A little of Ada and Jake working together in an re9 dlc for fun and whimsy 🌟
(Aeon + Shake)
The evening air had a bite to it. Ada wrapped her coat closer to her body. She held up her gloved hand and thought the better of revealing the spread of decay she'd already seen there.
"How long did you say it would take for this guy to show up?" Jake asked from the window. They sat in the dark waiting for their target, a possible lead, to appear across the street.
"I didn't."
"We can't stay here all night." Not the first time that night, he shot her with an impatient look. In the glow from the street below, she made out the shadows of his face. He looked so much like his father, yet there was a softness in his eyes she'd never seen in Wesker.
"How did you meet Sherry?" Ada asked to distract herself from the ache in her limbs, and to keep Jake busy so he'd stop complaining. She already knew he'd worked with Sherry in China. A smile spread over his face. It pulled at the scar along his cheek. He kept his eyes fixed outside.
"She found me. Her shitty boss was a little too interested in me." He shook his head and leaned against the wall. "Can't say I blame him." Ada had picked up on his cockiness early. It didn't surprise her. Mercenaries had to appear confident and composed to get the good jobs.
"Don't worry, her shitty boss got what was coming," she said. He laughed through his nose.
"Where'd you meet Leon?" he asked. Ada couldn't tell if he was actually interested or attempting to pass the time. It didn't really matter.
"Raccoon City," she said. Jake whistled low.
"Been together a long time."
"In a way."
"What does that mean?"
"It's complicated." The room filled with their silence and the muffled sounds of traffic outside.
"What car did you say this guy would come in?"
"I didn't." Ada closed her eyes to try and rest. She would kill Leon for even suggesting she work with someone, especially little Wesker.
"How do you deal with it?" Jake's voice was soft. She almost hadn't heard him. She opened her eyes to find him looking back at her. There was that expression again, the one that reminded her how different he was from his father.
"With what?" she asked.
"Working on opposite sides," he said. There were moments on this job that made her label Jake Muller as ruthless. There were moments where he spoke to Sherry on comms in hushed voices that made her label him kind. The duality was striking. But hadn't she been the same? There were times when he spoke that she heard herself speaking to her from the past.
"You don't."
"You're married to him."
"He still works there, and I'm here with you."
"You make it work." Jake turned his attention back to the street.
"In a way."
"Is he the driver, or does someone else drive him?" It took Ada a moment to realize Jake spoke about the target.
"That man's never driven a day in his life."
"Sounds like you knew him well."
"You work with the same people long enough, you start collecting information," Ada said. Jake nodded as he surveyed the street.
"I guess we wouldn't be waiting here for him if that weren't the case," he said. The stillness stretched longer this time. She'd almost dozed off when a wave of nausea hit her and she forced herself to remain alert. The ache gnawed at her. She adjusted her coat again, glanced at her glove. Did it matter how bad it was? Looking at the spread changed nothing.
"You alright?" Jake asked.
"He likes the dark SUVs government officials use. It makes him feel important."
"He sounds like a asshole."
"He is an asshole."
"You hang out with a lot of assholes?" Jake asked with amusement playing along his features.
"I'm hanging out with you, aren't I?" Ada replied.
"Touche." His eyes narrowed. "I think I see him. No. False alarm." She wanted to tell him to relax but she understood his impatience. Sherry was most likely in a better way than her and Leon, but that didn't change she was showing the same signs. Ada's infection showed first. Purple bruises spread until they began to alarm her, Umbrella's curse reminding her she'd spent many hours a day in the lab in Arklay.
"Do you have superpowers?" Jake asked.
"Silence won't hurt you, Jake, I promise."
"Sherry has superpowers."
"No, I don't have superpowers."
"Does Leon?"
"Just his exceptionally bad jokes."
"Do you ever think about leaving the business?" Jake's voice dropped in that soft way it did again. She began to put together his tells of truth. She'd explain them to him after they finished working together.
"Do you?"
"Yeah."
"Me too."
"They won't let us, will they?" He gazed out the window. A passing police car lit him briefly in red and blue. The powerful people at the top liked full control. The two of them knew too much to be simply freed.
"No. They won't." Her hand spasmed, and she held it up to slowly pull the glove off. The decay was exactly as she'd seen it before. "It's not that different from what they do," she said into the dark.
"Leon and Sherry?"
"They work for assholes, as you call them, and don't have the option to leave without consequences." She slipped her glove back on. Jake stared into the room.
"Guess everyone's gotta make a living," he said.
"Or have enough power to control everyone else's living." Another long silence filled the room. Ada thought of the bitterness she'd left behind and the comforting future. She felt her ring tucked beneath her glove.
"You knew my father." It was a simple statement. Jake had kept it to himself since they'd met, but she knew he'd ask.
"I did," Ada answered. He nodded thoughtfully.
"Did Leon hold it over your head?" Not the question she expected.
"Sometimes."
"Guessed your whole character based on association too, huh?" Jake shook his head. "People come up with conclusions based on so little of people."
"He didn't. Suspicious of my actions, maybe, but not my character." Ada knew this infection was making her delirious to reveal so much to this man.
"I get that." The soft patter of rain began on the window. "Shit, I won't be able to see through this."
The longer they sat there, the stiffer she felt anyway. She attempted to stand, holding the wall for balance.
"Then we better go," she said. "If that building hasn't changed, I know a back door."
"Why didn't we try that first?" Jake moved from the window.
"It's riskier."
"Whoa there." Jake lurched forward to catch Ada when her legs buckled. "You're not looking so hot."
"Speak for yourself."
"Don't start lying to me now." He helped her gather her balance before he released her.
"Let's get out of here before we actually miss our chance."
"You up for this?" Jake asked. The question reminded her of the doomed city, of the warmth given to her in the depths of the facility, the same warmth she continued to receive.
"I think I can fit it into my schedule," Ada replied.
The blood loss was really starting to hit when the sound of footsteps caught his attention. He grabbed his gun and waited.
Chris and Claire came into view, and he got to watch in real time as they made some assumptions about his situation. Chris pulled his gun immediately, and Claire followed suit right after.
Leon understood the situation didn't exactly look good. Ada had blood dripping down her face from where she was quite clearly biting into his arm. Leon knew he also must be pretty pale from the blood loss. All and all nearly a home run on the PTSD for the lot of them.
He raised his gun just the same, his arm only swaying slightly. “Put the fucking guns down you two I'm fine.”
But once Enid had turned around to face Wednesday with a bright smile, the music began again. This time, it was something Enid hadn’t heard before, at least not altogether.
There were little bits of the song that sounded familiar, cords she’d heard in passing, whenever Wednesday practiced on their balcony.
It was beautiful.
