『The Hunchback of Notre Dame』(1939)
Notre-Dame de Paris ✨
It turns out interesting: in one of my favorite books ("The Brothers Karamazov") they mention my second favorite book... Yes, now "Notre-Dame de Paris" is my second favorite book. I’ll definitely re-read it too, because everything there is wonderful: the plot, the characters, the humor, the glass, the chemistry between the characters and... Claude’s monologues 💔

How did you choose your url?
It's a fandom url.
It's a play on my name or my actual name.
It's not a fandom url, but it's related to something I love.
It's just random letters or words.
It's a phrase or an anagram.
I didn't pick it. Someone else did.

None of these options fit. I'll tell you in the tags.
Frollo throughout the ages.
My favourites: Cedric Hardwicke, Daniel Lavoie, and Latvian Frollo

Excerpt from the original script of the 1939 version of the scene where Frollo confronts Esmeralda.
Note the alternate dialogue.
Since this is such a eternally popular topic in the fandom, I think maybe I should post about my (scattered) opinions on it.
- Frollo is not morally excusable.
- But that doesn’t mean he’s a pedo. People who say this are 1) projecting a modern concept backwards (to both Hugo’s time and the medieval ages) and 2) over simplifying his attraction to just Esmeralda’s age.
- Some people objected that it makes sense for the reader to also reject Frollo inside the story. I agree.
In other words, when the reader recognises that’s he is detached from the book and is not Esmeralda, it makes sense to sympathise with Claude. That’s how the whole genre of tragedy works. When the reader self-projects and is Esmeralda, though, this starts to make no sense. Because it is unrealistic to expect Esmeralda herself to take up Claude’s offer.
- However please still be lenient to Fresme fans. I think a lot of Fresme fans are just making up a version of Esmeralda that basically manifests the the reader’s wishes. Sure it’s just some selfish fantasy, but aren’t all fan content the same? (I used to be that guy who likes Fresme and tries to give them a happy ending haha)
- Some Frollo apologists need to examine the complexity his character. I know we feel that the sweeping judgments of some official critics (in certain countries which espouse state atheism) are unjust, but it’s no less unjust to speed to the other extreme and paint him into the poor innocent lovesick boy that he’s not, although it’s tempting to spite the critics. It makes us look ridiculous.
I like light controversies so if you differ please feel free to reply/message me/however this works on tumblr
As always good analysis! Y'all should read this XD
