Compare 2 Tablets: Sony Xperia Tablet Z vs Nexus 10

The Nexus 10 was something of a breakthrough device, bringing with it a high-resolution display as well as a price that's fairly aggressive. But with Sony finding its stride with mobile design in 2013, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is a serious competitor. So which way should you turn if you're looking for a big screen Android tablet? Take the purity of the Nexus 10 or the pettiness of the Xperia Tablet Z? In short, which is the best tablet for you?

1. Display face-off The display is essentially what a tablet is and the Nexus 10 has a super-sharp 10.1-inch PLS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. That's 300ppi, incredibly sharp for a tablet. The Xperia Tablet Z is also 10.1 inches, but has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. That's 224ppi, and you'll notice the difference using these tablets side by side, as the Nexus just looks better. The Sony display is also noticeably warmer. Whites aren't as bright and clear, looking more yellow. Although this saturation boost colours, the Nexus 10 just looks more realistic.

2. Who's a lightweight? Sony has poured a lot into the design of the Xperia Tablet Z and it shows. While the Nexus 10 is 8.9mm thick, the Sony tablet struts in at 6.9mm, making it incredibly slender. That's a real bonus when it comes to carrying the thing in your bag, but not as much as the weight: the Z weighs just 495g, whereas the Nexus is 603g. In the hands, that's a weight you really feel when watching movies or playing games: the Sony tablet is a joy to handle.

3. Designed to dunk If you like to take your tablet into the bath, then the Xperia Tablet Z is definitely the model to choose. With IPX5/7 certification, it doesn't mind submersion in water, so long as all the ports have their covers in place. That's a double-edged sword, however, as every time you want to charge it, you'll have to remove those covers.

Asus details Transformer AiO Windows 8 device with detachable Android tablet display

Asus has officially launched its Asus Transformer AiO in the UK, an all-in-one Windows 8 desktop with a display that can be detached and used separately as an Android tablet.

Set to be available to purchase from mid-April, the Transformer AiO was shown at CES back in January, but full specifications and pricing have only just been disclosed.

It is designed to gives users the mobile flexibility of a tablet, combined with the performance of a full desktop PC, all in a compact and stylish package,Asus said.

The Transformer AiO comprises a desktop PC Station that houses the internals of a standard PC, while its 18.4in touchscreen can be detached and used as a remote display or as a standalone Android tablet.

The PC Station offers buyers a choice of Intel Core processors with up to 8GB of memory and a 1TB or 2TB Sata hard drive.

It includes a gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, plus an Nvidia GT730M GPU to drive the graphics, plus the usual array of ports including USB 3.0 and a 3-in-1 memory card slot.

When used on the desktop, the 18.4in display is used as a touchscreen for Windows 8's gesture inputs, as normal.

This 8 inch device handles high-bandwidth ATSC digital signals and low bandwidth mobile ATSC broadcasting signals. While receiving a good signal is limited while on the move, you can still pick up a handful of TV stations. The RCA tablet runs on Android Ice Cram Sandwich and packs an ARM Cortex A5 1GHz processor. While RCA hasn’t directly manufactured it, the company known as Digital Stream based in South Korea, has done a fine job at putting it together and providing a better angle to watching live TV through your tablet. This will likely be just a small selling point as the market for live streaming TV on tablets is still in its infancy stages of being developed.

Google Nexus 7 Launches in Japan

Eric Schmidt appeared in Tokyo today to show off the Nexus 7 to a Japanese audience for the first time. The tablet is available now from the Play store at ¥19,800 (about $254) for the 16GB model, and Google Play Books has also launched in Japan with a fairly solid selection of local content. Schmidt was quick to express his enthusiasm for the Japanese market, saying that it has the third highest number of Google Play installs worldwide and, at 75 percent, customers in Japan proportionally make more purchases on their devices than anywhere else. From October 2nd the Nexus 7 will also be available at major Japanese retailers such as Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, and Joshin — likely an essential move for any success in the country. Google Inc. revealed a new tablet computer, home-entertainment device and Android mobile-software platform Wednesday, adding new technology to its arsenal as it gears up for further battle with Apple Inc. and others.

During a presentation at the company's annual developer conference, Google showed its Nexus 7 tablet which rivals Amazon.com Inc.'s popular Kindle Fire in both size and price. The device features a seven-inch screen that is designed to display books and other media available on Google's Play service.

The tablet was developed together with Asustek Computer Inc. and is "an ideal device for reading books," Google engineering director Chris Yerga said during a demonstration.The Nexus 7 will be available for $199, on par with Amazon's Kindle Fire device and significantly less than Apple's cheapest iPad tablet.

Android is great about multitasking in the sense that background applications will be suspended where you left them. That means you can go back and look at the previous app you were using, but it's going to be in full-screen covering whatever you're trying to look at now. Is this the Google Tablet?

Google Android Nexus Rumors of a Google-branded tablet have been in the air for a few months now, but Thursday brought perhaps the most solid direct evidence that the search company is planning on entering into the tablet melee. While answering questions during Google's earnings call, CEO Larry Page made comments that seem to corroborate the more circumstantial rumors that have been spreading lately. Asked about the company's plans regarding tablets, Page noted that there are a few lower-priced tablets that have found success, but none that run a "full version of Android." New 10.1" Galaxy Note

Behold, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet! We're at Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona where Samsung has unviled its oversized version of the already oversized 5.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note. No official announcement has been made last we looked, but this one just went up in the past 24 hours or so -- it wasn't here when we swung by the Plaça de Catalunya on Saturday morning. It's pretty clear to see we've got a 10.1-inch tablet on our hands, with another version of the S Pen. We can't quite tell from the billboard itself whether the Galax Note 10.1 is sporting Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich, but we'd be willing to bet on the latter.

The Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD has a 1080p display (actually 1920 x 1200), an 8-megapixel camera, and Huawei's new and impressive K3 processor — and it all fits in a body that's just 8.8mm thick. The device is still in its early stages (reps told us the model on display was hand-made for today's event), but even now it's already impressive. The 1080p display looks fantastic, with great viewing angles and sharpness to spare. It's running Android 4.0, and we zipped around the browser and Gallery apps, plus a few games, with virtually no lag. The tablet's due to be available in the second quarter of this year, though reps wouldn't say how much it would cost or where it will initially be on sale.

Cisco's Android Tablet is just for Car Shoppers

Cisco and ADP Dealer Services have come up with a way for car shoppers to have access to a computer while at a dealership. They'll use Cisco's Android tablet. The Cius tablet is an unusual product for Cisco. It's not a consumer product. It is sold only to businesses and it was priced pretty high when the tablet debuted in June.

Cisco said the cost would be around $600 - $700. Cisco was pitching it then as a communication device that could substitute for a desk phone and possibly a PC as well.

Pantech Announces Waterproof Tablet

Pantech has announced the Element, the first waterproof tablet. It is an 8-inch Android device that runs 4G through AT&T. A reviewer at Newsok.com reported that "The dual-core tablet with 1 gig of memory moves smartly from app to app and has a fine display, and when I was caught in a deluge while carrying the device from a distant parking spot to a business' front door I didn't fret. The Element weathered the storm just fine."

The manufacturer says the tablet is waterproof “against incidental exposure” when all ports are tightly closed. It is not designed to be used while diving or lounging on a pool bottom, AT&T said. However, it is built to survive submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

AT&T is offering the Pantech Element bundled with a Pantech Burst dual-core smartphone for $250. You'll need to buy two-year data plans for both devices. The tablet alone costs $50 more, and you'll still need to pay for a data plan.

Android Tablet Sales Triple - Thanks Amazon!

ComputerWorld reported that sales of Android-based tablets "more than tripled during the fourth quarter of 2011". The Amazon Kindle Fire is included in these numbers, even though the Android OS is mostly hidden from view.

Global tablet shipments reached 26.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 150% increase from 10.7 million during the same period in 2010. Consumers are increasingly choosing tablets over netbooks and even entry-level notebooks or desktops, Strategy Analytics said.

Android is picking up momentum, and together vendors backing the operating system shipped 10.5 million units, compared to 3.1 million a year ago. That gives Android a 39.1% share of global tablet shipments, compared to 29% a year earlier. Apple's share dropped from 68.2% to 57.6%, according to Strategy Analytics.
