Circa 1968 Aloisia Rucellai evening bag, gold and platinum, translucent enamel, diamonds, and rubies.
Andromeda always looked slightly older than she actually was; this, naturally, led to problems every once in a while, for example when she was asked at King's Cross whether she was excited for her First Year, when really, it was Bellatrix' First year. There are still stories about the violent screaming that took place at the platform that day.
so, you'd never befriend a blood traitor?
let's just say i'd have to be really out of my mind.
september 14th / my mind is like a heavy hand / andromeda & yusuf
DADA. Easy O for Yusuf. Favorite class. It involved struggle and hardship, it didnât come easy to him, but he was a natural nonetheless. Constantly improving. Probably the only part of his day he gave a genuine fuck about.Â
After all, to know Dark Arts you needed to know the spell that disbanded your hexes.
The teacherâthey had a new one every year, he couldnât remember this oneâs nameâsaid his name. âYes, Ms.â?â
And then he understood exactly what the teacher was saying, saw who his partner was.
Ah, Andromeda Black. Lovely.
Her expression was priceless, really.Â
She came over to his table. She looked much better than before. More cleaned up, posture upright. The pout on her lip, clearly upset for having to work with him, was especially adorable. He tried not to think about that too much.
"Letâs just get this over with," she said.
He sighed, then drawled, âLetâs.â He practiced the wand movements, muttering the spells to get the pronunciation down right. After a few minutes, he glanced at her with an ink-black eyebrow cocked. âThink youâve got it down?â
Andromeda silently watched Yusuf practice the spell a few times without moving. It was easy to see that it came easy to him. "Show-off", she muttered. She felt the urge to leave the room... why did she have to do magic in front of him? She was okay at DADA but hexes had never been her strength... Finally, she started practicing the spell anyway, just mumbling the incantation and moving the wand minimally so he wouldn't see it.
Of course, he noticed her nervousness. He probably had a radar for that. She pursed her lips and threw him a fake smile, awfully aware that if she tried to brag or brush him off, he'd know in a few moments just how well she could do this particular spell.
"Mind your own business", she said. "If I wanted to let you know, believe me, I would." It was unnecessarily rude, and just in that moment, the teacher walked by, throwing her a surprised glance. She glared at him, hoping he would go away. Both of them.

20. How far would you go to protect the ones you love?
I'd do anything for my sisters. Anyone else... not so much.
do you think blood traitors should die?
why wouldn't i think so? they're scum.
who'd you make out with, really? be honest. don't hold back
why do you even care
i have to admit... there is this person that i hate that i would really like to make out with who goes by the name of yusuf khan. i really don't like him at all
you say yusuf is the most attractive person in the school.... if u could do anything w/ him, what would it be?
/blushes heavily
none of your business.
well guess what, i'd make out with him, happy? and drag him into an empty classroom. and lock the classroom, probably. but i highly doubt he'd be into that, and also, he's a halfblood, so.
do you miss sirius?
why would i miss a blood traitor like him? he's nothing to me.
i do. at first i thought i wouldn't, and yeah he's a pain in the ass, but i do miss him.
september 14th / my mind is like a heavy hand / andromeda & yusuf
It was the first day of the term that Andromeda felt she was quite on top of things. This morning, she had woken up, and the aching in her chest had been gone. She had looked in the mirror, and her face hadn't looked that bad. Cissa had smiled at her at breakfast. But when the DADA teacher began explaining that they would team up to work on this new curse, she should have known.
Everyone else had been paired up, and now he stood in front of her desk. "Miss Black, would you be so kind and move your things to Mr Khan's table? I think you two are left." Immediately, that sickening feeling crawled up her back. More than a week had gone by since their weird encounter on the grounds, but something about it still clung to her and irritated her every time she thought about it.
There was no use in picking a fight, so she just got up and walked over to his table, sitting down next to him. It stung once again, how good-looking he was. At least her hair looked better today - at least she was not crying this time. "Let's just get this over with", she said, hoping he wouldn't immediately remember the crying part. Or mention it. He probably would.
the pretty lies, the ugly truth | september 13th | alice & andromeda
Alice gave a soft smile as Andromeda changed the subject. âHey, itâs no matter.â She reached her hand out softly towards Andromeda without touching the other girlâs hand. A peace offering, a careful and measured way of seeing where they stood. She blew air between her teeth and continued, âI mean, I guess schoolâs always given me some sense of grounding, even when everything else seems in near shambles. Or even when things are fine, itâs been nice to have a constant of some sort or another.â She shrugged. âIâll let you in on a secret.â She gave a rue smile. âI donât always love studying either. I love learning, Iâd do it for my life if I could,â she bit her lip, âbut studying can seem over-wrought and not pleasant.â She murmured. âBut I figure since I do sometimes get pleasure from it, I might as well continue on.âÂ
Alice gestured to her papers and books. âAnd I do love the smell of paper.â She paused again. âOh, Care of Magical Creatures?â She gave a small smile. âI know a few who are in that class. Not something thatâs on the top of my list, but itâs interesting to hear them talk about it.â She quickly bit on her tongue, wondering if Andromeda was being sarcastic again. Even if she was, it didnât matter. Who was Alice to judge her for thinking so? She was still here, still talking with Alice, and that had to be against everything sheâd been brought up learning. So Alice smiled again and continued, âif you need help going over things, just let me know. I knowâ-â she sighed, âI know it might not be what others in your house, or family might want but we could always just pass it off as minimal tutoring or whateverâ she rushed through the last words, and ended with, âif youâd ever want.âÂ
There it was again, the awkward tension that never seemed to entirely leave them, despite their attempts to alleviate any sort of tension. But what was important was that they were trying, and in the end, that was all that anyone could really hope for, wasnât it?
"Of course!" Alice brightened at the mention of Shakespeare. Alice tore off a small corner of her parchment and scribbled the name down, passing it over to Andromeda. "Actually, no. Shakespeareâs the surname of William Shakespeare, who was a man. He lived over three hundred years ago, and wrote a great number of plays, which are performed in the muggle world even into today. Itâs truly brilliant, I think." She gave a nod. "But the plays almost read like books, though their language is older than that of Austenâs." She drummed her fingers on the table and pressed her lips together. "He has tragedies, and histories, and a smattering of comedies as well. Theyâre quite intriguing pieces of literature, Iâd say." She gave a soft smile. "Do you have a genre preference?"Â
It was so nice, just being able to talk with Andromeda, not having to focus on the ways that others in their lives would comment harshly on this budding possible friendship, not having to think about the outside world and alliances and trust. They could just be two teenage girls talking. And that felt far nicer that she ever would have imagined.Â
Alice smiled up at Andromeda. âIâm more than happy to find any books youâd like to read, unless you want to search on your own.â She grinned. âYou just let me know what seems to draw your interest, and Iâll do my best to find it.â
To her surprise, Alice's touch calmed her down. It had a weird feeling to it, like she had decided on something and would stick with it now, no matter what happened. That was a lie, of course; even if they were amicable now in this moment, Andromeda knew deep inside she'd betray her new friend in a heartbeat if she had to. She wasn't sure what Alice would do, if her Gryffindor friends, say, cornered Andromeda, would she help her? Stay out of it? Andromeda had fewer run-ins with Gryffindors and all those noble-minded mudblood defenders than Bellatrix, but it happened occasionally.
Alice' offer to pass their friendship off as tutoring amused and saddened her at the same time. If she was forced to mention that she was taking classes with a tutor, her entire family would frown upon her, surely... and then they'd ask for the name, and oh, would they know that name... Not to mention the embarrassment when other Slytherins were to find out she needed help. No. Andromeda shook her head slightly and smiled. "I think we'd better just try to keep it a secret for now", she said and cleared her voice. "I'm sure you wouldn't be too keen to admit you're spending time with me to your friends, either", she added then.
She watched Alice light up as she talked about that Shakespeare. One day, she hoped, she would get as much happiness from something as Alice got from reading, apparently. "Genre preference?", she echoed. That wasn't something she had thought about before, either. "Comedies, I guess?" She could use a good laugh. "Or whatever you would recommend... as, you know, I'm new to this..." Once again, she started smiling without intending to do so.
People walked pass them, but she had stopped trying to identify them; maybe she could just sit here in the illusion that nobody would find it weird; that people would just think they were two girls talking about muggle literature. No big deal.
10, 12, 17
10. Honesty time; anyone youâd like to make out with?
Don't talk to me.
12. Which family members are you closest to, and why?
That would be Bella and Cissa, obviously. They're most important to me, they always have been, they always will be.
17. What are you most embarrassed, or ashamed of? And why?
There's nothing I need to be ashamed of. It kills me to see when mudbloods are better at magic than I am.
3, 7, 8, 14, 19.
3. Do you keep any major secrets from those closest to you, and what are they?
Well, they wouldn't really be secrets if I told them?! I don't really trust my sisters anymore. Or myself.
7. Which are the most attractive people in Hogwarts, in your opinion?
Yusuf Khan.
8. Favourite people from each House? Least favourite people?
I don't really know a lot of people outside of Slytherin? In Slytherin, that would be my sisters - least favourite... I think they know who they are. In the other houses, I really don't know or like anyone. Alice Fortescue is cool, though. And I guess that mudblood Tonks did help me when I hurt my wrist.
14. How many people have you kissed?
I don't really count, but I guess, less than ten?
19. Anyone here youâd straight up like to kill?
Rita Skeeter.
