why is passing bullshit?

When someone says ‘passing’, they mean ‘look like a cis person, no one wants to know that you’re actually trans’.

‘Passing’ enforces the idea that there’s only one way to look to be a ‘man’ or a ‘woman’.

It reinforces the gender binary, which is acidic to people who are not in the gender binary. How can a nonbinary person ‘pass’? What do they have to ‘pass as’?

It also creates a huge added weight for trans people who don’t ‘pass’ the correct way.  A trans boy is forced into hypermasculinity, and a trans girl called a drag queen because she has more muscles than ‘socially acceptable’. Dysphoria is forced onto people that wouldn’t feel the need to pass without society forcing them to.

Because of ‘passing’, there’s a taboo on girls (even cis girls) with facial hair. Girls have to look a certain way, and there’s only one way to do it. Boys (again, even cis boys) can’t wear makeup or dresses. It’s mostly adverse for trans people, but it affects everyone. 

But think about it like this, because this is how it’s received: 

‘Sorry, you don’t look like a boy, you can’t actually be a boy.’

‘Oh, umm your arms are a little hairy to be a woman, are you sure you’re just not a gay man?’

‘Passing’ comes with the connotation that ‘cis’ is the best way to do gender. You can’t be a gender if you aren’t doing it the cis way.

It makes cis seem like the superior. Passing is bullshit.

so there’s this terrible spotify ad (i don’t have premium because unemployed. boo) from biore, about their ridiculous nose strips, and i want to throw something across the room every damn time i hear it. FIRST OFF, those “blackheads” on your nose usually aren’t even blackheads, they’re sebaceous filaments. if your skin is properly washed and exfoliated, then they’re not dirt, they’re supposed to be there. they’re just going to come back and biore KNOWS THAT, so they have that awful ad telling you that they look “dirty” and disgusting (their words!!! idk about the word disgusting but i know they used dirty and the entire ad is very very self esteem-killing) so you’ll keep on buying the damn nose strips for a fake condition that isn’t going to go away. you can diminish their appearance using AHA exfoliants, but they will be back within 24-48 hours if you try to remove them.

in other words: fuck you and your predatory scam, biore. throw out ur biore strips guys.

Also, if you’re unnecessarily consuming animal products, you need to examine why it’s “okay” for you to do those things (which cause literally millions of painful gruesome deaths per year) but why someone killing one animal makes you so outraged.

The assembly line of cut throats and nails to the brain are infinitely kinder than forty minutes of pain for an animal that is not food. We use most of the feed animals. Their corpses won’t rot in the sun. Their cubs won’t be killed because new males took over the pride. Lions are endangered. I assure you cows, pigs and chickens are not. Stop trying to hijack issues that you know are not even close. It makes you look a fool.

Actually, it can take “food” animals a very long time to die. Many are still alive when they reach scalding tanks and have their skin peeled off. It can take a fish hours to suffocate after being violently ripped from the water, and that’s if decompression doesn’t kill them first. (Eyeballs popping out, internal organs being forced up through their mouths…all that stuff.) And what about the years of cruelty endured by dairy cows and laying hens before they are violently killed? What about the few months of agony endured by veal calves before they are violently killed?

Also I didn’t just say food, I said animal products. Like ANY product which involves animals. Animals who are forced to be experiments, animals whose skin is ripped off while they are still conscious so that people can make clothing and furniture from it. Animals who are forced to be transportation, or who are in the entertainment industry.

Of course the killing of Cecil the lion, and all the consequences for his family, are horrific. I never said it wasn’t. But it’s asinine for there to be such uproar over the death of one animal when nonvegans are paying for MILLIONS of animals per year to endure suffering that is just as bad if not worse, and for something that, like Cecil’s death, is also COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY.

NO animals are food. They are animals. They are individual people with rights. There is no way to unnecessarily kill or harm an animal that is remotely justifiable. The death of Cecil the lion was unnecessary, as are the deaths of the millions of animals who are victims of human greed. The only difference between the killing of Cecil the lion and the killing of cows, pigs, and chickens is that lions are exotic and you have an emotional attachment to them.

And you want to know what contributes to more species extinction than any other industry? Animal agriculture. Responsible for 70% of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than any other industry. Air pollution, water pollution. Humans will kill members of endangered species to protect their “livestock”. Fishing is hugely responsible for the destruction of marine ecosystems by depriving apex predators of adequate nutrition AND for every pound of targeted fish, many pounds more “bycatch” is caught which often consists of endangered species of cetaceans, sea turtles, and more.

These issues are all related, okay? Human entitlement is bad for ALL animals, and the entire planet, and getting angry over the death of one lion is not enough. People need to be angry at ALL of it. People need to wake up and go vegan.
