35+ Android & iOS Cross-Platform Multiplayer Games
Richard Moss on September 12th 2013
You’ve probably come across this problem many times. You want to play the hot new mobile game that you just discovered with your friend, but he or she has an iPhone. What do you do? If you’re lucky, you both pick up a copy of the game and it works — you can connect and play together. But more often than not, you wind up disappointed. It might be available for both platforms, but for some reason you just can’t cross streams.
So you vow to keep an eye out for some great games — new or old — that will let you play with your iOS-loving friends. We shouldn’t have to deal with iOS and Android segregation in this day and age, where solutions for implementing cross-platform multiplayer are plentiful. Here are nearly 40 games that set the example and do it right.
Minecraft Pocket Edition
It’s the mobile version of the game that took the world by storm. At more than 33 million (and counting) global sales across all platforms, Minecraft is a force to be reckoned with. Kind of like Lego in video game form, you dig square blocks out of the environment and use them to build whatever you please.

10 Great Android Multiplayer Games
By Jolie O'Dell 2011-06-05 19:58:19 UTC
With the possible exception of Angry Birds . games are more fun when you can play them with others.
The Android Market is full of great game apps, and there are quite a few multiplayer games in that number, as well — far more than when we first wrote about Android multiplayer games a year ago.
Here's a quick roundup of the best Android pass-and-play and cross-platform multiplayer games, including MMOPRGs, action games, casual games and the ever-popular Words With Friends .
Best Android Multiplayer Games
2 Player Reactor (Multiplayer)
2 Player Reactor is a fast, clean and funny reaction game for two players on the same device.
Challenge your friends (or enemies) to a multiplayer battle of reflexes, wits and knowledge! Great as a bar game, ice breaker or to decide who has to do the dishes.
One of 18 (we continuously add more) exciting mini-games is displayed on screen, and if you think the answer is correct, hit your button faster than your opponent to get a point. But be careful - hit it at the wrong time, and you'll lose one. After a few seconds, the next multiplayer challenge starts - and you can make up for lost points or extend your lead against your adversary!
TWO PLAYERS ON THE SAME DEVICE
Nobody needs to wait, two players, one device, at the same time! Frantic multiplayer action is guaranteed for all ages! Some of the included mini-games require pure reaction, so the younger you are the better, while other mini-games require knowledge of countries in the world and puzzle-solving skills. Who can be the best in all of them?
LOTS OF DYNAMIC MINIGAMES
There are 17 mini-games included (more soon!), and they span all sorts of areas. For example: Who can find the sad face in a group of smiley faces? Does the shown capital city really belong to the country? Can the mouse navigate the maze to the cheese? Hit when the screen turns white! When is the changing labyrinth completed from corner to corner? Has the Countdown hit Zero? React when the Tic-Tac-Toe game is complete! And there's many more!
OLD-SCHOOL CLEAN GRAPHICS
Sporting super-clean and slick graphics, 2 Player Reactor doesn't try to overwhelm or distract you with fancy effects or big explosions. This also means it runs on even the oldest and crankiest of Android devices! Everything in the game has been tested on all kinds of screens, and it runs beautifully on tablets!
SETTINGS TO SUIT EVERYONE
There's a no-brainer "Quick Game" mode that allows you to jump right into the action. But if you hate math, or you only want to play that mode with the smiley faces, or you want a really really long game, you can change everything in the advanced settings menu! And if you're trying to learn a different language, we've got you covered: The game has been translated into 25 mysterious languages such as German, French, Chinese, Persian, Finnish, and many many more.
And there's even more options such as three new difficulties (you should try the INSANE difficulty setting, har har!) in 4 Player Reactor, which you should have a look at if you want more! We're so confident you like it that we offer an unconditional money-back guarantee for that game - check it out!
INDIE GAME DEVELOPER LOVES YOU
I'm an independent game developer and made the game all by myself - which explains the basic graphics (I like to think of them as clean ;)). I hope you like my game, and I totally crave your feedback, just send me an email at [email protected]

The upgraded version, 4 Player Reactor, is also available on the Android Market and it contains many additional game modes, supports up to four friends, a single-player training mode, more difficulties and lots of extra settings for even more multiplayer games fun!

5 Best Addictive Free Multiplayer Android Games
The Android gaming market is still growing and evolving in many ways, but as an Android user myself, I fully realize that it’s still nowhere near the Apple store in many respects. Specifically, multiplayer games seem to be lagging behind on the Android especially given the rapid pace with which the Android market is growing.
That said, there are actually quite a few free multiplayer games out there for the Android that are nothing short of addictive and amazing – they’re just hard to find.
In preparation for this article I was doing some research online to see if there were any multiplayer apps I hadn’t come across, and I kept seeing Cestos, Gang Wars, and Parallel Kingdom. Not that these aren’t great games, but because I’ve seen them so much in reviews, I’m only going to mention Cestos in this article (because yes, I’m addicted). Keep that in mind while reading – I’m trying to hit on a few of the best Android games that may be new to you.
Project INF Beta
This is one of the best Android shooter games I’ve seen for Android, so you can imagine my surprise that not many Android users seem to know about it. Project INF is one of the few free multiplayer games that I play on a regular basis that I feel like I should be paying for.
ChickenBrickStudios has done a great job developing Project INF without making it unrealistic to play on a handheld device. So often handheld games have some of the worst, most painful control configurations known to man, but Project INF’s controls are relatively seamless and I found them very intuitive.
Don’t be put off by the seemingly slow pace that the game seems to have – it’s completely different when the game is in your hands. I personally am grateful that it isn’t any more fast paced because otherwise, there would be 3-4 person games rather than 16-20 person deathmatches. Right now, Project INF lets players compete in deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag events.
You can choose to be a Scout, Marine, or Brute, each class with a distinct skill or advantage that gives it an edge in a certain area. There’s also not really a “best class” in Project INF – just pick the one that fits your style, and customize the rest. Every other time that your character levels up (from kills, flag captures, etc) you are able to pick an aspect of the character to upgrade. This means that your level 30 Scout may be specialized for something else than your friend’s level 30 Scout.
In addition, as you progress you will gain money and have the ability to buy class specific items – whether they be shields that affect certain statistics, or different potions to help you out in a pinch, you’ll want to put your money to good use.
I have one last thing to mention about Project INF: it’s relatively well balanced between levels. Don’t feel intimidated if you’re a level 1 on a map full of level 30+ characters – at level 5 I was routinely killing people more than 20 levels above me. Get comfortable with your character and class, and just have some fun. Besides, you gain levels quickly up until around level 15, so you’ll get competitive pretty quickly.
What are you waiting for? Get Project INF, make an awesome screenname, and enjoy one of the best multiplayer Android games you’ve ever played!
Cestos
Learning this highly addictive game is extremely easy – if it takes you more than 30 seconds to get the hang of things, you’re trying too hard. All players on the map start out with a number of balls, and the object of the game is to knock other people’s balls into pits or hazards – the last man standing wins.
The interesting thing about this game is that turns are done simultaneously; you pick a direction and magnitude for the path of each of your balls, and then double tap to wait for the other player. After both of you have made decisions on where the balls will be headed, they will simultaneously go where you told them to go, leaving mines in their previous locations. ChickenBrickStudios (yeah, the same ones that made Project INF) have a decent set of screenshots that do a good job of explaining the game.
In addition to just the game, there’s actually a community where you can add friends, chat, view your statistics – all that fun stuff you like to see in games.
The cool thing about this style of play is that it’s based on how well you can predict your opponent’s moves – it keeps things interesting and prevents Cestos from becoming another game where a single strategy dominates. In addition, as you play Cestos you will level up and gain different tweaks and mods for your balls (I’m starting to sound creepy here). Mind you, the perks you get are not quite at the level of a game like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, but hey they don’t hurt!
Since Cestos is free, and everyone takes the occasional bathroom break, I would recommend you get on the Android market and download this game now.
What the Doodle Lite (Also see Sketch Online )
This game is nothing short of addictive. Join a room with several contestants, and take turns drawing the words that you are given. It’s essentially Pictionary for your Android device – without the paper of course. You may also have heard about Sketch Online, which is almost the exact same game.
I figured I would mention WTD because I like it more – the people that play it in general are nicer in my experience. Sketch seemed to have a lot of mouthy kids that didn’t really add to the fun of the game. Even though I like What the Doodle, feel free to try Sketch Online out as well – since they’re both free what have you got to lose? (other than your self esteem, but we won’t go there…)
HomeRun Battle 3D Free
Get the free version of this addictive arcade style home run derby-style game on your Android from the Android market. Home Run Battle 3D has some of the most impressive (‘Wii-like’) graphics that I’ve ever seen on an Android yet, and even utilized the accelerometer in your Android device to make gameplay more fun and engaging. The game can get repetitive just playing by yourself, so go online and battle other users on other platforms (yes, iPhone users) to see who can knock the most over the fence.
Here’s a quick summary video of HomeRun Battle 3D that sums the game up better than a few sentences will. By the way; graphics like this don’t come cheap–this thing’s filesize is huge for a standard Android game (22MB).
2 Player Reactor
I should warn you – this game isn’t true multiplayer, because it doesn’t play online. Rather, you and a friend share your Android for this one. The concept of the game is extremely simple – the first one to react to whatever’s in the middle of the screen gets a point. The stimuli vary – sometimes you’re waiting for three matching images in the middle, other times you are supposed to react to the first true statement, etc.
As you can see on the product summary, people love this game – there’s no reason why you won’t. I have this one in my arsenal because you never know when you and a friend will be bored – and since he doesn’t have an Android phone you can’t play any of the other games mentioned! Don’t panic, just get 2 player Reactor and see who’s fastest. Although the video is of 4-player reactor, you shouldn’t have any problem envisioning 2 player.
EXTRA: Quake III (Kwaak3)
Quake III on an Android? Hell yeah! When I heard the news that someone had ported Q3 to the Android, I had to check it out. You already know what the game is – Quake helped make FPS’s on the PC what they are today. What you’re PROBABLY wondering is why I mentioned it in an article about multiplayer Android games.
It turns out that the (blessed) developer that ported the game over to Android has actually tried it on his home network and stated that Quake III ran multiplayer with his home PC just fine! This means that (fingers crossed here) you’ll be able to do the same with your Android 1.6+ device! Say hello to Android-powered Quake III LAN parties.
I don’t want to bore you with details – just check out the video. AndroidandMe has a really good summary article of the entire story, so go read that for more information. All you really need to know is that the game runs at a decent speed (around 26fps on the Droid/Milestone), has multiplayer and single player, and cannot be downloaded on the Android marketplace, so don’t bother looking. Rather, check out the developer’s page and scroll down to “installation” for the required file and a short list of easy instructions. That’s it – enjoy Quake on your device! It ran flawlessly on my Droid and multiplayer went without a hitch as well – let me know in the comments section if you get it working too!
What’d you think of the list of best Android games mentioned here? My focus here was on games that are not hampered by their “Lite” status which sifted out a few games that could be extremely fun multiplayer, but don’t really offer the gamer many features in the ‘lite’ edition. Hopefully you hadn’t heard of one or two of the games I mentioned in this article, and found a game that you really enjoyed (and for such a good price, too!).
So, what’d I miss? Let me know which multiplayer games you play the most on your Android phone!

10 Best Multiplayer Games For Android
Best multiplayer games for Android. Play games on same device with companions.
It is always fun to play with companions. Playing games with friends on the same device sure multiplies the fun, with competition. This is a list of the one device best multiplayer games for Android from the Play Store .
More: Best Multiplayer Games for iPhone and iPad
This is the best 2 player battle game. The interface is simple, and the game play is catchy. Destroy the opponent’s spaceships and earn points. The graphics are clean and it is an easy game to understand.
This is a virtual air hockey game. The graphics are smooth and the visuals are impressive. This is ranked second for the fun which it generates while playing. This game will always be loved.
This game has the potential to be placed in the 1st spot. But the app doesn’t feel smooth sometimes. Nevertheless, this is one of the best multiplayer games out there to play. Up to 4 players can play the game at a time. The longest survivor in the run wins the game.
This game has the best theme among others. Use powers to take down your opponent. The game runs smooth but the interface is not that impressive. It is a very complete game and will be enjoyed. It the opponent manages to knock you down, you’ll loose.
This is another intuitive game. Up to 4 players can play at a time. Control the air crafts, shoot bullets, collect power ups, get stuck, collide with the opponents and dodge the missiles. Everything is packed into this game. Once after getting connected, you’ll play the game for hours.
This game tests the ability to think. The quicker you thing, the better you are. There are many categories of tests that are presented to the players. The graphics and interface are bad, making it stand 5th.
This is a simple challenge between the two players. The one who taps the highest number of times wins the battle. The interface is neat and can be appreciated. The option to change the background colors is natty. Thunder animations for each tap is very impressive. It will be loved by all.
Some games have lost their potential due to bad interface and graphics. But this game has made it into the top multiplayer games solely because of the interface. The theme is a typical cowboy shootout. The concept is simple. The one who shoots first survives the shootout.
This is an intelligent game. In order to understand this game, it is recommended to play the single player mode first. The multiplayer mode (versus mode, as shown in the game) is great for this game. It is so good that you will not want the game to end. The competitive spirit will be maintained through out the game. The target is to send the worms in the right direction so that it reaches the apple.
The all time battle between the cats and the dogs is now interesting. The two players can take the positions of a cat and a dog. The one who manages to throw garbage properly on the other one wins. The traits of cat and dog are funny. Properly evaluating the strength regarding the wind makes the game challenging.
No matter how many games with great graphics come out, they cannot match the fun produced by playing with real people. And these are the best ones from this category. Install and have fun.

MX Player Updated To Work With Android 4.4.1 And 4.4.2
MX Player. one of the most popular video players on the Play Store (and my personal player of choice as of recent), hasn't worked since Android 4.4.1's release. Those who immediately upgraded to 4.4.1 lost access to MX Player and were instead greeted with the following popup:
Annoying, isn't it, especially since the check is implemented from within the app itself rather than by using the maxSdkVersion parameter of the app's manifest? As a developer myself, I sort of understand why J2 Interactive, the player's developer, has put in the restriction, but users may not. Since developers don't get early access to future Android releases, they can't test their apps for potential crashes ahead of time. Then, one day a new version of Android hits, and a flood of 1-star reviews rolls in.
In order to prevent this from happening, some developers opt in for artificial lockout mechanisms. The problem is, these lockouts also prompt bad reviews, this time caused by frustration of being locked out, especially since the apps in question may work just fine all along. Either way, nobody wins, and the developers' best bet is to work as fast as possible to resolve compatibility.
In the meantime, we've received a flood of tips urging us to take the matter public, which I refused to do (AP is not your personal army - we need to show developers some respect). Today, 10 days after 4.4.1's first sighting, J2 Interactive released an update v1.7.21 that finally made MX Player compatible with 4.4.1 and 4.4.2. Whether 10 days is too long or not is impossible to say and up to you to decide - they may have very well run into issues that required development time. I think it's reasonable, especially since we don't know whether someone critical to signing off on the push was on vacation or had emergencies to attend to.
I do have one piece of advice for J2 Interactive and anyone who might end up in a similar situation in the future: talk to your users, keep them updated, don't leave them hanging for a long time, or they start getting nervous. In MX Player's case, such lack of updates is what caused most of the tips asking us for a public nudge (the developer responded quickly but failed to provide any updates after that). Remember, we, the users, understand you may have to work through bugs, and we just want to stay updated, so the least you, the developer, can do is drop a few words here and there. You can do that, right? Awesome.
AccuWeather for Android, Top Weather App
The AccuWeather for Android app offers accurate and localized weather all wrapped together in a beautiful, straightforward interface.
The AccuWeather app includes one of the best weather widgets in its class of weather Android apps. The 4×1 horizontal widget includes a graphic for the current weather conditions (e.g. partly cloudy/sunny), along with the current temperature (plus the RealFeel® temperature), location, and today’s high/low temperatures. Like most other widgets, tapping it launches the full app.
GEICO BroStache Android App: Smartphone, Dumb Things
If you haven’t seen the new GEICO commercial, it asks the question “do people use smartphones to do dumb things?” Watch the embedded YouTube video below. Now when Friday rolls around you can bust out your Android phone to celebrate the end of the week just like the enthusiastic guys in the commercial.
1. GEICO BroStache
Choose from a variety of ‘staches and then hold your phone up to your mouth and begin talking. The microphone automatically detects audio input and will move the mouth accordingly. The “Yeah Dawg” image and sound can also be found by tapping around the top right of the app’s start page (before you get to the ‘staches).
When the time is right, tap the screen for a perfectly rehearsed “Yeah Dawg!” The app’s Android Market description states that the YeahDawg Yeah Dog has “a PhD in both Yeah and Dawg” so you’ll never be disappointed. Yes, really, that’s all this app does.
Unwrap the foil, shake the bottle, and pop the cork like you just won the World Series! Unfortunately, this isn’t the exact app that was featured in the GEICO commercial but is the closest thing available on Android. Enjoy some bubbly!
Offline Multiplayer Android Games
Here is a list of best offline multiplayer android games. The user doesn’t need any internet connection in order to play these games. These games are available for free in the Google play store.
The list of multiplayer android games is showcased to users on the basis of ratings and reviews from Google play store.
Theme : In a world of Gravity rules where all the laws of gravity are broken, a guy runs for his life with a gravity suit to escape from the Gravity troops. The Gravity guy keeps on running and if stops or gets obstructed he is then a dead man. All that a user need to do is to guide the Gravity guy to escape from obstacles and gravity troops.
In the multiplayer version of the game four players are able to play the game. It is upto the players how many will be playing the game and all the players involved plays the game at a time on single screen.
Top Android App: 2Player Network Music Player
2Player is an Android music player for Windows home networks.
Version: 0.83 Beta
Size: 1.51MB
Category: Multimedia
Price: Free (License to support developer
$2.94)
First off, 2Player is extremely easy to use and requires almost no upfront setup (no software download required, like that for Gmote ). The app enables you to play music, a podcast, or other media file on any networked device (DLNA/UPnP supported) around you (e.g. laptop, Xbox360, Playstation 3, DLNA enabled HDTVs). Even better, you also have the ability to play from those devices as well.
A very descriptive example of 2Player’s versatility was provided straight from the developer . “Imagine the following sorts of scenarios. You come home from work; you’re listening to an interesting podcast on your car stereo, played from phone via bluetooth. As you walk in the door, 2player detects your Wi-Fi network, and continues where you left off, playing on your stereo system, connected to your TV. Later on, you put on a little jazz (served up by Windows 7 from your iTunes music collection), and transfer that (using your phone) onto the WD TV Live plus device in your dining room. Music everywhere; with your phone at the center of it all acting as remote control and traffic director, and serving or playing as required.”
2Player is most compatible with Windows 7, which runs Windows Media Player 12 (Windows XP only supports WMP 11). If you’re having any issues, make sure that you have enabled “play to” and “play from” on the media devices you intend to use. If you’re running Windows XP (like me), you’ll have to use non-Windows media servers like XBMC or Twonky.
2Player only supports audio files (no video). This actually proves beneficial in that it allows for an optimized user interface and overall functionality. If you enjoy this app, consider paying for the License which supports the hardworking developer!
“Play to” and “play from” support for all networked media devices that support DLNA and UPnP
Simple, streamlined user interface
Support forums and a very dedicated developer
Areas for improvement:
Support for use with a 3G connection.

This is where the Droid Bean’s Top 7 Table-Top multiplayer games on Android list come in handy. Without further ado, here are the Top 7 Table-Top multiplayer games on Android:
7. Wordsmith
While Wordsmith is not exactly the kind of game you and your friend will be frantically interacting with, but it does require intelligence and a good command on English vocabulary. The game plays like traditional scrabble and has a mandatory turn based gameplay, but it does fit the bill of a table-top multiplayer game. Some may be put off by the lack of action on this title, but many of our older readers will appreciate that they can enjoy a great game with coffee in their hands. It is a timeless game which not only hones your language skills but also offer an educational experience to the young gamers. ITV Player
ITV Player is an online video on demand service accessible though the main ITV website itv.com. The service offers a variety of programmes from homegrown programming to imports across ITV. ITV2. ITV3. ITV4 and CITV. Some sports programming is available to watch again via the service, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and highlights being examples. Some programmes, imports and movies are not currently available due to rights issues, and until the latest version, most children's programming in particular was generally unavailable. Programmes are available for 30 days on the site after being first shown on ITV. The service was originally called ITV Catch Up but was then rebranded 'ITV Player' on 5 December 2008 as part of ITV’s aim to create a recognisable and consistent brand for video-on-demand content across the web and TV. [ 1 ] ITV Player is also branded as ITV Net Player and referred to as the ITV Network Player in branding and communication around programming intended for consumption across the UK, such as on Virgin Media. [ 1 ]

Web platforms [ edit ]
The service started out as a website before being extended to television and other platforms. Initially the website version used Microsoft Silverlight as opposed to Adobe Flash (used by BBC iPlayer and Channel 4's 4oD ) and Windows Media Video. ITV adopted Flash for its player on 15 September 2009. [ 3 ] In November 2009 the website was revamped again improving navigation as well as making the site more visually appealing. The service is free to use funded by pre-, mid- and post-roll adverts. Previously users have been able to use ad-blocking software to skip the adverts shown. During Summer 2010, the ITV website was upgraded to detect ad-blocking software. Video is sent at multiple bit rates and uses adaptive technology in the player to best determine rate based on users connection.
Improvements were made in June/July 2011 to the website version to incorporate subtitles and CITV programming. The website version relaunched with a cleaner, less cluttered new look on Monday 22 August 2011. The new look seamlessly fits in with the redesigned itv.com and has upgraded search features, images and a new Flash video player designed to make playback more reliable. In January 2012, the site was due to be overhauled to offer paid-for content in addition to the existing free 30 day catch up, [ 4 ] however this was delayed until 29 October 2012. [ 5 ]
Content that has only aired on ITV (rather than also on ITV2, 3, 4, or CITV) is only available to viewers located in ITV plc regions (in England. Wales. the Channel Islands. and southern Scotland ). If the programme was also aired in Northern Ireland. or central and northern Scotland, then users located in those areas may be able to view it on the catch up services of UTV and STV respectively. The ITV Player website will attempt to detect your location automatically, using that provided by your ISP.
Television platforms [ edit ]

Freesat [ edit ]
A place for a full version of ITV Player has been reserved on Freesat channel 903. [ 8 ] A beta release was made available in December 2010 for Humax receivers, requiring the input of a code. [ 9 ] The beta was made public on 26 July 2011, with support expected to be extended beyond Humax devices. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] On 31 July 2012, an update was released for Manhattan receivers which included support for ITV Player. [ 12 ] In November 2012, both EchoStar and Samsung receivers also received ITV Player support. [ 13 ] [ 14 ]

ITV Player initially only offered archive content, with catch-up programming becoming available on 26 September 2012.

[ 17 ] The deal allows Virgin Media’s 3.5 million TV customers to view over 40 hours of programming from ITV, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 each week. Popular shows such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale are all available for seven days after being broadcast as part of Virgin Media's free Catch up TV service. The service began a three day deployment programme on 24 February 2009. Virgin Media’s viewers were able to choose from 500 hours of ITV comedies, documentaries and dramas, on demand through the TV Choice section, however the contract to supply archive content ended on 23 February 2013. [ 18 ]
YouView [ edit ]
ITV Player was one of four service available at the launch of YouView in July 2012. At launch the ITV Player app contained options to resume watching recent programmes and browse by channel, day and A-to-Z, but lacked integrated search and contained non-skippable adverts. [ 19 ] During 2013, ITV intend to introduce paid-for content content into ITV Player on YouView. [ 2 ]

2Player Streams Music From One Device To Another [Android]
Using your Android phone as a remote control is nothing new. We have already discussed how to remote control VLC and iTunes right from your smart handset. What about a different kind of remote control, like remote controlling the streaming of music from one device to another?
2Player is an Android music player with integrated support for devices on your home network. It allows you to play your computer’s music collection on your phone; play from your phone onto your DLNA television; or even directly from your Windows 7 computer to your XBOX 360.
Unlike other music streaming software that require you to upload your music files to the cloud, 2Player works directly using the DLNA network protocol to move music from your media server devices, onto your media renderers, wherever they may be. While it may sound complicated, it is surprisingly easy to use.
Install the 2Player app from the market (market link)
Launch the 2Player app. You should see the following interface.
The top dropdown is where you select the music source (play from) while the bottom dropdown bar represents the target (play to). If there are no DLNA or UPNP network devices available, you can only choose the local device.
When “local device” are chosen for both the source and target, the app will become a local music player.
The magic happens when you have network devices connected. You will be able to choose from the different devices and stream music from one to another. For example, you can stream the music from the computer in your room to the PS3 in your living room, or just play the music from your Android device to your Home stereo system.
2Player is free to download/use. However it is licensed under the “Good Karma License”.
The Good Karma License is based on the following premise: that human beings are – more often than not- decent.
Here’s the deal: I won’t mine your personal data, expose you to literally thousands of ads for things you don’t want, or try to trick you into downloading a “free” application that is nothing but an elaborate ruse to make you pay for the “Pro” version. Instead, I’m going to give you a fully functional trial version of the software, for you to use as you see fit. In exchange, I expect you to pay for a license if you like and use my program.
It’s a simple proposition. I trust you to do the right thing, and hopefully, we all end up a little better off as a result.
The developer has certainly made it easy for anyone to use the app. The “Good Karma License” will cost you US$2.91. You have got the fully functional app in your device, it is really your call whether you want to buy the license.
King of Party offers multiplayer mini-games on iOS and Android
Image via Codigames
Codigames has announced the launch of its new mobile title ‘King of Party,’ which challenges up to four players to earn the best scores they can across a variety of mini-games to find out which player truly is the King (or Queen) of Party. The game was inspired by titles like Nintendo’s Mario Party, and therefore focuses on short play sessions, which work well on mobile.
Players start King of Party with three of the six available mini-games unlocked. The other three can be purchased with 50 Diamonds, or $4.99. Each game utilizes a combination of touch or tilt controls, as players try to last the longest at their current task.
The Skate Run game, for instance, sees players swiping up or down on the screen to force their avatar to jump or duck under obstacles while on a skateboard. The Fitness game is like Simon Says, as players must mimic the workout moves of their trainer at the top of the screen. Finally, the Balance game asks players to tilt their device to keep their avatar balanced on top of a pole. The wind randomly changes direction, so players must combine fast movements with observation to keep their avatar steady as long as possible.
Image via Codigames
King of Party offers limitless singleplayer gameplay on all of these modes, but the focus is on multiplayer games with friends or strangers around the world. Players earn experience points when they compete against others (useful for unlocking the “ranked match” option), but can earn coins even when playing by themselves. These coins are used to purchase new customization options for their avatars, like clothing items and hairstyles.
King of Party is now available to download for free on iOS and Android. and supports cross-platform multiplayer games and international leaderboards. Check back soon to follow the game on AppData. our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.

Offline Multiplayer Android Games to Play on a Single Device
A lot of Android games today are designed with social features that most likely require an Internet connection. If you’re off the grid, you’re out of luck. But, it’s not the end for Android gamers who prefer playing with friends on a single device (i.e. offline multiplayer). There are still game developers out there who occasionally release games meant to be played by more than one person without needing another smartphone or tablet. Not everyone can afford the gadgets anyway, even more so when they need to spend for mobile data too. That latter fact also reminds me that online or Wi-Fi multiplayer games don’t always provide the same fluidity that couch multiplayer games offer.
Scrounging the Internet and the Google Play Store made me discover fun Android games, listed below. I didn’t bother ranking them since they have their own merits. Depending on the type of gameplay you want, you can find great games to try out here in my list. These are meant to be played with friends in person so as to guarantee a much-needed intimate and social satisfaction.
By Halfbrick Studios
Fruit Ninja puts you in the role of a stealthy martial artist to hack and slash, um, fruits. It doesn’t really improve your skills to become a true ninja warrior, but it still is damn addictive as you enter a fruiting slashing spree and hear the squishes and splats of apples and bananas.
According to the developer, this app is still in ‘beta’ and is slated to have more mini-games in the future. Besides the aforementioned three modes, there are more to unlock when you pay for the app’s premium version.

Only the THD version—the one that’s designed for tablets—offer the splitscreen multiplayer. On the other hand, your friend can join your adventure using his phone or desktop computer through cross-platform WiFi multiplayer.

The game supposedly features smooth and responsive gameplay, as well as realistic physics. But in my actual experience, the paddle is slow to react to my finger swipes, making the game unpredictable and ensuring victory hard to accomplish.
Wordsmith
By Second Breakfast Studios
Genre: Brain & Puzzle | Play Store Link: Free (ad-supported), Paid
Do you want to know how your vocabulary knowledge fares against that of your friends? Wordsmith, while admittedly lacking the fast-paced actions in many multiplayer games, is the recommended app for those looking for an intellectual challenge. Bring back the old days of the classic tabletop game Scrabble to your Android device.
If you want to take the game up a notch, check out Wordsmith Tournament . It’s basically the same game but allows up to 32 players competing in a bracket to determine the best wordsmith of all!
The Hardest Game Ever 2
By Second Breakfast Studios
Genre: Casual | Play Store Link: Free (ad-supported, with in-app purchase)
This very addictive series of mini-games are, at heart, meant to be played by a single person. But many of the games only lasts for less than a minute and the success rate is very low. In other words, you and your friends can easily take turns in attempting to finish a game and obtain a good score/grade.
While free, the app is riddled with rather obtrusive advertisements that somehow detracts its replay value. Luckily, there’s an in-app purchase available to disable ads and allow instant retries during game overs.
Worms 2: Armageddon
By Team 17 Digital Limited
The popular classic PC game is now on Android, fully equipped with brand new weaponry and customizations. Don’t forget more mayhem and explosions! Of course, the tried-and-tested weapons we’ve learned to love are still here: Holy Hand Grenade, Sheep, Concrete Donkey, etc.

Your tablet (Kindle or Galaxy) uses the Android Operating System.
Adobe stopped ALL development of Flash for Android last year. (July 2012) That includes Kindle as well as Samsung Tablets. Additionally, Samsung and Amazon have ended support for Flash in ALL of their newest tablet models.
The following is from Samsung Support (07/31/2013):
"Beginning August 15, 2012 we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th, 2012. "
And from Kindle Support (07/31/2013):
"The Amazon Silk web browser on Kindle Fire 1st Generation supports some, but not all, versions of Flash. Adobe Flash is pre-installed on a 1st Generation Kindle Fire and is disabled by default.
If you see a message to install Flash while using your Kindle Fire, this means that the content you're attempting to view uses Flash. If you want to view the content, you'll need to enable Flash through the Silk settings menu.
If a web page suffers from slow performance due to Flash, or you're unable to view a web page with Flash enabled, we recommend switching to mobile view when browsing a Flash-heavy website to see if that solves your problem:
Some popular websites may also have an app available. Check Amazon Appstore, accessible through the Apps library on your Kindle Fire, for availability.
The Amazon Silk web browser on Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" doesn't support Flash.
Some sites use alternative web technologies to Flash in their mobile versions. We recommend switching to mobile view when browsing a website with Flash content to see if that solves your problem:
Some popular websites may also have an app available. Check Amazon Appstore, accessible through the Apps or Games library on your Kindle Fire, for availability."
There are older versions of Flash Player (for Android) at that link, but there are no guarantees any of them will work.
You can find info about "Dolphin" for Android at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser It seems to be the browser of choice to play Flash content on an Android device.
Also, check the Android forums to see what their "gurus" recommend.

Paper War for 2 Players, Enjoyable Cannon Blaster Android Game for Two!
Paper War for 2 Players . A fun and simple game for 2 people. If you like 2 Player Reactor. you must like our game too! The game is best for killing boredom time between 2 people. So you will feel at ease in the moment.
Tested on: Samsung Galaxy Tablet, Motorola Xoom, HTC Thunderbolt
AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review :
Pros & Cons:
Fun two player game in the style of 2 Player Reactor!
Extremely easy to play!
Three mini games in one package!
Excellent cartoon like atmosphere developed through sound and artwork!
Great replay value for existing games!
Free!
Controls for Anti-Aircraft are somewhat hard to maneuver effectively.
No use of vibration.
Only three types of mini games while competitors like 2 Player Reactor are in the double digits.
Features:
Paper War for 2 Players is a fun little two player game in the style of 2 Player Reactor. The game has three different modes: Anti-Aircraft, Plane Smasher, and Cannon Battle. In each of these modes two players are put to the test in a simple yet fun to play touch screen mini game. Each game requires a quick reaction time and a little bit of luck!
In the Anti-Aircraft mode each player is pitted against the other in a turret operated shooting contest. They are each given one cannon and a series of planes will fly by on the screen. Your job as the player is to shoot down your opponent’s planes, but to avoid shooting your own. In order to shoot you rotate the cannon with your finger then tap on it in order to fire a shot. If you shoot down one of your own plane’s your cannon will become stunned and you will be unable to fire for a few seconds. For each of your opponent’s planes you shoot down you receive points and the game ends when the timer runs out.
In Plane Smasher mode all you need to do is smash your opponent’s planes by hitting them with your finger. Planes from both teams will fly across the screen and your only job is to hit the planes that are the same color as your opponent’s team. If you accidently hit one of your own planes it does not stun you, unlike in Anti-Aircraft mode, instead it gives the points for the kill to your opponent. I liked this mode the best because the controls were a little bit touchy in Anti-Aircraft mode, and in Plane Smasher mode all you had to do was tap on your opponent’s planes. It seemed the most like 2 Player Reactor.
In Cannon Battle you each control one cannon and try to launch rocket’s at your opponent’s cannon over a obstacle. This mode is easier to control then Anti-Aircraft mode. I felt like the controls worked better and it was easier to aim with less targets. Occasionally parachutes will drop down and you can shoot them down for extra points.
You can also tweak the options for Paper War for 2 Players to meet your individual play style. You can invert the controls for either player in all of the mini games. You can also change the target score for each of the games as well, allowing you to play the game for a longer period of time without having a winner declared as quickly.

Paper War for 2 Players Options
Fun Factor:
Paper War for 2 Players is quite enjoyable to play when you want to kill some time at work with a friend. I especially like the Plane Smasher mode because the controls were easier to operate and it played out much smoother then the other 2 modes. I found that in Anti-Aircraft mode the controls were somewhat choppy and the process to fire a missile took much more work then it should have. This resulted in me firing much later then planned and often times shooting down my own planes. In Cannon Battle the controls were much easier to use, but the gameplay was less exciting. Despite their faults all of the mini games were fun to play with another person, and as a whole I enjoyed playing it immensely!
Addictive:
Paper War for 2 Players is very addictive. The first time I played this with my girlfriend she made me replay each mini game several times until she could beat me. The sound effects are cute and add to the fun feel of the game. I would love to see more mini games added in the future or a mode which involved more then one game. This would increase the player’s average play time and add to the addictiveness of this game quite a bit.
Graphics:
The graphics for Paper War for 2 Players were great. They were exactly what I would have expected from a game of this style, perhaps even better than expected. The style of the artwork contributed greatly to the feel of the game, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing about the way the game was displayed.
Another awesome thing about this game is that it formats perfectly on every device. I tested it on my HTC Thunderbolt, Galaxy Tablet, and Motorola Xoom and on each device it performed flawlessly. This is one of those special types of games that increases it’s play value with a bigger screen instead of decreasing it.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The game makes no use of the accelerometer or vibration. Accelerometer controls or adjustments could not really fit in with the play style, but I think vibration would be a welcome feature to this game. It would make the game more enjoyable to feel vibrations when you destroy your opponent’s aircraft or when you stun yourself during the Anti-Aircraft game. Hopefully that is something the developer will add in the future.
The sound effects for the game were excellent. They were simple and cartoon sounding, which adds to the feel of the game and contributes to the atmosphere that the artwork is meant to inspire. Music is a possible addition for future implementations of this application, but it would have to be just right in order to contribute to the feel of the game without taking away from it’s existing atmosphere.
AndroidTapp.com Rating
Should you Download Paper War for 2 Players. If you like 2 Player Reactor then you should download Paper War for 2 Players. It still has a few kinks to work out, but it is extremely enjoyable and the atmosphere of the game is great. With the addition of more mini games and refinement of the controls this game could easily overtake if not surpass Two Player Reactor and other games like it!

StarDunk Gold (iPhone) $1.99
In StarDunk, a new online competition starts around every two minutes. The battles are always the same: use your finger to define the angle and strength of your shot on the game’s 2D plane and try to sink as many shots as possible. There’s a lot of strategy involved, too, though. First off, if you’ve got the skills to make quality nothing-but-net shots over and over, you can rack up serious points with increasing point multipliers. But put shots into the backboard and light the four panels that make it up and you can grab a bonus, like a triple-ball, a bigger hoop or a multiplier on your shots. Continuing to rack up points earns you currency to spend on different balls with special abilities, and each match you play in puts you on the StarDunk leaderboard, so you can see exactly how you stack up.

Top 10 Best Multiplayer Android Games
Multiplayer Android Games: Get your game on—on the go, that is—with ten of these great multiplayer games. Some of these titles even feature cross-platform capability so you can game with your friends on the iPhone.
The Android is one of the most popular gaming platforms out there. No, seriously. As a smartphone OS, the Android has a huge marketshare that is ahead of the iOS with a 51%-43% lead in 2013. It's a figure that the iOS had ahead of the Android a year back.
Since then, the Android's proved itself a worthy contender in the field of smartphone operating systems and provides its users with every bit of a gaming ecosystem as its Apple counterpart.
Despite popular belief—and heavy amounts of marketing from Apple—the Android is every bit of a gaming platform as the iOS. Offering decent graphics, a flawless touch-based interface and multiplayer capability, Android phones are no stranger to games.
Here’s a decisive roundup of the best multiplayer games that the Android has to offer, including MMORPGs and board games.
#10 Pocket Legends
Pocket Legends earned critical acclaim from a variety of tech sites, including Mashable and PocketGamer for offering a good massively multiplayer experience for gamers on the go.
Players choose their character, develop their abilities and journey into a variety of dungeons alongside other players in this cooperative online game. You need not apply for a World of Warcraft subscription or own a PC to get your game on.
#9 Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is the fourth and latest game from Gameloft Montreal that attempts—successfully—to emulate the gameplay of the Call of Duty series for the iPhone and Android.
The game is controlled using virtual buttons on-screen and a virtual control stick is used for movement. For a first person shooter on the mobile, it offers a surprising amount of options as players can crouch behind cover, mantle obstacles, throw grenades, reload manually, and aim down their iron sights.
As with previous titles in the series, Zero Hour features a multiplayer mode that allows up to twelve players to participate in any given game, and fight in levels based on the single player campaign.
The game succeeds in delivering a solid shooter for the mobile platform where Activision fails to deliver a solid Call of Duty, much to everyone's chagrin.
#8 Starfront: Collision HD
It looks, feels, and plays like StarCraft, but until we see a StarCraft game ported to the Android, Starfront: Collision will have to satiate our hunger for a good RTS.
Like the much better StarCraft on the PC and Mac, Starfront: Collision offers three distinct races, each with their own campaign, and four-player multiplayer over Gameloft Live, where players can do battle against other players in one vs one, or cooperate in two vs two.

Step 3 – Play content individually or as taglists. These lists can come from your friends, or they can come from users tagging a video with a certain term, like #startaparty.

More Ways to Play Knack: Co-op Mode, Mobile App Detailed
+ Posted by Nick Accordino on Nov 07, 2013 // Associate Project Manager, SCEA
Hello, everyone. We’re just a little over a week away from the launch of PS4. and I can’t wait for everyone to finally get their hands on Knack. If you’re looking for a taste of something different, something a little more old-school, Knack is the perfect PS4 game for you. With Knack. not only are we taking gamers back to the days of classic games like Crash Bandicoot, we’re also introducing some new and unique ways to experience the game.
We have a unique two-player coop mode that puts a fun twist on traditional co-op games and is a great reason to pick up an extra DualShock 4 controller. If you own a PS Vita. there’s of course Remote Play, which can even work in conjunction with our two-player co-op. We have a fun social connectivity feature that lets you unlock collectibles faster through your network of PSN friends, and finally, we have a brand new standalone mobile game app called Knack’s Quest. I’m here to talk about all of these today.
Knack’s co-op is a little different from some cooperative games you may have played. From the very beginning, Knack was meant to be both a challenging and rewarding old-school style character action game, as well an accessible “gateway” title for gamers to initiate their friends and family members into the joys of true console gaming. On Normal or Hard, the game can be brutally challenging and very rewarding. But with simple controls and Easy mode, even new players can experience the world of Knack.
In Knack, our two-player cooperative mode was designed in a way that accentuates the vision for the game. A second player can drop in or out at any time, and control Knack’s shiny metallic helper, Robo Knack. Robo Knack has a move set somewhat similar to Knack’s, but can donate parts to Knack and heal him with a touch of the Triangle button. If there’s a non-gamer or light gamer in the house, this is a great way to introduce them to the world of Knack – just start the game on Easy and drop in from time to time to help them through the game.
Oh, and if you enjoyed the smack fests in LittleBigPlanet, you’ll find some fun in smacking your on-screen partner when he or she least expects it.
As you play through Knack’s story mode, you’ll no doubt find walls and doors that are begging to be smashed, burnt down or otherwise destroyed. There are over 60 of these rooms — some are out in the open, but some are a little trickier to find. Inside these rooms, you’ll find a chest that holds a collectible item: either a gadget part, or a rare Crystal Relic.
There are eight gadgets in all, and each requires anywhere from 3 to 7 parts to complete. Once you complete a gadget, Knack can equip it to enhance his abilities or add new ones. A few of my favorite gadgets are the Combo Meter, which allows Knack to boost his attack strength by hitting enemies 8 times in a row without taking damage himself, and the Harvester, which lets Knack collect sunstones from defeated enemies. In these chests you may also find Crystal Relics, like diamonds or rubies. If you find enough of any single kind of rare Relic, you’ll unlock a new form of Knack to use in a second play-through of the game. Each Knack variation has different characteristics such as super strength, super fragility, etc.
Finding these secret rooms and collecting gadget parts and Relics is fun, but it’s even more fun when you have friends playing the game as well. Whenever you find a secret chest, you’ll be able to either take the item you found in the chest, or choose any item a friend found in that same room the last time they played. This can really come in handy when you’re trying to complete those gadgets or unlock that last Knack variant. Your gadget collection even carries over to new playthroughs, so you can work on getting all eight handy gadgets.
You’ll also find secret areas holding more parts to help you heal and grow, as well as Sunstone crystals to fill up your super move gauge.
Lastly, we just launched a new mobile game app called Knack’s Quest as a FREE download for iOS devices (Android version coming soon). This game is a standalone three-in-a-row jewel game featuring Knack himself. Gather parts to help Knack grow before the time runs out to clear the level. Unlock endless mode by beating all levels, and post your scores in global and friend rankings.
What’s more, you can also unlock gadget parts and rare Relics for use in the full Knack game on PS4. Once PS4 launches on November 15th, there will be an update to the mobile app that connects it to the PS4 game, allowing you to transfer all of your unlocked items over to your full game. Even if you don’t have a knack for these kinds of games (excuse the pun), you can enlist a friend or family member to work on unlocking items for you.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about the game and co-op mode in the comments below! Look out for Knack on November 15th!

The Best Games for both iOS and Android
Last Update: December 7, 2013: Browse through games by genre—there is something for every gaming taste on this list. This newly-updated list also includes links to the Android versions through Amazon (as available) as well as Google Play so that Kindle Fire users can get their game on as well. Librarians are classically seen as cultivators and curators of books, though over time that definition has grown to include newer forms of media such as recorded music, film, comics, and now games of all sorts, particularly video games. I like to think of myself as one such librarian, as video games grow in importance as vehicles for deep narrative, artistic expression, online interaction, education, and much more. Speaking personally, games can be just as important to me as books, sacrilegious as that may sound. For this blog entry I would like to write about mobile games. With the rise of the iPhone and Android phones, mobile gaming has become increasingly impressive and important. Gone are the days of simple distractions such as Bejeweled or Snake, ushering in a period of truly meaningful and engaging games that can be carried in your pocket.
Mobile gaming on platforms such as iOS and Android is important for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the barrier to entry has been drastically lowered. Releasing games on consoles or for PC platforms such as Steam can often be a huge and costly pain, but you can publish pretty much whatever you want to on mobile, particularly on Android, and the respective app stores only take a 30% cut of sales. On a related note, since the barrier to entry is so low, game developers don’t have to rely on big-name publishers as much to push out their product, meaning they answer only to themselves and are free to pursue development of anything they like. Second, because mobile platforms are underpowered compared to consoles and PCs (though they are becoming increasingly powerful), more focus has to be paid to a rich gameplay experience and original art design rather than photorealistic graphics that cost millions to develop. That’s not to say that there aren’t such games being released for mobile, but the majority rely on simple graphics and originality. And finally, the use of a touchscreen rather than physical controls has pushed mobile game designers to come up with new and intuitive control schemes. A lot of people decry mobile games simply because they don’t have physical controls, but I like to think instead of the hard work designers have put into coming up with ways around such limitations.
Unfortunately, there are many junk games (shovelware) available, including the glut of “free-to-play” games that you can download for free, but which quickly start demanding money for access to most features. As a mobile gaming fanatic, I’m here to give you some of the best, available for both Android and iOS. Most of these cross-platform games cost a few dollars but are still much cheaper than most free-to-play titles would be. Please note that just because a game is purchased for iOS does not mean that you also have access to the same game on Android without paying for it again and vice-versa.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 review: Android media player that needs more of a voice
More Info
It wasn't all that long ago that one of the pinnacles of the gadget world was the PMP. How many gigs has yours got? Mine plays FLAC. Whoa, iPod video! These are sentences that are largely consigned to the digital mists of time. Now that your phone, watch and pretty much any other gadget can fill the shoes of the media player, its days among gadget nobility are numbered, and its rank slipping ever lower. There will always be a corner of the gadget realm for them but it's more of a country cottage, compared to the sprawling manor of yesteryear.
Why all the nostalgia? Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.2 is the latest descendent of the Android media player lineage, and the company's rightful heir to its PMP kingdom. As you can see, a full-fat media player in 2012 wears a very different uniform than its forefathers, and definitely fights a different battle. Can what is essentially a phone-without-a-phone. hold its territory and prevent the mobile bandits from scaling the walls? We spend some time with it in the trenches to find out.
Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 review

Hardware
Make no mistake: this looks like a phone. Specifically, a Samsung-made Android phone. Why, more than once during our testing period we were asked if this was that new Galaxy handset. Makes sense to us -- the similarities are endless. There's the plastic body, the "home" button, the capacitive buttons at the bottom, even the top and bottom speaker grills. The only notable differences are under the battery cover. Whereas you might typically expect to see a SIM slot, there is, of course, nothing. Well, not nothing . exactly, as there is a 1,500 mAh battery and microSD slot (to augment the on-board eight or 16 gigs by up to 32GB). Still, you get what we mean. While it shares much of the DNA of the Galaxy line of cellphones, it does seem to lack a little of their flare. It's by no means ugly, just serviceable. Screen, button, ports, done.
As you'd expect, that display is a 4.2-inch WVGA affair. That screen is ringed by a thin band of chrome, which adds a dash of variety to an otherwise generic device. If you take a close look at the player's profile, there's a tiny lip created by the chrome band, but fortunately it's not enough to catch the dirt and fluff that might circulate in your pocket. The home button, however, manages to stand ever so slightly proud of this, making it protrude just a touch above everything else on the front face. This didn't cause any functional issues and it sits nicely under the thumb. However, the button's placement might expose it to a little more wear than if it were less pronounced. The devil is in the details.
If you've ever clasped one of the larger Samsung Galaxy phones in your palm, you'll have a good idea of what this is like: well-built, from ho-hum materials.
The only other punctuation marks on the device are the volume rocker / power buttons flanking the right, a 3.5mm headphone port down the bottom, the micro-USB port next to it, and the front (VGA) and back (two-megapixel) cameras. Unlike the Galaxy Player 4.0. the speakers are around the front (those grills we mentioned earlier). The end result is a device that looks better than some of its PMP siblings, but lacks the visual character of some of its mobile cousins. If you've ever clasped one of the larger Samsung Galaxy phones in your palm, you'll have a good idea of what this is like: well-built, from ho-hum materials.
Performance and battery life
Given that it's expected to perform many of the same tasks you'd want from a higher-end phone (media, apps, games, etc.), it's odd Samsung only saw fit to bless the Player 4.2 with a 1GHz OMAP processor. To be fair, navigating menus, viewing videos and listening to music all seemed to be taken well in its stride, so no complaints there. But as you add more apps, and things get more demanding, we can imagine cracks starting to form. And what about the battery? Well, the product page on Samsung's website promises six hours of video playback time. That honestly matches pretty closely with our own testing. In fact, we actually got six hours and 43 minutes out of it when playing a looped video at 50 percent brightness, so better than expected.
As for everyday use, the runtime will naturally depend on your usage habits. As we played with it, occasionally web surfing or firing up some tunes, it tended to hold out for the better part of two days, which seems average. While it might have one less radio to deal with compared to a phone, it's also burning through the battery when playing back your media, which has its own power demands. Speaking of which, we know you love a good benchmark, so we thought we'd run a few just out of curiosity. The Player 4.2 rolled through SunSpider with a lowly 6748.6 score, down in Samsung Stratosphere territory. Vellamo ranked it just behind the Nexus S, however. Meanwhile, it managed only 9fps in GLBench. A mixed bag at best.
Audio quality
Maybe we're foolish, maybe we just like to get in the zone, but the Galaxy Player 4.2 is simply not loud enough. If you like your music at more pedestrian levels, then it will likely suffice, but more than once we found ourselves mashing the volume rocker in an attempt to eke out a little more juice. Sure, you don't want it cranked up all the time, but when your favorite song comes on, it's nice to pump it up a touch, right? To be fair, it's about as loud as the Galaxy Nexus, so it's not as if Samsung's notched it down on this device. Still, though, the OG iPod shuffle handily trounces it when it comes to straining those eardrums.
There are EQ controls, which might help you tweak the sound to your taste, but it's far from ideal. If anything, we were more inclined to just jack all the sliders up to milk a little more volume out of it.
The sound you do get, however, is fine. This is of course assuming you binned the accompanying headphones for something much more suitable. We took a holistic approach to critiquing the audio, which is to say we did nothing more scientific than spend lots of time listening to it. We assume this is likely what you will be doing with it too, so it only seemed apt. In this regard, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is most definitely adequate. It would be unfair to call the sound bad, so we won't. In fact, it's only when you directly compare it to another player that you realize it's a bit flat. We loaded up the same track on an iPod, let the two play and swapped the headphones back and forth. The Galaxy Player initially sounds okay, but when you switch over to the iPod, you can suddenly hear the mid and high frequencies poking through, and bass sounds feel more, well, bassy. There are EQ controls, which might help you tweak the sound to your taste, but it's far from ideal. If anything, we were more inclined to just jack all the sliders up to milk a little more volume out of it.
We also tried another music app -- Jet Audio, from Cowon -- for playing back tracks to see how it compared to Samsung's stock application. The result? Well, more of the same really. You get a little more control over the sound, and even a little workaround for the volume issue, but it's a kludge, rather than a fix. As for those front-facing speakers? They'll suffice for providing sound on the occasions you want to share a video with someone next to you etc, but for prolonged amounts of time, they're just going to annoy.
Camera
It's only fitting that something that can play media should be able to create it too. The pair of cameras on the device will allow you to do just that. The VGA camera up front is really only there –- we hope at least –- for any applications, like Skype, that might necessitate it. You're never going to get anything more than an okay picture out of it, at best. And, to be fair, Samsung likely wouldn't claim any different. As for the main camera? Well, at two megapixels, we weren't holding out for anything sensational either. And it seems we were right. First of all, the camera is slow –- an issue we experienced in the Galaxy Player 4.0 before it. Secondly, the camera struggles in anything other than the optimum conditions. Photos on a cloudy day? Forget it. Trying to shoot a moving target? Good luck. In short, forget about the camera, unless you really need to grab a shot of something and this is your only option.
Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 sample shots
27 Photos
The same goes for video. It's good for grabbing those candid moments, where quality isn't an issue, but it's unlikely that the results will find their way beyond the device itself, for watching later. It's fair to say that the addition of cameras here is merely to round out the spec sheet. In fact, the 2-megapixel camera is technically a downgrade from the Galaxy Player 4.0, which has a slightly less feeble 3.2 megapixels to play with.
Software
Gingerbread, Gingerbread, Gingerbread. Repeat that word over and over in your mind. If you do it for long enough, the word might start to lose the sense of disappointment that somehow lingers around it. Okay, so it's hidden under TouchWiz 4.0. and isn't all that bad in and of itself. But by now you'd hope that Android 4.0 might be finding its way to this product line out of the box. Otherwise, the main differentiator between this device and its siblings is largely the display size. Everything we threw at it ran fine, games were responsive enough, and Google Maps, for example, was perfectly functional. Still, as you flick around the screens, you get the sense that while it's not lagging, it's not far off.
The software that comes bundled with the player is a bit of a mix. There's a stash of games included, which the product landing page on Samsung's global site is very keen to show off. There are also some Samsung utilities, such as the Music and Video apps which take center stage (inasmuch as they're on the home screen). There's not a lot to talk about here other than they do what's asked of them without getting in the way. If you have a Samsung TV, then there is an app that lets you use it as a remote control, which is cool in a sort of novelty way. It works well, but unless you've lost your remote, or want to annoy your partner, you likely won't be needing it much. There's also the AllShare app, which lets you stream the media on the device to a compatible TV easily. This works well, and is a quick and easy solution, especially if you're not generally familiar with DLNA.
As we're dealing with Android here, you can obviously enjoy a whole world of different apps from the Play store, and this is likely what will really help you set the Galaxy Player 4.2 up just how you want it. It's worth noting that if you are running Windows, you can use the Emodio software to manage and sync your media library, but you're out of luck if you are using Mac OS X. In this case, you will have to either use another solution like DoubleTwist or, of course, plug it in and manually drag media over in mass storage mode.
Wrap-up
By now, you have probably gathered that while there isn't much wrong with the Galaxy Player 4.2, we feel Samsung could have tried harder. As we've noted throughout this review, 100 percent of the functionality of this device is available in any recent smartphone. Therefore, for this device to shine, it really should smack its core features. It doesn't. If the music player had been exceptional, or the screen wonderfully crisp, then we could see how this might stand alone as a media player. But Samsung chose not to do any of those things, and instead turned out something that sadly feels like the spare parts left over from various phones. Given that the 8GB model stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the iPod touch price-wise (the latter being older, granted), you'd have thought there would be a few features to swing any decision in its favor. As it happens, it really comes down to whether you prefer Android, want GPS, and the option to expand the memory.
Unlike dedicated music players, even those offering basic video playback, the Galaxy Player has two thorns in its side. Firstly, smartphones will make this a superfluous purchase for most, and secondly, there's the competition. Not only from Apple, but companies like Cowon, who have the advantage of specializing in this area. But perhaps the most frustrating thing of all is that it's not even terrible. It does everything just fine –- certainly for a mainstream user –- and that's almost worse than if it was just plain bad. Enough time and effort went into making it perform to this level. If only Samsung could have tweaked something, or thrown in a killer feature, then it could have a corner of the market to call its own. As it stands, however, it'll blend in with its Galaxy Player colleagues, doing very well at not offending you. We suggested earlier that this device was heir to Samsung's PMP throne, but the truth is the market has become more of a democratic republic than a monarchy.
