The Past And Present Of Dragon Age 4

In December 2018, developer BioWare teased the next Dragon Age game, hinting at a mysterious future for the popular fantasy series—one that’s enticing, but seems very far away. Why, more than four years after Dragon Age: Inquisition, is Dragon Age 4 still so early in development? The answer is complicated, and reflective of BioWare’s turbulence over the past decade.

There is so much in this article about what DA:4 was going to be that makes me incredibly, incredibly sad it won’t come to fruition.

“A large chunk of Joplin would center on heists. The developers talked about building systemic narrative mechanics, allowing the player to perform actions like persuading or extorting guards without the writers having to hand-craft every scene”

It sounds so much like going back to the roots of what makes Origins so special. 

But now?

“This new version of the fourth Dragon Age is planned with a live service component, built for long-term gameplay and revenue.”

I know it’s been said before that this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be ‘live’ as in requiring an internet connection, and I will pray to any god that will listen to please not make that so. Not all of us are fortunate enough to live in places with internet capable of playing online games. If this is still being decided, then please, BioWare. make the decision that enables all of your fans to enjoy your games.

(With all this on top of the even more distressing recent article about working conditions in the studio, man… is it too much to hope that assurances that they will make things better for their employees are true?)
