth be told, she wasn’t quite sure what she wanted anymore. All she knew was that it probably wasn’t this. “Operative word being might,” the brunette replied with a soft, polite smile, the very picture of the title she wasn’t quite ready to admit to herself that she hated. Her tone wasn’t excited, but it was the best she could do. “Nothing is set in stone yet.”

     It was a vague, obfuscating answer, one that she was sure a younger, more passionately idealistic version of herself would never believe had come out of her mouth. Back in the day, she never had known how to keep her opinions to herself; radically open-hearted and reckless in her belief that people were good and kind and deserved to be treated with fairness regardless of their sins. Of course, she was still open-hearted, and she liked to believe that she was good and kind and fair, but Lana was nowhere near as reckless, and she wasn’t quite sure when exactly that had changed.

     “Are you excited?” she queried in response, leaning forward ever so slightly to facilitate conversation. Her smile was now considerably wider.

The tension that had risen at the thought of someone unknown, a possible threat even if it was Harvest vanished as soon as he heard Lana’s voice. Calm filled him, the rising aggression banked in a moment.  “Lana, hey.” He smiled, and it was easy. Genuine. Not a face most people ever got to see. Not for truly anyhow. “No I just. I’m a bit off I think.” Thanks to the fangers lurking by the fire. “Stick around. I just needed some space from…all those people. I’ll be happy when Harvest is over and I can go back to my cabin. One way or another.”

     Lana loved to see people smile. She loved it even more when she was even a small part of the reason they did, the corners of her own lips immediately pulling up into a bright, warm smile in response to his---effortless and automatic. With the soft, semi-sheer fabric of her skirt in her hand, she gracefully navigated over rocks and roots until she was standing next to him.

     “I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s not overly thrilled about the whole thing,” she confessed, letting go of her dress and tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I know I should be excited about it, but... I don’t know. I kind of just want to go home and take a nap.”

     The brunette was not a liar, by any definition of the word, but it was rare that she was this candid about her feelings. Her opinions, yes. But not her emotions. “Can I ask you something?” she said suddenly, glancing over at Jake with an open, earnest look in her eyes. “Do you believe in any of this?”

Everything around her seemed to be so close and yet so distant. The chatter of those attending the gala, the murmur of distinct conversations, the music that played in the background and was almost unnoticeable (though if it were to stop, everyone would feeling this collective feeling of a strange quiet room) —- everything was standing at the end of a long tunnel. It was as if Raven had to concentrate to hear the sounds, even though she stood surrounded by them. Even the familiar voice calling her name echoed in a way that seemed unreal. 

Raven’s muscles and mind grew weaker once she felt her friend’s touch; perhaps it was her body telling her that it was okay to falter because she had some sort of support, making it okay to finally give up. It felt like all her strength had been taken from her in a matter of seconds and it wasn’t coming back. A soreness spread throughout. 

Raven nodded her head, “I’m fine, I just,” the brunette hated to make other people worry, so downplaying whatever was happening at a specific moment was always the card she played, “I just need a second, that’s all.” A lie, as big as one could be. “I’ll be okay.”

     Lana was gentle by nature, forcefully in absolutely nothing except in her beliefs; and even then, it was with a quiet determination that she rarely tried to force her ideals onto other people, so much as she stubbornly held on to them when other people tried to take them from her. She wasn’t an argumentative person. She didn’t enjoy being contrary, but years in medical school and a lifetime of service had taught her that when it came to their health and well-being, people lied.

    “You don’t seem okay,” the brunette stated plainly, moving to support more of Raven’s weight against herself while using gentle, non-verbal cues to encourage the other to walk with her. “We should get you further away from the crowd.”

     She wanted to help, but Lana wasn’t entirely sure what was happening; her brain quickly running through the list of potential explanations, everything from a panic attack to low blood sugar to having been drugged in some way or another. “Does this happened often?” she asked, hoping some additional information could help make things clearer.

   Finding his sister amongst the crowd took very little time. Laiken jokingly called it the ‘twin connection’ (the two were nowhere near twins in terms of age), but he always had the strongest sense when it came to locating her. True enough, his intuition had yet to fail him. 

   “Lana!” Waving towards her, the half blood nearly skipped all the way to meet her. “Is tonight not the most wonderful of nights?” For a supposedly somber celebration of fates and soulmates, Laiken appeared to be quite giddy, even in his all black outfit.

   “Isn’t this exciting? Finally, we get to meet our soulmates.”

     “Maybe,” Lana corrected with a soft, almost patient smile, not wanting to appear sombre about the whole thing but unable to muster the same enthusiasm for it as her brother. She had been known to smile even when she was sad, but there was a large difference between hiding emotions that she did have, and faking emotions that she didn’t. She excelled at one far more than the other. “If our names are called.”

     Turning to Laiken, there was something distinctly regal about the way the brunette subtly adjusted and brushed down her dress; subdued, polite and carefully put together. It was in times like these, she found herself thinking, that it became obvious that despite their many similarities, the pair had been raised very differently. “I’m glad you’re excited about it,” she continued warmly, her smile widening. “Dad’s going to love that.”

Out away from the fires, and the others, Jake could almost breathe again.  Almost.

If there had been another choice he would have stayed at home. Harvest or no, being around this many people made his skin crawl. Too many vampires, too close and he wasn’t a fan. A stick broke nearby and he looked, teeth bared before he realized what he’d done.

     Lana enjoyed other people’s company. She relished in seeing other people smile, and if she was even a small part of bringing that joyful expression to their face, she considered it a job well done. She wasn’t a loner by nature, but over the years she had learned how to be alone; and as a result, she had grown comfortable with solitude. Grown to choose it, to prefer being by herself over kidding herself with a life that, on a very fundamental level, she could never be truly part of.

     “It’s just me,” the brunette spoke softly in way of greeting, delicately lifting the skirt of her black dress in order to move easier across the uneven terrain. “But I can leave, if you’d rather be by yourself.”

LOCATION: Winter Fete

     Fate. Truth be told, Lana didn’t believe in fate. Or rather, she didn’t want to believe in fate; she didn’t want to live in a world where things were meant to be, and she certainly didn’t want to be a part of some grand, predestined plan designed by supernatural powers beyond her control. It was a thought that gave many people comfort, the idea that things happened for a reason, and perhaps once upon a time, it had given her comfort, too. But nowadays, it simply felt like yet another aspect of her own life that was out of her hands.

     All the youngest of the syren princesses had ever wanted was the right to choose her own destiny. To have just the tiniest, littlest measure of control over her own life, unbound to the customs of her kind and unburdened by the duty that came with being a part of her family. And yet with that thought came a deep-seated, crushing sense of guilt, because she loved her parents dearly, and she had never once wanted to hurt them or disappoint them. Lana was incredibly grateful for the life she had been given. She wanted to be happy with it. She wanted it to be enough for her, but it wasn’t; and while the years had taught her how to dream smaller and settle for less, she had yet to learn how to stop yearning for more.

     It was this inherent contradiction, of wanting to be excited about the Harvest and yet failing to even feel present in it (or to feel anything at all about it), that occupied the brunette’s mind as she sat perched on a small rock, picking at a cupcake with the crowd milling around her. Seriously, what was wrong with her? The most sacred and significant night of their kind was upon them and all she wanted to do was go home and take a nap. “Hey,” she greeted a passerby, offering them a small smile along with the baked good. “Do you want this?”

TIME: Nighttime, LOCATION: Black Hills, Deadwood. Winter Fete.  STATUS: Event-related. Open to anyone!

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. With her opened, the human looked around. Everything around Raven was overwhelming. Her chest felt tight, her fingers itched, thirst was threatening to overwhelm her and something around her didn’t feel quite… right. Raven couldn’t remember the last time she had felt like this —- or if she had ever felt so much at all. At least she felt better. 

It didn’t help that her family was present, as well. It only made things worse. 

Taking a champagne flute, Raven had to wonder who —- or rather, what — was around her as she took a long sip of the bubbly beverage. As a child, she was told everything but not enough to understand what’s going on around her. The moment her family realized she wasn’t a wytch, any and every less came to a stop. Raven was left to fend for herself in a world she was only aware of half of the things. Maybe the stories weren’t true at all.

The moment she bumped into someone, it was as if every bit of energy she had was sucked out of her for a few seconds and the human had to lean into a wall. “Fuck.” Raven breathed out, confused, scared. She can imagine just how much attention she would’ve gotten if she fell to the floor. 

She only wished no one had seen it. Hopefully, the steps she heard near her were of some unsuspecting soul, one that wouldn’t say anything.

     “Raven,” Lana exclaimed worriedly, automatically reaching out to help steady her friend or otherwise provide some form of physical comfort. It was a good thing that she had already been on her way to greet the other, a little excited but mostly apprehensive about having members of her human social circle around for the festivities, if not for the ceremony itself.

     She was always herself, always warm, always unflaggingly kind, but with her human friends, it was still different. With them, she could be whoever she wanted to be. She could be a normal girl, with a normal job, who had normal interests and did normal things. It was a difference in attitude and mindset that was so profound that her two worlds colliding was as uncomfortable to the syren princess as it was inevitable. However, any potential concerns or trepidation she had about the whole affair would have to wait. There were now more pressing issues at hand.

     “Hey,” the brunette continued gently, tilting her head in order to get a better look at the other girl’s face. “Are you okay?”

church had always felt home. the harvest had left him confused and questioning the very essences of the gods. what it a sick trick? to be matched with a human he would soon have to hurt. all around him thought the creature as a monster although at many times he felt his chest ache at the idea of the unfairness in many lives. 

hearing a footstep behind him ; it was the worst of times for someone to stumble upon him. he wasn’t in his sharp mindset and his tongue wasn’t sharpened enough. he had truly found himself in wonders for the first time in thousands of years. his pale hand rests in one pocket as his other holds his chin.

gently turning around with a glare only to form into something softened he will allow that hand to fall into his other pocket. he can’t find it within himself to be unkind to the other. rolling his eyes at the sight of the other and resting his eyes at the decaying roof of the church. “ you know… why are things so beautiful when we leave them to wither and age?” 

     Lana was not an unhappy person. Yes, she often found herself longing for things that she knew were a practical improbability, but she had learned how to live with it---nearly three hundred years of consistently wanting what she couldn’t have had finally managed to teach her that some things were simply not in the cards for her. That giving things up was not the end of the world. Choice was a human construct, after all, and if her handful of attempts at rebellion had shown her anything, it was that as a construct, it was not meant for her.

     No, Lana was not an unhappy person, but she often found herself feeling like the walls were closing in on her---and at no time more than in the aftermath of the Harvest.

     She had gone in search for some much needed time to herself, but as it turned out, finding solitude was easier said than done. In the midst of fates being interwoven and destinies being fulfilled, whatever the hell that even meant, it seemed she was not the only one with something weighing on her mind. “Because we romanticise the forgotten,” the brunette replied plainly, folding her arms over her chest as she took up a spot a fair amount of steps away from her company. “If only the same could be said about people.”

     Working at Inferno was a compromise that Lana had to make with herself every day. Walking into the building, she had to reconcile the fact that for all intents and purposes, she was a part of an establishment that existed to facilitate selfish gain. Casting a quick, surreptitious gaze toward the patrons gathered on the first floor, she knew that she was within earshot of various nefarious plans and business transactions taking place; goods and services being exchanged by people who basically trafficked in human misery. And making her rounds on the second floor, the syren princess understood profoundly that the people she was helping, the people she was healing, might take the strength she gave them and go on to cause other people harm.

     But she did it anyway, because the alternative was to walk right by knowing there were people inside who might desperately need medical attention; and leaving people in need to their own devices was something that she simply could not do. It was not her job to be judge, jury, or executioner. No, Lana’s job was to first do no harm.

     “Do you know what I’d like to do to you?”

     Today had been particularly challenging, with the patients under her care being more prickly and demanding than usual, to put it mildly. Having people swear or scream at her when she tried to help them was something that the brunette could easily live with. Being catcalled or harassed or even threatened with violence was something that she in her 280 years of living had simply gotten used to. It didn’t make it easy, and being used to it didn’t make her any less uncomfortable, but if it was the price she had to pay for being who she was, then she was willing to put up with it. She could ignore it. Or at least, she could try.

     That was, until she was being physically grabbed to the point that it almost made her visibly wince, certain that at the very least, the grip on her wrist would leave a nasty bruise.

     “Hey, I’m talking to you.”

     “Sir,” Lana said politely, doing her best to tamp down on her accelerating heartbeat as she tried and failed to pull away. “Sir, please, I’m---I’m just trying to do my job.”

IT TAKES COURAGE TO BE KIND IN A WORLD THAT’S CRUEL.  ──  She is warm, compassionate and kind-hearted, someone who gives herself to the world and everyone in it without expecting anything in return. She is soft, but it is a mistake to think that her softness makes her foolish or weak; on the contrary, it is a testament to her enormous strength of character. She is endlessly curious, and a lot more clever than she lets on, and fiercely stubborn in her beliefs. In another life, she would have made a great investigative reporter.

SHE WENT THROUGH HELL BUT CAME OUT AN ANGEL. YOU DIDN’T BREAK HER, HONEY; YOU DON’T OWN THAT KIND OF POWER.  ──  Don't be fooled by her willingness to put her faith in others; she has been hurt before, many, many times over. She has felt devastatingly lonely. She has felt let down. She wears her heart on her sleeve, unapologetic about her compassion yet painfully introverted when it comes to her sorrow, or her grief. She loves freely, except when it comes to herself. She can neither see her own beauty, physical or otherwise, nor understand how special it makes her.

LIFE IS NOT KIND. BUT I AM, AND THAT MAKES LIFE SO MUCH MORE COMPLICATED.  ──  Being a pacifist, she is incredibly conflicted about her nature. She was given the power to cause fear and horror and harm in others and yet all she has ever wanted to do is heal. She does not hate what she is, nor does she wish to be separated from her family or her kind; yet in many ways, she is afraid of who she was meant to be. Often, she finds herself wishing that she had the freedom to choose differently, only to be struck by guilt over the thought even crossing her mind at all.

     It was technically Lana’s day off, but true to form and to absolutely nobody’s surprise, she had decided to drop by the school anyway---just in case one of her regulars needed her. As a school nurse, she had come to classify her students into three groups: the ones who she had almost never seen, the ones who came in every now and then with a migraine or a sprain, and the ones who she saw so often that she could only think to refer to them as frequent fliers. It was the latter that sometimes, occasionally, every once in a while, prompted her to come in even when she wasn’t scheduled to work.

     As it turned out, she had been needed, resulting in a warm feeling of contentment at time well spent radiating through her being as the brunette walked down the main street toward her car; halted only by the appearance of an unknown figure laying horizontal across the pavement, visibly out of place for a town as tiny as Dell Rapids at three o’clock in the afternoon. It was a sight so bizarre that even her instinct to help took a couple of seconds to kick in.

     “Sir?” Lana asked softly, crouching down next to him and gently shaking the man with the most delicate of touches. “Hello, sir. Are you okay?”

    For someone who was born into the vast swaths of vivid blue and endless sea, Lana had become inordinately fond of land; of the flora, the fauna, the wildlife, the sheer quality of the oxygen. She loved being around nature almost as much as she loved being around human civilisation, finding tremendous joy and excitement in expanding her knowledge of the local terrain that went beyond the trails; an intuitive understanding acquired over years of exploring the untamed wilderness surrounding Lake Vernon.

     Wasn’t it at least a little funny how, for someone who prided herself on her ability to make connections, the young syren princess still spent so much of her time on her own?

     Today, she had ventured a little farther off her usual path, running her hand down the bark of a particularly interesting looking old tree when she picked up the soft, crinkling sounds of another being moving somewhere in her vicinity. Although somewhat surprised to find herself with company, she was quick to round the thick trunk with a smile already in place, ready to face them. “Hello,” Lana greeted warmly, brown eyes bright with warmth. “You’re not at your usual spot today, Brie.”

   In response to his utterance, Laiken heard his sister’s voice from the bedroom. It was the one place he dared not go to, for privacy and obvious reasons. Hearing then, the man decided to linger by her living room, waiting for her to reappear.

   As soon as he caught sight of Lana, a radiant smile danced on his features, followed by an eager, comforting hug between them. There was nothing like family to turn his spirits around, to turn an exhausting work day upside-down. Life was far too short to deprive himself of showing just how much he cared and loved for people, more so his own blood.

   Intertwined in their embrace, he retorted. “I know.” Pulling back with a chuckle, the pair headed off to the kitchen, his footsteps heavy compared to hers. Pausing by the kitchen doorway, Laiken leaned against the wall, arms folded as his expression already hinted that of mischief. “You just never know, you could have a surprise guest at one of our dinners.” A teasing chuckle left his lips, with all intents to make fun of her. “I mean, it’s bound to happen.”

     Stirring one of the pots on the stove, the brunette didn’t need to look up to know that her brother was probably standing by the doorway, leaning against the wall. To say that Lana and Laiken were close would be a vast understatement. Although they had gotten off to a rocky, admittedly awkward start, the pair had grown increasingly fond of each other over the years to the point where it was getting difficult to imagine that they had ever been without each other. More often than not, they acted more like twins than half brother and sister.

     “Oh my god, what are you talking about?” she asked with an incredulous laughter, grinding pepper over her pan of marinara sauce. It wasn’t that Lana had never had visitors, but for the most part, nobody but Laiken and the occasional hiker (or local drunkard) who she found lost in the woods came to her home. “That’s definitely not bound to happen. Especially not with that article out there.”

     She didn’t need to clarify. Everyone in the supernatural community knew what someone meant when they referred to the article. It had crossed the syren’s mind more than once or twice that the widespread revelation of their kind could be a blessing in disguise, but that hope had been somewhat dampened by the reactions of her human friends; not all outright hostile to the idea, but many simply disbelieving. “’S probably wise for me to keep a low profile for a while. Don’t want to be giving anybody any ideas, after all.”

While she is still young for her species, Lana has a rich history that she rarely shares with others—not because she’s particularly secretive as a person, but because her humility prevents her from talking about herself in excess unless prompted to. She was a suffragette, served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWI and WWII, supported the Civil Rights Movement and took part in the Flower Power revolution, among countless other achievements.

Unlike older members of her species, who in some cases lived many centuries in the depths of the deep blue, away from human beings, Lana has always been deeply connected to their society. Human history and her history are indistinguishable.

She has actually completed medical school. Several times. She has simply never gone on to take up a residency because, you know, she can’t exactly do nightshifts.

Her family own a large shipping company that originated in South America but now operates worldwide. They’ve made a habit of moving around, not only from city to city, but from country to country; even from continent to continent. Lana’s decision to return and remain in Dell Rapids was met with some skepticism, but her parents still adore her and drop by often enough to see her, as well as her brother.

She has taken up work as a school nurse, with a part time job in the Inferno ‘hospital wing’ offering care to its unsavoury patrons, for lack of a better word. Lana does not approve of the establishment, and she certainly does not care about the money; she simply believes that everyone, including criminals, deserve decent medical care.

Lana enjoys nature, and spends a lot of time wandering around the woodland near the lake in her spare time, occasionally stumbling across the odd hiker in need. She may or may not have also encountered a local or two sleeping off their hangover (or worse) in a bush. She makes a point to help them, too.
