Pokemon Aqua 1 - Behind the Scene
I've debated doing a voiceover for the timelapse video, but I don't have a fancy mic lying around, ahah.
As this illustration is the first of a series of roleplays, it shows a lot of relevant characters, each with their own unique storyline. It was fun to work on!
The client wrote me an 18 pages summary of the events, it was genuinely fun to read and try and guess what would happen next. Reading the summary of the roleplay was very useful to figure out how to represent each character, their role in the story, and how they interact with each other.
The client and I ended up having an online folder full of references, either old drawings from the other players or illustrations from the Pokémon franchise.
I then used PureRef to categorize everything, that way I had an easy way to reference each character and location while working on the specifics.
At the beginning of our conversations, I also gathered some different examples of what type of style he was looking for, and we figured out something in the likes of a book cover or movie poster. I then sent him different examples and progressed from there.
After that, I started making thumbnails
I did not have the summary yet by this point, so I was basically just exploring different compositions based on the info I had.
But after I got to read the story, then I started really locking in
As we figured out a composition that we liked, I did more research and collected more references
(I really recommend PureRef btw)
And that's pretty much all! You can watch the timelapse on my YouTube.
As of now, I'm working on the second illustration of this series. It's a fun challenge!

Here's FINALLY the timelapse for the second illustration of the series!
I did actually start doing a voiceover for it, then decided against it at the end :0
You can catch me stream on twitch too!
