Cambridge Latin Book 3. Beware of spoilers to the beautiful story.
Are you a Caecilius person or a Salvius person? Are you an Ovid person or a Catullus person? Are you a Caesar person or an Augustus person?
hello appblr world!! I recently graduated high school (c/o 2015), and I will be attending Duke University in the fall, hoping to pursue a double major in English and Political Science with a minor in either Psychology or Neuroscience :â)Â
applying to colleges was one of the most stressful experiences of my life, so I really want to help out anyone who is now currently feeling those tidal waves of anxiety and panic. my intention is to help and hopefully alleviate any nerves about applying to college (in America)
the summer before my senior year, every time I read the word âcollegeâ, my heart rate spiked & I started internally freaking out. for me, the whole process was super overwhelming, and my distaste for the education system (specifically, the american education system) quadrupled. I remember feeling incredibly confused and alone because I didnât know where to start, so here is a lil guide thingy!!!Â
THE SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR:Â
make sure and finish all your summer assignments â I know that college applications are a strong focus, but get what youâre supposed to do out of the way first + you will feel less overwhelmed and more productive
start making a list of colleges that you want to apply for â my best suggestion is to categorize them into safety schools, match schools, and reach schools
ref: generally people look at a schoolâs admitted profile (on the school website) and compare stats, which means gpa, rank, test scores, etc. if you can, itâs also helpful to read into their supplementary essay prompts and examples to give you a general idea of what a college is looking for (ex. UChicago is notoriously known for their quirky supplementary essay prompts; famous past prompts include: Find X, Whereâs Waldo?, Why are you here?, Whatâs so odd about odd numbers?)Â
do lots of research on schools youâre interested in â ok now I know that reading these long paragraphs on school websites can get really tiring, so try watching some youtube videos or looking the school up on reddit, and be sure to talk to current students to get a first-hand account
look at location, diversity, the programs offered in relation to what youâre interested in, size, public vs private institutions, sports, social scene, political affiliations, financial aid offered, study abroad, etc)
try and figure out a general field of what youâre interested in â you do NOT need to know what you want to major in, but when youâre applying for colleges, you will most likely need to select an intended major; if not, you will apply as undeclared, which has its advantages and disadvantages!! but even with an intended major, most colleges donât make you officially select a major until sophomore, sometimes even junior year, so it is okay to not know what you wanna do when youâre 16/17/18!!! but explore and reflect and try and figure out a general field of what youâre interested in. do NOT use your grades as a sole factor in deciding; if you are good at math and have really high grades, that does not necessarily mean that you should be a math major - pursue your passions!! if you know that you like writing and reading, then consider a major in english or literature. if you think youâd like to work with computer software, then consider a major in computer science or computer engineering. ALSO know that there are so many potential majors + even the option to create your own at some universities!! and also know that many people change majors, and that is totally ok :)Â
in august, common app will open, which is what many colleges use for the application process. certain schools will have specific websites themselves (i.e. MIT, University of California schools, etc) â if you make an account BEFORE august, it will be deleted by then, so be careful!! now, when you make ur account, you can add schools and you can look at their supplements and stuff. be sure and note deadlines!!Â
DURING SENIOR YEAR:Â
keep up with your school work â senioritis is REAL AND ALIVE, my friends. you will think itâs really bad first semester, but then it just explodes into a frenzy of apathy and indifference second semester + you basically donât care about anything; this is normal, but still try and focus. colleges can rescind their acceptances, altho itâs not likely unless you suddenly fail everything, but overall, itâs just important to still try
keep good relations with your teachers (both current teachers and past teachers) & decide on which to ask for a rec â for many schools, they will require at least one teacher recommendation, so you must decide between which teachers you wanna ask. I would advise picking the teachers youâve always had good relations with, and in a subject where youâre really passionate about learning the material. when asking, be respectful of deadlines (aka donât ask them to write you a rec two days before the deadline. they are people too), and be sure and say thank you. if you can, make them a card or make/buy them a little gift; I promise you, theyâll appreciate it!!Â
if the school youâre applying to requires multiple teacher recs: many people advise asking teachers of different subjects to emphasize your well-roundedness â you can do that or you can ask teachers of one subject that youâre really interested in; weigh your options and politely ask. asking teachers can be really scary sometimes, especially if youâre very shy, but theyâre there to help you and itâll all work out :)
write a common app essay (if applicable) â common app has 4 prompts that you can choose from, and then youâll submit that to all the colleges ur applying to thru common app. this is very important. if youâre not a good writer, do not fret!! most of the time, the subject of these essays are very personal. a lot of people write about some trying time in their lives, but plenty of other people write creatively about something small, but important. remember that essays are a way for admission directors to get to know the real you :â) that sounds super cliche, but keep in mind that you are more than ur gpa and ur sat/act score. prove that to them by writing about something you care about
if you are ok with it (and itâs totally ok to not be ok with it), ask someone you trust to read over it and edit it. a lot of people ask their language arts teachers just bc theyâll help with grammar and structure, but asking other trusted adults and peers will be helpful too!! keep in mind the potential of bias from parents + friends thoughÂ
you will most likely write your common app essay multiple times. you will have lots of drafts & it can be really stressful, but patience. you will be so happy when you finally finishÂ
finalize your college list and start writing supplementary essays â many colleges will have supplementary parts to the application on top of common app. this can range from totally separate essays to lil short-answer questions, so be prepared and give yourself plenty of time to write!! just as with your common app essay, getting feedback can be super helpful
also remember that many colleges accept arts supplements (this range depends on the college, but Iâve seen colleges accept writing, dance, music, visual art, etc) & these fall under a different deadline, usually. if you want to submit in an art supplement, you may have to submit in your essays and everything earlierÂ
OH ALSO some colleges will have an early decision or early application deadline â this is basically an earlier deadline for ur app in exchange for an earlier decision. be careful on the difference between EA and ED!!! ED is BINDING, which means that if you get in, you have to go (you can get out of it for financial reasons tho), and EA is NONBINDING, which means that even if you get in, you can decide to go to another school
submit in your transcript and any test scores you need â different schools have different policies, but most fall under either the SAT + SAT 2 scores OR ACT + writing scores; I would suggest contacting the counseling office asap, but be super nice!! counselors are there to help you through this process, but it can be really overwhelming for them too
pay close attention to whether or not ur college requires a counseling rec or not
double check everything for small details â some colleges accept peer recs, but sometimes they donât publicize that detail very much so just be observant! same with priority deadlines for interviews; you may have to submit in your app earlier if you want priority for an interview
accept ur interview opportunities â meet with an alumni or go on campus if you can and give an interview!! theyâre really helpful sometimes bc it provides the school with a look into who you are as a person, not just as a student. also, from my experience, the alumni are super nice and really interested + itâs nice to just talk and nerd out about the school you like :â)Â
submit ur apps (hehehe of course!)Â
apply for scholarships â this is something that I wish I had taken more seriously, but really, college is expensive and scholarships can make all the difference. talk to your counselors if you donât know where to start & literally just google for them!! be careful you are eligible for the ones youâre interested in and make sure you submit everything in by the deadline tooÂ
AFTER SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATIONS:
distract yourself like crazy â the wait is horrible and the anticipation is killer, if youâre anything like me at least. hang out with your friends and just enjoy your senior year!! this is the last of high school & i promise you that as much as you may hate it (if you do hate it), you will feel bittersweet by the end of the year. so make memories and make the best out of the time you have left in high schoolÂ
check your email â colleges oftentimes send you emails if they need you to send them anything more, or theyâll update you about things. theyâll usually also email you with where you need to go to check your decision
donât let the senioritis take over ur soulÂ
RECEIVING YOUR DECISIONS:Â
acceptances â YAY CONGRATULATIONS!!! be proud of yourself and know that you deserve it 100000%, wholeheartedly. they did not make a mistake, and you ARE that amazing. celebrate your accomplishment, but also be humble. itâs likely that you have a friend that either got waitlisted or denied, so be careful what you sayÂ
rejections â iâm sorry, my dear!! but you are not meant to be at that school, and that is okay. even if it is your dream school. this does not reflect ur self-worth & this def does not mean that you arenât good enough. this simply means you arenât a good fit for the school!! most people have to deal with rejections, so take some time for yourself. eat some comfort food and watch some tv. read a book if that relaxes you. take a bath with lots of bubbles. do whatever is necessary to cleanse yourself of any negative thoughts you may have, and then realize that you can accomplish SO much wherever you end up!! UR A BRILLIANT SHINING STAR & I HAVE FAITH IN YOU :â)
waitlisted â being waitlisted (or deferred during EA/ED, which basically pushed you back to the regular decision time) sucks so much bc you just want to know; take a deep breath and consider all your options. make backup plans. if youâre really interested in the school, email them and tell them that!! make sure if you want to be on the waitlist, that you notify them of that (usually via mail or online somehow). if you donât wanna be on the waitlist, make sure you take yourself off so you give everyone else a better chance :)Â
weigh your options through careful, careful consideration â there are so many factors that may come into play when finally deciding on which college to go to
money is usually a huge factor, and sometimes you wonât be able to go to a great school even though you got in bc itâs too expensive. but do not be sad about this. give yourself time to feel sad, but donât let it dictate your life!! you need to stay logical and rational. think long-term. sit down with your guardians and discuss the option of taking out loans and so forth. if youâre planning on pursuing grad school afterwards, you need to keep that in the picture as wellÂ
talk to current-students and compare important things â if youâre really big on community service, ask the current students at different schools how it is there. this applies for everything!! first-hand accounts are incredibly helpful. you can also consider emailing professors of departments youâre interested in for a more professional and academic perspectiveÂ
look into their programs and try and avoid putting too much emphasis on rankings - be specific and read up on the department that youâre interested and compare them with different schools. donât blindly let an overall ranking mislead you!! (i.e. Duke is ranked higher overall than Georgia Tech, but Georgia Tech is ranked MUCH higher in many of its engineering programs)Â
talk to people â talk to your parents. talk to your counselors, your teachers, your peers. basically everyone is talking about college your senior year, so take advantage of it. talk with other people and get second, third, fourth, fifth opinions. expand your mind and consider everything!!Â
senior year is this giant conglomeration of sweat and tears and happiness and anger and jealous and confusion, so do not worry if you are feeling overwhelmed!! it is normal, and i promise that everyone has felt scared about the future at some point. but with that, be confident in yourself. youâre absolutely lovely + you will go far in life!!Â
ok 1) I apologize for how absurdly long this post is and 2) I am here to help if ANYONE has ANY questions about anything!! literally I would love giving advice, so feel free to msg me anytime (my main account is @naiveety though, so whichever works)Â ALSO if anyone is interested in Duke, please please please come to me & I will help!!!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE APPLYING TO COLLEGE & MAY YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT FUTURE :â)Â
oh. is there a word for what it feels like, watching someone you loved dearly, even if only as a friend, watching them just⊠go. like not pack their bags, not leave in a huff, just slowly drift off with their more exciting people, forgetting to speak to you, forgetting your birthday, forgetting they said they loved you too. is there a word for the way the beetles come live in your bones during that. how you feel stuck, stuck like the universe is expanding just to get away from you, like this massively important person never saw anything important in you
I honestly think that we would eliminate one of the major causes of ableism if we stopped basing peopleâs worth off how much revenue they generate.
This measure is worthless. Actually, it is worth less than nothing.
I used to be a programmer for a spammer. Being rather young, naive, and also desperate for some kind of income, I had no idea what âlead generationâ meant and had no idea that the fact that they didnât talk about how their nebulous product actually helped anyone was a huge red flag. I took the job, slowly learned the codebase, and it took me months to figure out what kind of practices this place actually employed.
I was asked to put in obnoxious popups, but hide the popups for traffic coming in from Google so that Google wouldnât cut off their sponsored traffic because the site violated their standards, a few months into my time there. That was when I began to realize the kind of place I was working at. Then I was asked to create a throwaway email account to test something, and I found out what actually happened to the poor people who put their information in for Free Insurance Quotes. They were inundated with spam. I found out the company had no site of its own, just hundreds of these âFree Insurance Quotesâ sites all with slightly different stock photos and slightly different forms and a âcomplaintsâ page that was very hard to find with an email that was never checked.
I was a Hardworking Taxpaying American when I worked at that job. I was, according to this capitalist logic, contributing to society and of much more value than a disabled person who supposedly is a leech on society.
I was making the world worse by working at that job. I would have been making the world better if I did absolutely nothing but stare at the wall all day rather than work that job.
Many jobs are like this. Anyone who works at an oil company is making the world worse. Anyone who works at a tobacco company is making the world worse. People in various abusive therapy industries are making the world worse. Iâm sure you can name plenty of other jobs in this category. The world would be better if those jobs did not exist.
Now, I am disabled. I am chronically ill, and I cannot even work a sedentary job because having to sit up for eight hours at a time would make me have to lie in bed for days.
I am making the world much better now by replacing the invasive grasses on my front lawn with strawberries that attract native bees, by sealing my house to increase its energy efficiency, by taking care of a flock of chickens and doing my best to ensure that they have a good happy life, by replenishing the soil in the yard with compost and chicken manure, than I was at that job. And I donât do very much - I canât.
Equating the arbitrary numbers one accumulates for oneself to oneâs actual value or contribution is a dangerous lie, and it is poisoning the planet.
This is so incredibly important. Thank you for this.
Super cool website alert
lingvo.info is a cool, free website all about European languages & linguistics in general.
There are four main sections to the website:
Lingvopedia for basic information about the 28 languages in Europe they focus on, like alphabet, history, phonetics, basic grammar, fun tongue twisters and sayings, etc.
Babylon for info on linguistic in general (as a prototumblinguist with barely any formal studies on linguistics, Iâm eating this up)
Lingvopolis, which is like a searchable tumblr masterpost for language learning resources on the web
Geolingvo, which is a game you can play with some tumblr nerds all about langs and geography
There is also a section to download language lesson plans for teaching a couple languages!
I saw one of the people who develops this website at the Polyglot Gethering, and their team is working hard on it! Itâs super, super cool, and I wish we could have a clone site for all the languages.
Itâs also multilingual, so you can change the site language from English to 21 other languages.
When 80% of your college list is reach schools
hi everyone! after writing a ton of âwhy usâ essays last year during app season, i thought iâd share some tips to make tackling such a broad question a little easier. these tips can work for basically any variation of âwhy would you like to attend our institution?â, but if you have any questions/concerns feel free to drop by my inbox!
â
reminders
-most of the time this essay is going to be supplemental and not the primary piece of writing the school is going to look at, so donât sweat it! this is not something worth stressing over and you can get it done in an hour easily if you know the school really well.
-this essay wonât kill your shots of getting in if itâs not a masterpiece, but it can make a difference and increase your chances of acceptance if you write it well. this is especially true in more selective schools and if youâre among the average applicant grade wise.
â
general tips:
-keep it short and sweet! seriously admissions will read so many of these plus each applicantâs personal essay so you need to be concise while still making them believe you really want to go to their school. you want to say more with less.
-like i know commonapp usually gives you 500 words max for supplemental writing, but trust me you do not need that much. i kept all of my âwhy usâ essays around 250 words and got into each school. admissions wonât want to read too much more than that. they can tell when youâre pulling stuff out of your ass and this is not the place to overcompensate for not so stellar grades or a lack of extracurricular activities.
-above all, make them believe they are your first choice!
-italics for emphasis because i canât stress that enough like you really need to sound as though youâre 100% invested in the school youâre applying to even if you arenât.
-while youâre writing a âwhy usâ essay, keep your writing from straying too far into âwhy usâ or âwhy youâ territory. with the first you will be repeating what admissions already knows about their own school and with the second there isnât a lot you can say that wasnât in your application already that will make admissions think âooo we need themâ without sounding like youâre bragging.
-a good way to avoid either is to keep the focus of the essay about how the school will help you attain your professional, academic, and personal goals. in other words, try to bring points you make back to the school. this is where they want to hear what made you apply to specifically their school and how you are going to fit in their student body.Â
-so donât just say âyou guys have a newspaper and thatâs cool and i want to join it!âor âyou guys have an accredited business program and thatâs cool and i want to learn!â, because so many other schools have newspapers and accreditation. be as specific as possible and mention things unique to that school and how you come in to that. did their newspaper win a bunch of awards from the ACP plus you were editor-in-chief of your high school newspaper and would love to bring your expertise to the team? do they have a realistic stock simulation program they use in classes and alternative spring breaks to wall street for business majors? those are the specifics you should be mentioning in your essay.
-that being said, this is really where you should name drop people/clubs/etc.! do their clubs or programs have specific names? mention those instead of just âharry potter clubâ or âa political groupâ. met a teacher that made a great impression on you during a campus tour? mention them and what really makes you want to take their class. is the school adding programs or do they have any undergoing projects on campus? mention the ones that interest you by name.
-ex. one of the schools i applied to was expanding their science/math building so i wrote something along the lines of âmy passion and dedication for STEM fields would be perfectly matched with the universityâs, shown by the amount of effort being put forth in the augmentation of the ____ science center.â
-donât forget to make this essay personal to you. do you really think this school will help you reach your full potential, both as a student and as a person? tell them yes and tell them how. whether it be through one-on-one teaching methods because of small class sizes or 250+ clubs leading to a thriving social life, they want to hear that you truly believe attending their school will make you an overall better person/scholar/athlete/musician/etc.
-however, you can make the essay personal without using emotional language. this is not a creative writing assignment, so you should cut out the fluff. keep it formal and donât use poetic/descriptive language or phrases like âfrom the moment i stepped on the cobbled sidewalk on the commons i knewâŠâ or âever since i was a young girl, iâve just have a feeling about _____â or âi can just see myself here walking past the founderâs statue on a warm day on my way to classâŠâ because this gives no insight whatsoever as to why you choose the school or how youâre qualified to be accepted.Â
-go on the schoolâs website, read their about section, and really try to understand the what the school hopes to accomplish for their students. do they aim to be an exciting/welcoming/diverse/affirming/close-knit/etc. school or any combination of those? understand their values and foundations before writing your essay so you have a sense of direction. note: this is not me telling you to word vomit their mission statement because youâll sound like an absolute fool and its also plagiarizing (aka the last thing you want to do in an admissions essay).Â
-DO NOT under any circumstances write about: school size, location, reputation, weather, or ranking. admissions knows these things and they donât want to you to tell them about it.
-please please triple check everything in the essay is about the right school! the worst would be to mix up mascots or programs like i canât even imagine would admissions would think.

Advice/FYIâs to High School Seniors
My main pieces of advice for all those students starting their senior year of high school this fall. Of course, these wonât all apply to everyone, but take what you want from it. Hereâs some advice from someone who just graduated.Â
By the time you get to senior year you either have 3 close friends. or youâll be friends with everyone. Either way, cherish them all.Â
Do not slack off. If you do, at least wait until the second semester.Â
Take easy classes. Unless you donât mind lower grades in hard classes due to senioritis then I suggest you keep your senior schedule pretty simple.Â
Take off periods. You will LOVE them. You will be surprised with how much longer your days feel.
Definitely start driving to school, or carpooling with someone who does.Â
Go to the football games. Even if your team sucks. Theyâre just good experiences.
Actually, go to as many school events as possible. Senior year was my first time going to volleyball games, or the dance shows. This is your last chance to experience them.
You do not need to go off campus for lunch everyday. You do not want to earn your freshmen fifteen as a senior.
Your senior year group of friends will be the group of friends that you wish youâd had all throughout high school.
You will meet new people, and become friends and wish that you met them sooner. Because some of them will be juniors and you probably wonât see them for a very long time.Â
Start applying to colleges as early as you can. Preferably once you start senior year, or the summer before.Â
If you havenât already taken your SAT/ACT you definitely need to get started on that your first semester.Â
Go to prom if you can. It wonât be the BEST night of your life, but itâs a good one.Â
Start thinking about what you want to major in. This is definitely subject to change, but youâre going to want to know a couple options once you start applying to colleges.
Once you do accept your offer for a college, and it becomes definite, high school becomes so much harder to get through because you just want to leave.Â
Youâre going to be waiting for graduation THE WHOLE YEAR.Â
If youâre in a relationship and are going your separate ways after graduating now would be a good time to either end it, or figure out ways to be long distance.
Long distance very rarely works.Â
At prom, it is a very good idea to invest in some comfortable shoes.
Take lots of pictures.
Go on college visits to as many colleges as you can.
Save your absences for the last weeks of school because thatâs when you are REALLY not going to want to go.Â
Be one good terms with some of your teachers, because youâre going to want letters of recommendation.Â
If you want to take pictures with your friends after graduation, be ready to pick a place to meet up beforehand because it will be very hard to find them afterwards.
Do your homework. Please.Â
Stop talking to the people that you realize youâre only nice to because you have classes with them.Â
Now is just not a good time to develop a crush.Â
AP tests are suddenly very hard to study for considering that youâve been taking it easy all year.
Your SAT score does not define you and getting a bad one is not the end of the world.
However, do as well as you can because colleges often give assured scholarships to students who meet certain SAT/ACT scores.Â
Your GPA is either going to drop, or raise A LOT.Â
GPA doesnât really matter at this point though. Junior year grades matter the most.Â
Spend a lot of time with your family. Youâll be off to college before you know it.
High school parties are honestly overhyped.Â
Now would be a good time to acquire a taste for coffee.Â
If you oversleep, I honestly recommend just staying home that day unless you have a test.Â
T-shirts will become your clothing of choice.Â
If you love makeup, like me, by the last 2 months of school you just wonât have the energy to wake up 20 minutes earlier to apply it. So learn to be okay with how you look without makeup.Â
Please eat breakfast.Â
No one cares if you eat in the cafeteria.Â
The freshman look SO tiny and it makes you wonder if you looked that small 3 years ago.Â
Go to all the pep rallies.Â
Have fun during spirit week. Some colleges donât have them, so take advantage of it now.
It is totally okay to not have a date for prom.
One of the happiest moments you will have all year is being able to walk across the stage. Also, one of the shortest.
Despite what everyone says, there is a very good chance that you WONâT cry at graduation.Â
The senior year teachers are always the best.
Be nice to the freshman.
Be nice to any underclassmen actually.
But also, take pride in being a senior. This is your last year. Own it.Â

Below is a list of verbs that are considered weak (imply summary) and a list of verbs that are considered strong (imply analysis). Strive to use the stronger verbs in your essays to help push yourself away from summary and toward analysis: ex âThe writer flattersâŠâ NOT âThe writer saysâŠâ

the student athletes netÂ
what is it? a place for student athletes in the studyblr community to connect with one another, find other studyblrs in the same sport, and share tips on dealing with sports and school.Â
what will happen? when you join, you will have the option to be put in a discord group chat or a google hangouts. there will be one for everyone in the network, and one for each sport. there will also be a tag for everyone to follow, and if necessary, other forms of group messaging will be implemented so everyone can be heard.
requirements? do not have to be a studyblr / must be currently in the sport / follow @studentathletesnet / optional: follow admin @studytune
how to join? must reblog this post (likes donât count) and fill out the form here. then wait to be contacted via messages by aelynn from studytune.Â
about the admin: hi! im aelynn! i run the blog studytune here on tumblr. i am a competitive swimmer and cross country runner. most people probably donât know how important sports are to me, and i wanted to celebrate the people who care a lot about both school and sports like me by creating this network! please shoot me an ask if you have any questions!
I walked to a deli and got a sandwich to go and a coffee and while I was waiting these two teenage girls ran up and were like OH MY GOD JESSICA HOW ARE YOU and then hugged me and the one whispered âthat guy was following you and taking pictures of youâ and then they walked home with me and that one guy stopped following me and hONESTLY THIS IS WHAT I AM HERE FOR
Y'all I was at the river just hanging with my friend and these two high school girls run up to us and say âCan you pretend to be our friends? Cause this guy has been following us,â and we sat with them and they called their parents to pick them up and I really want to share that story cause itâs SO SMART and when youâre in crisis your mind can just blank in panic so I want everyone to have that story in the back of their heads. NEVER be afraid to ask strangers for protection!
Once in like ninth grade, I was at Starbucks by myself doing homework and this weirdo came and sat at my table and was telling me how he was a photographer and how he was âscoutingâ for models and he really liked my âlookâ and he was trying to ask my name and how old I was and I was panicking bc I didnât know what to do Then this middle aged woman came up to us and was like âEMILY there you are sweetie I was looking for you itâs time to go home!â and the guy left really awkwardly and then she told me that she had a daughter my age and asked if I told him my name and I said no and she told me to be safe Keep an eye out. Protect each other
why do men have to be so goddamn creepy like shit dude
FOREVER REBLOG
in college, i was omw to class one morning and came across a girl sitting by herself in one of the hallways, and a guy standing in front of her blatantly hitting on her. she was giving clear signs she didnât want this to be happening but couldnât extricate herselfâturning her head away, giving really brief answers, trying to keep reading the book in her lap, etc. iâve been there, itâs scary AF especially if youâre alone.
she didnât say anything to me as i approached, but she did look me dead in the eye. so i stopped, sat down next to her, and did the âOH MY GOSH I HAVENâT SEEN YOU IN SO LONG, HOW ARE YOU??â routine. she instantly played along, and we started having an exuberant âold friends catching upâ conversation. the guy kept trying to catch her attention again but eventually gave up and left in a huff.
THEN she thanked me and told me iâd guessed right, she was really fucking uncomfortable but didnât want to piss him off.
if your gut tells you someoneâs in trouble, it never hurts to stop and check it out. im a Fellow Girl so i donât think that girl would have seen me as a threatâif iâd been wrong and sheâd been fine, she would have brushed ME off or said she didnât know me or something. but she didnât.
two other times in my life iâve been the first person running toward someone in obvious trouble, and it was only after i moved that other people came over to help too. just. check on people, for heavenâs sake. be aware of the bystander effect and resist it. âsomeone elseâ wonât always come along; often you have to be the Someone.
Question: if a boy sees something like this going on, is trying to help going to make things worse? I would hate to let something like this slide without helping but at the same time I wouldnât want to make her even more uncomfortable by involving myself.
I feel like instead of pretending you know her, maybe go up and flat-out ask âhey, is everything okay? You look a little uncomfortable/is he bothering you?â
Okay. Iâll bear that in mind, thank you x
