âIn this scene, Catwoman wants to whip off the heads of four mannequins. And Michelleâs three months of training really paid off. She performed this difficult and potentially dangerous scene perfectly on the very first take.â
âThe trick about it is, it is traveling faster than the speed of sound. So, thereâs a certain hazard to it because it can cut skin, it can break bones. She is doing things with the whip that will make Indiana Jones green⌠that 90 percent of the people who do this for a profession canât do.â

Rule number one: file a flight plan and stick to it. Rule number two: donât go wandering off. You think itâs dark when you turn out the lights, well, down there itâs pitch black. You can get dehydration, disorientation, claustrophobia, panic attacks, paranoia, hallucinations, visual and aural deterioration.
THE DESCENT (2005) dir. Neil Marshall, cinematography by Sam McCurdy
âWe knew we wanted it to be beautiful and disturbing, often concurrently within the same shot. In the end, a lot of it was just from nature. We found images that were atmospherically relevant. One I remember was of a vapor trail behind an airplane, and in the sort of vortices, light was reflecting through the water droplets and creating rainbow shapes. That became relevant to how we created the look of The Shimmer. Another was a tree that was covered in thousands, hundreds of thousands of spider webs. The spider webs in the branches made the tree like a tree, but not a tree, and that sort of became the crystal trees at the end of the film. It was that kind of thing.â â Director Alex Garland on the inspiration behind The Shimmer in Annihilation (2018)
