“It isn’t that I won’t tell you about him, I just…” Wanda paused for a moment, searching for the right words. “It is just very difficult for me to talk about him to anyone… right now… because it hurts. That’s all. It has nothing to do with you.” She hoped the girl would understand, for she never wanted it to seem like she was excluding her for personal reasons.
It was when Avalon brought up the subject of attempting to bring Pietro back from the dead that Wanda was quick to snuff out that flicker of hope. There were far too many things that could go wrong with this, and most importantly, Wanda was supposed to be watching over Avalon, guiding her… not letting her perform potentially dangerous feats of magic for her own selfish benefit. “Avalon… you don’t owe me anything for helping you. Certainly not something like that…”
The hope was too much for Wanda to ignore, though, no matter how staggering the potential pitfalls were. “There’s a lot of reasons why this isn’t a good idea,” she began, trying to sound as calm and measured as she could despite that her heart had started beating wildly out of control. “First of all… I don’t want you getting hurt. I’m responsible for your safety while you’re at the compound, and I don’t know what bringing people back from the dead entails for you, but… my brother would never want to come back and someone else’s expense. Also… you said this rabbit you brought back was a little clumsy… What does that mean exactly? My brother was always a very energetic, very fit, very active person. Bringing him back crippled or unable to move around as he wished or anything like that would be a fate worse than death for him. No matter how much I want him back, I could never disregard what he would want.”
Those were all very valid reasons why this topic should remain out of the question, and yet Wanda found herself unable to simply utter the word “no.” She also had to consider the effect that outright refusing Avalon would have on the vulnerable and impressionable girl. She already thought her powers were a nuisance and that she was unwanted, or at least she did before she came to train with Wanda. If she never let the girl discover the limitations and potential of her abilities, then how was she ever supposed to master them? “If… If you think you can control it well enough… and you want to try…” she began to say, wondering if she was making the right decision here.
Wanda felt that this was really wrong. Everything about it. She shouldn’t disturb the dead, especially her own brother. She also shouldn’t put this kind of burden and expectation on her young student either. And would this in some way offend the gods, to attempt to defy the laws of death? Wanda fidgeted with her hands as she watched Avalon begin her attempt, knowing she should change her mind and call it off right now but not having the words to do it with. The hope of maybe having Pietro back again was too much of a lure, and Wanda simply couldn’t ignore it.
Elsewhere, across from where they all were at right now, stood a person who had just dropped everything in his hands. This was his first night here as a janitor, and he hadn't expected anything to happen yet. Like most, he had a secret hope of it, yes. However, he had also been telling himself to be realistic. That it takes time for exciting things to happen, and if he was patient enough he might have the chance to see something cool.
Well, there went having to wait to see something...
The bright purple lights coming from the area behind the compound had drawn him to go and see what was going on. What he saw, wasn't at all what he'd been thinking he'd see. Once the light died down and faded out, he dropped his hand from his eyes and blinked a few times. From what he could see now, there were three people out in the back area, and an open...hole in the ground. They were in what he had been told was a restricted, private place - so what was going on, he had no idea. All the man knew, was that from where he was standing, it looked to him like whoever they were...the people needed help.
With the state that Avalon was in, she couldn't hear what was going on - much less see it. She had no idea that it had worked; the fact that anyone else but Wanda was there was entirely lost on her. She was so limp in Wanda's arms that when the janitor, Devin, finally made his way down to where they were at, he didn't think that she was even alive anymore. Had he not seen her breathing, he would have thought that this was some form of an impromptu burial of some sort for her.
Out of breath, Devin hunched over and put his hands on his knees. Breathing heavily, he looked up at them and held up his finger to signify asking for a moment. Standing up finally, he exhaled and offered an uncertain kind of smile; he meant well, though.
"Uh..Hi, I'm uh, I'm not sure why y'all are out here or what's going on, but it looks like you need some help, and..possibly some medical attention?" Devin offered, a little confused but deciding to go with how his grandma had raised him, rather than to ask a ton more questions of these poor people: to help those who needed it, and sort it out later on if need be.
"Here, how about I lift her, and you can help him walk up there?" Devin offered this to Wanda, not rushing things and just waiting for her to move when she was ready. in appearance, Devin was a little more on the pudgy side, and losing more of his hair than he liked for his age. He was no superhero, he was not even anyone important in his own eyes. He was, however; a kind soul. Something that he hoped came across here...since some people just thought he was some creepy middle-aged guy who should stick to mopping floors.
How he knew Pietro had trouble standing, well...he'd seen how wobbly the poor thing was when he was trying to stand, and how badly it went for him, before even having reached where they were at.
