The Thames Barrier at Silvertown, London
Whilst industrial things sit more happily on LondonEdge, to my mind, the Thames Barrier is a work of engineering beauty and so it can sit here on Sometimes London. It is hard to believe it was actually designed back in the 1970s. It became operational in 1982 and has been put into action over 200 times since then saving London from flooding which would have caused horrendous hardship and countless billions of pounds worth of damage.
