I love your art work so much :3 I was just wondering, how do you pick your colors? they are just so beautiful and unique and UGH i cant do colors and it pains me

its about time i try to explain this as the obviously unprofessional i am. 

i just pick colors depending on my mood, there are colors that look colder and warmer, so i take advantage of that 

do you feel the colors. you gotta feel them. 

then it’s time to pick the best colors for your piece, aka AVOID THESE IF YOU CAN. 

sometimes they work tho, but why pick those when you can pick these

they give you cuter colors and better color palettes.

remember to feel how warm or cold or neutral you want anything to look. 

that’s better looking than the MS Paint default palette. after some time you will be able to choose nice colors, give it a try. (you can also make a new layer with a solid color and set it to Overlay and it should help). 

then the shading comes in, you’ll eventually realize some colors look better with others. BUT PLEASE PLEASE AVOID SHADING WITH BLACK/GREYS OR MAKING LIGHTS WITH WHITE.

ew that looks so simple, why do that when yOU COULD BE SHADING WITH COLORS TOO??? 

yeah that looks more lively. 

i really like colors and that’s why i experiment with them a lot so to fully understand them you could either learn on your own by trying (like me) or you could take color classes, which is good too because they will teach you about other important stuff like this 

but basically its just

If you’re doing animation or something pertaining to bears walking, for the love of mud, watch some clips before you start. The forepaws move a bit differently from other animals. And regardless of how fat and squishy they may appear, they. Run. Fast. They are coordinated and strong. Like I said, watch some clips to get a better idea.

As requested, a tutorial on how I approach lips. This is just how I see them, but I hope it helps!

Little nugget of advice that really changed the way I approached painting. When I started blending like this it was a real turning point for my art quality.

Forgot to add that lighting conditions and other variables in a piece make the hardness you want to choose somewhat variable. Drawing things like skin is more of a hardness range than it is a hard rule. 

Eheh…get it? Hard rule? (aaaaaaaaaand i’m done).

Haa thanks, I can’t even put into words how unappealing the overuse of a soft brush is when rendering. There have even been otherwise expertly painted images that were (in my opinion) ruined by that overly soft ‘airbrush’-y look that soft edged brushes give off. 

I mean, I just really hate soft edged brush in most cases. It’s definitely the fact that you can’t read any real confidence in the brush strokes of a soft edged brush. It makes it really difficult to nail down any solid shapes or forms in your painting. Weak vagueness both in brush strokes and with shape and form is generally not a good thing when painting.

 If I can tell a soft edge brush was used (a lot) in an image, I probably won’t like how it’s been applied.
