Within the walls of Hellenistic Alexandria are several ancient villages tucked into the cliffside by the river. While the Ptolomies plot in their splendid palaces, the common people live simply in their mudbrick homes near the tanneries. The smell is overpowering, yet there is something alluring as the setting sun turns the walls into a deep rosy glow. Quick visit back to the perfumery. Real life tidbit: my first job was at a candle factory. I’d leave there smelling like a combination of baked goods, spices and flowers every day.
