If you’re scrolling through tumblr trying to distract yourself from something you don’t want to think about or you’re looking for a sign that everything will be okay, this is it. So, breathe. Relax into this moment. You’re alive & that’s all that matters.
Okay, I just gotta address Schneider and Victor, and the way One Day At A Time handles addiction, because this is so goddamned important to me and no one else has made this post yet.
So, Schneider and Victor are both addicts. Schneider is an alcoholic and was addicted to cocaine and probably some other drugs. Victor is also an alcoholic and has abused prescription pills. But they handle it in vastly different ways.
Victor thinks he can handle his problem on his own. He doesn’t seek out professional help because he doesn’t think he needs it. He thinks he can still have a few beers before bed. He barely even acknowledges that he has a problem. Plus, he distances himself from family support, and fights with Penelope when she encourages him to get help. Victor is arrogant about his addiction. For Victor, getting help is admitting weakness, and he’s too macho and egotistical for that.
Schneider has been in rehab six times. That’s 6 times he actively sought out help. They play it for laughs–he failed to stay clean 5 times–but addiction is hard, and Schneider didn’t give up on his recovery. He tells Penelope about how he came to terms with the fact that he can never drink again, which is such a hard thing to realize. He talks about Lydia visiting him in rehab, and how much her support meant to him. He hangs out with Alvarezes because they make him want to stay clean. They give him a reason to stay clean.
I love that One Day At A Time chose to show two different ways of handling addiction, one that is blatantly toxic and leads to cyclical behavior, and one that leads to healing and growth. Addiction is hard and people don’t like to talk about it, but as someone who’s experienced it firsthand, I can’t tell you how much I love this plot point.
One Day At A Time Did THAT™
deals with how the impact of colorism as it intersects with racial prejudice via the contrast of alex’s experiences with racism and xenophobia vs. elena’s (because she is white passing). BONUS: when elena is annoyed that she ‘passes’ her family reminds her oppression isn’t aspirational or virtuous
acknowledges that latinx people are not one shade/one race, that latinx can be white passing, black and brown and are still latinx
deals with racism within and between latinx ethnicities, generations, and races
introduces, explains and utilizes preferred pronouns in a respectful way (elena’s gf is non-binary and consistently refered to as they/them)
elena alvarez, awkward lesbian latina queen embodies the Gay Struggle in finding a gf
but also we see her confront her father’s homophobic negligence and no he does not get redeemed, but elena gets closure
DEALS WITH THE HARMFUL HYPOCRITICAL CULTURE OF GUN VIOLENCE
represents the nuanced and traumatic impact of mental health stigma in ethnic communities when penelope goes off her meds so she doesn’t scare away her new partner. we see penelope break down without it being romanticized. we also see her mother, lydia, come to accept her daughter’s struggle with mental illness and support her and there’s a beautiful scene between pen and schneider too
showcased the flaws, bias and hypocrisies in the immigration office of the usa through lydia’s and schneider’s parallel journies to gaining american citizenship
donald trump is gonna get vitamin d deficiency from all the shade thrown at him this season tbh
represents the struggles in romantic relationships at different ages and stages in life through elena with syd, penelope and max and lydia with leslie
there’s a whole episode where this show takes a dump on the elitism of movie theatres when penelope teaches alex how to go to the movies without spending a fortune by smuggling food
elena and schneider learning spanish!
alex and elena’s super sweet sibling bond that grows and is so strong that alex was meeting up with their dad in secret to drag his cis-genered homophobic ass
deals with post 9/11 military movements
RITA MORENO IS EVERYTHING
justina machado gives the most incredibly genuine, nuanced, amazing performance i have EVER seen in a sitcom. the episodes where she’s struggling with ptsd and the finale are STAGGERING and she’s also fkn hilarious
positive rep for latinx family on an internationally broadcast platform??? THATS A BIG YES

I used to mock the fact that so many tv shows and movies use people who are like 29 to play highschool students but you know what if it keeps fewer kids on set where some grody ass fucking pedo director could put their hands on them I’m all for highschool specials with crows feet and five o'clock shadow because honestly like 3 people total in Hollywood can be trusted and they’re on thin fuckin ice
Seasonal PSA from your Local Costume Professional:
Since this is the time of year that families gather and Dead Grandma’s Stuff needs to be dealt with, while we appreciate the fact that fur coats come with a whole lot of emotional baggage around dead animals and cruelty and you want them to be used/reused to make it seem ‘more OK,’ you are not the first person to feel this, OR to think “hey, donating this to a theater costume shop would be great! furs are expensive and I bet they’d love to have this!”
Most theaters I’ve worked in are well overstocked on fur coats, fur stoles, fur collars, fur lined gloves and the like. The sad truth is that they really don’t get used on stage all that much, because they’re REALLY WARM and REALLY HARD TO CLEAN, which is not a great combination when dealing with sweaty actors wearing greasepaint on the daily. Furs are also hard to store well in our often limited storage spaces, and take up a LOT of room.
Unless your fur is in pristine condition and immediately wearable, please don’t give them to us. Instead, may I point you in the direction of “Coats for Cubs,” run by the Humane Society and retailer Buffalo Exchange, or urge you to contact any local wildlife rehab center, and ask if they’d like your fur coat to help baby animals get back into the wild.

it’s the most subtle difference but it’s beautiful.

No offense but your friends are your soulmates too and not just people to complain about your romantic relationship to
sometimes I reread all the “I love yous” you’ve sent me, and I can’t help but to fall in love with you more and more, and to be thankful that you’re mine.
