Acrylic Nails
We have seen celebs like J.Lo, Kylie Jenner and Rihanna amongst others rocking some cool nail extensions these days - but are they for all of us? Perhaps it's a good idea to start with What are they? and How do they work? Polymethyl methacrylate acrylics are a mixture of a polymer powder and liquid monomer - the mixture starts to harden 20-30 seconds after the application and continues to cure to a final hardness approx. 15 min after initial application. They can be removed by using acetone, it takes 20 to 30 minutes to remove the product. Nail enhancements are an extension of your natural nails. There are two main approaches to creating acrylic extensions - tips and forms. Tips are 'nail' shaped thin plastic plates, they are glued on to the free edge of your natural nail and acrylic is applied all over, filled and buffed. Forms are fitted under the nail rather than on top, and the nails are sculpted out of acrylic. The form is removed once the nail has set, and they are filled and buffed to a shine. Personally I love them, they just make my hands feel fancier and elegant, but I know they can be unpractical (that is of course ,cos I love mine mega long). You might want to start with a shorter version. Some pros on getting acrylics are: 1.-Durability : Acrylic nails are really sturdy, so they are great for nail bitters or people that type lots. 2.-Immediate length and shape to your nail. Here are some cons: 1.-Strong odour when applied. 2.-You need to get them removed professionally (trust me on this one, you don't wanna rip them off, you could rip of your own nail from the nail plate. ouch!). This way you will end up with minimal damage to your natural nail. 3.- Some damage will occur on your natural nails, but this should be minimal though (depending on the skills of your nail tech). There is no need for harsh filling during preparation. There are also other ways of creating nail extensions such as hard gels or stick on's(for a less permanent option). If you are not looking for length and all you want is for them to look cared for, you could also try a gel polish such as Gelish or Shellac; it will give you up to 3 weeks of amazing colour without chipping and really nice shine. There is something out there for everyone and hey even having bare nails is ok! As for me I'll keep rocking my claws, but I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with them . Ana M.
