…I’m willing to let y'all know, darlings, that this comic is coming from a very personal place in my heart, because I legitimately was That One Kid who sat near the back of the classroom quietly eating paper and paste and staples, and other such things. I’m personally quite impressed with myself for surviving into adulthood. Go, me!
(I’ve never tried breaking up one of my comic pages into smaller images for optimal Tumblr-viewing, and I hope this works. Eyes bright, fingers crossed.)

With Pride getting underway, there’s been a lot of discussion online from bi folks about their relationships with their orientation and their individual moments of realization. I’ve seen a lot of anecdotes about struggling with identity because of het-passing relationships that more or less force them to pass as straight, even when they don’t try or necessarily want to. I’ve realized how many bi people don’t feel justified inserting themselves into queer spaces but need a corner of the community where they can relate to and support each other. Getting to know people who feel this way makes me feel like I should say something I’ve kinda hinted at online, but never really discussed.
I’ve fairly recently realized I’m bisexual.
I’ve thought I was straight my entire adult life. As many of my friends came out as gay or bi in college, I definitely did the occasional self-check to see if I had any romantic or sexual attraction to other dude-types, and I always found the idea never did anything for me. I never dated much, but the few relationships and date-like interactions I had were with women. Seven years ago, I married my absolute soul-mate, and we are blissfully and monogamously bonded for life. I couldn’t dream of actually being with anyone else.
But, of course, being in a happy relationship with one person doesn’t mean you literally stop being attracted to every other person on Earth. Attraction (or lack thereof) is part of who you are and there’s nothing odd about the occasional “hmm, nice” upon seeing images of people you could imagine yourself kissin’, no matter how theoretical. And, at some point I can’t quite place in the past year or so, I became aware of the fact that my occasional “hmm, nice” moments have broadened to include more masculine parts of the gender spectrum than I had noticed them doing before. Maybe something shook loose when I moved across the country, or maybe it’s just a thing that’s changing with age. I dunno!
It’s been a bit of an internal struggle of wanting to talk about this, but not feeling like I really “qualify” as bi, since I’m never gonna do anything romantic or sexual with anyone other than my wife. But, as I’ve learned from listening to other bi types, that kind of thinking doesn’t help anyone. Virginity doesn’t blot out your orientation, so why should lack of intent?
Anyway, this is all just a messy way of sharing where I’m at so that I (and maybe other people in a similar place) can just feel a little validated. I’m not going to insert myself into queer events or sign myself up to be on lists of queer creators or anything, because I still feel like that’s not my spotlight. I have nothing but privilege when it comes to how the world sees me, and I want to amplify the voices of people who don’t necessarily have that.
But yeah. My name is Andrew and I’m a bisexual dude. Hello.

Mossy is an all-ages horror/adventure comic about a curious little girl who meets and befriends a towering swamp monster.
Samantha Olivia Byrne is a normal ten year old child who just happens to be obsessed with mythical monsters of folklore, whom she catalogs on her little-read blog. When her parents move to a new town, Sam discovers the nearby swamp is linked to a world populated by fairies, trolls and her new best friend… an eight-foot swamp monster named Mossy!
Bound to the land by mysterious means and charged with protecting the human realm from the creatures of the swamp, Mossy forms an unlikely attachment with Sam as they work together keep the outside world safe from invasion.
Mossy #1 is a twenty-page comic by Kieran Shiach and Traci Shepard that features all of the above and more. It’s intended to be family-friendly, suitable for all-ages and plays with elements of horror without being too scary or menacing. We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring it to print with the aid of this Kickstarter.
