listen. there are people on twitter shrieking that everyone who is not wearing an N95 mask in all indoor settings in september 2022 is a eugenicist exactly as bad as the Nazis and should be sent to a gulag. vocally mask mandate supportive experts are being turned on and hounded off social media because they get photographed in company one (1) time without one and there’s a full-on feeding frenzy. some of these people have coalesced into a straight up left-antivaxx movement, because if folks think the vaccine works then they might be less frightened than they were two years ago, and the goal is for everyone to be terrified into masking 24/7 forever, so now it’s a whole thing to denigrate and dismiss the vaccines and boosters, which can i just say is 110% leading to sickness and death among the elderly and vulnerable that doesn’t need to happen. but they don’t care! many are genuinely themselves convinced that community mask mandates work really really well (often bc they don’t distinguish between lab studies of masks themselves and actual population level epidemiological data, but also there’s a lot of shit studies and data manipulation going on, it’s a swamp out there), and/or they really believe vaccines don’t work worth shit, and/or they’ve been gaslit into thinking that if they personally catch it they face certain death because they have some trivial health condition that appeared on a list of risk factors back in spring 2020 (when the virus was novel and tropic for deep lung tissue and no one had any immunological defenses and there were case mortality rates of like 14 fucking percent coming out of lombardy) and they’ve gotten the idea that’s the same thing as being profoundly immunocompromised—as if having asthma or being overweight were the same as having a kidney transplant! i don’t even know, man. i feel terrible for these people, but also horrified at the thought that they might yell loud enough to drive policy, because at this point it is an unbelievable misdirection of investment down the pointless fucking drain that does nothing except make people miserable and foster an authoritarian xenophobic stranger danger society, the kind of culture i never in a billion years expected to see progressives pushing. in short, i’m sorry and astonished to have to say that yes, covidian lunatics are a thing now.
