Taking Down Some Abusive Viral Fish Videos

Ok, so I haven't been on here since 2017, but I've come across something that could use the help of fishblr. There's a YouTube channel called The Animals Around Us. This channel is the source of the video from the meme I screenshotted. They seem to be a breeder of some sort? They also run a slime channel.

They've been posting videos of fish being poured into buckets. These videos get millions of views. The problem is, the lack of attention paid to things like fish compatibility . In some videos, multiple male bettas are placed in one bucket, with many other fish and sometimes an axolotl. There's plenty more wrong there, but I'd say that's the most obvious reportable offense. It's widely known that male bettas will try to kill each other if put together.

What I'm asking is, please report these Youtube videos, using the male bettas as the reasoning. I don't wanna see "satisfying" fish videos like these become a trend. They're dangerous to the animals involved and are a source of misinformation. They further the misconception that you can just keep any random combination of cute fish in a tank together.

ATTENTION FISHBLR/BETTABLR

Petco is now advertising for betta soroties and will have a tank devoted to female bettas. This highly debated housing and treatment of female splendens is, in my opinion, unethical and abusive.

I ask of you guys to not lash out, and protest petco. Instead inform and teach people the proper treatment of bettas and explain that sororities are a very stressful environment and usually end with the death of many fish.

Please spread the word so we may educate those on proper care of bettas!

I’ve had my betta sorority for a year now and there is no aggression at all, there only ever was in the first week or two, and they had plenty of hides and plants and a large tank so they have plenty of personal space when they want it, and nobody got hurt, only chasing and 1 slightly nipped fin. It really depends on how you set it up, you need to follow all the rules and have LOTS of  live (not plastic) plants and smooth non-sharp hides at first, and put them all in at once. It’s like when you introduce two cats, bunnies, or guinea pigs to each other, you have to do it properly or they won’t get along. If you’re careful and actually do it properly, it does work. 

However I do dislike that ad because it makes it seem as simple as throwing two bettas in a regular tank, which it isn’t, so many people will think that just putting them together will work. The tank devoted to female bettas will probably also go badly because it most likely will just be a 10 gallon tank with some gravel and like one statue in there that they can cut their fins on by accident.

Fish keeping hack that I find extremely helpful: pill container for food rations. I hear so many horror stories about people going away and leaving someone to take care of their fish, only to come home to find them extremely bloated and overfed, or leftover food gunking up the tank. (And it happened to me as well.) So now I do this whenever I leave for more than a couple of days. One side is labeled for the large tank (my 29 gallon community) and the other is the small tank (my 10 gallon betta tank).

What are some fish keeping “hacks” you wish other aquarists knew? Some trick that makes the hobby less stressful?

The End

So, it was a difficult dessicion for me, but I’ve decided I’m gonna stop posting on this blog. There are a few reasons: how expensive creating well-aquascaped tanks is, not being able to get clear pictures of my fish, and all the hate lately on betta sororities (my favorite tank is my betta sorority tank and they’re all healthy and happy and never fight, but everybody seems to hate betta sororities now). 

But the main reason, honestly, is lack of interest. I just don’t feel as enthusiastic about fish as I used to. And of course, I’ll still care for them and keep them happy and healthy, I’m just not interested enough to post about it. In posting about my fish, I don’t have much ability for creativity, as the tanks stay pretty much the same with not much difference unless I spend a ton of money on them, so there aren’t many different pictures I could take of them. It just gets boring and you run out of ideas after a while unless you keep buying more stuff. There’s just only a pretty small amount of different patterns of bettas to see and types of pictures to take of them.

So, my plan is to give some final updates and pictures of each of my tanks on my blog tomorrow, and then stop posting. (Once again, the fish will all still be cared for just as well as before, in fact, their care will probably improve because I have less to worry about. Nothing else about the care is changing, I’m just stopping posting about them is all. I’m still gonna keep them and take good care of them.)

I will still be on tumblr however, on my personal blog where I mostly reblog funny things, pretty things, and pictures of cute animals: @deepestrebelhologram 

and my magicy and aesthetic blog:
