so somethings always bugged me and this post really brought it to bear. am i missing something critical about the orpheus thing? like he couldnt look but why didnt he just shout over his shoulder. was eurydice mute or he was deafened to her? I cant recall either of those things ever being mentioned. What was preventing them from just talking while they left?

here’s the thing about orpheus: he’s not being tested against temptation. he’s being tested in his faith. because it’s not that orpheus wasn’t allowed to see eurydice—it’s that he wasn’t allowed to know if she was even there.

here’s another thing about orpheus: he actually did it. he made it out of the underworld without turning around. but he was so excited at the possibility of getting eurydice back that he forgot she still had to follow him out. she had not yet crossed the threshold. one more second and he might’ve gotten her back.

I know it’s not a 1:1 but this is kinda like Europeans with racism. Americans get a lot of shit for being racist, and we are, but Europeans are advanced racist. Not to say there’s no colorism in Europe, but every once in a while I’ll chat with someone from Europe who’ll say something like “I’m not racist like you Americans! I just don’t think the French should be allowed to reproduce, Albanians can’t be trusted to do your taxes, and the Welsh should be killed and harvested for organs.” and it’s like “I’m not sure what that is if it’s not racism, but I can’t deny it’s different.”

i think its a lil sad how often people will like restrain themselves from exploring new identities and hobbies because they don't want it to be an "embarrassing phase" because honestly i think its way cooler to have a diverse and varied lifestyle that you can look back on and say "omg i used to love doing that!" and apply those skills and interests to something else.
