Nocturne street scene (Walter Linsley Meegan, 1859 - 1944)
Near Blairville Wood, south of Arras - 14 April 1916. During an artillery exchange between German forces and the 55th (West Lancashire) Division, a high-explosive shell burst on British trenches.
this came to me in a vision
listening to fleetwood mac is like. i don’t know this song but let’s give it a shot. oh wait i do know this song. i’ve heard it a million times and always liked it, i just didn’t know the name. on some level i kind of assumed that song was just an ambient part of the world the way the sound of the wind or birdsong in the trees was but apparently it’s by fleetwood mac. neat.

Talbert: my crush on winters isn't obvious!
average Talbert letter:
“Dear “War” Brother,
I received your letter, and I can’t tell how much it meant to me. I should have written you but I would much rather talk to you."
“Well I will cut this off for now. You are the best friend I ever had and I only wish, we could have been on a different basis. You were my ideal, and motor in combat. The little Major we both know summed you up in two words “the most brave & courageous soldier he ever knew.”
“And you were the only person I could talk to. If I had only taken that furlough with you I would still be with you.”
“Polly” you mentioned she had nothing to do with it. I didn’t even call her in New York. She once told me that she knew if I had my choice of her or you I would take you. She was right.”
“Well you know now why I would follow you into hell. When I was with you I knew everything was absolutely under control.”
A devoted soldier and Buddy, Tab
P.S. Hurry home, tell Col. Chase the war is over. Ha!
you can find the whole letter right here btw!

Major Dick Winters’ Sykes Fairbairn fighting knife.
This knife was a gift from Lt. Lewis Nixon who was Winters’ close friend. The inscription is “L.N.” (Lewis Nixon) to “D.W.” (Dick Winters) “November 1943”. This knife is referenced in Winters’ war time letters and was taken by an unknown person at some point and the inscription was unsuccessfully partially removed with a file. Major Winters and Easy Company arrived in England in September 1943 and trained with British Soldiers and Commandos who sported the British Sykes Fairbairn knife. These knives became a “luxury item” and were very coveted by the U.S. soldiers who had them.
