Baelor and Dunk sometimes roleplay role-reversal AUs. Dunk was a little shy about it at first, but there's something about Baelor on his knees, loyal and devoted as Dunk is every day, something about being looked after and treated as precious that gets to him. And for Baelor...he spends his life commanding people, holding the whole realm together. An evening of quiet service at the feet of someone he absolutely trusts is- more healing than he knew it could be.

I think Baelor gets off on taking care of Duncan--like, being Hand and later King is just a series of never ending problem solving and while Baelor does enjoy the problem solving aspect, he doesn't get to reap the rewards of his work the same he gets to do with Duncan. Getting Dunk access to the best trainers and all the food anyone could need or want show up in just how much bigger and stronger Dunk gets at the Keep. Baelor is ordering private feasts for him and his sworn sword WITHOUT UTENSILS thank you very much. In the morning, sheets are getting stained, Dunk is covered in bite marks and Baelor has regained the vigor to out argue all of his Small Counsel.

ooooh I love thinking about how, in the event Baelor lives, Maekar is lowkey isolated by the court/Westeros for this dogged perception that he wanted to be a kinslayer. Even those who want to think well of him have to admit that he must love his son more than he does his brother/crown and that’s not good lord behavior and so my man is in Trouble. Dunk, now Baelor’s sword sword, stays being kind to him though and I think Maekar develops a crush on the man that’s all but raising his son. Idk, what do you think? Thanks for letting me ramble!

Dunk would be popular. Horribly, unbelievably popular. Even if not everyone likes him at court- most love a good story. And the honorable hedge knight who fought against the cruel prince Aerion (a monster even to the other nobles) at the side of Prince Baelor Breakspear!? Now that is most certainly a tale fit to entertain. The smallfolk adore him and everyone else sees him as a fun distraction. Especially once he get's some proper armour and training which cause him to finally grow into his own skill. Combine that with his size and sheer devotion as well as his gentle nature? That's the material songs are made out of.
Meanwhile Maekar is just depressed. He was forced to send Aerion to Lys still and now also has to fight against accusals of attempted kinslaying. Add onto that the fact that without his brother's death to overshadow it, he's now known for choosing to go against a man the gods themselves declared inoccent for no other reason than him having out his beast of a child in his place??? If Dunk is made into a story he will also need a villain. And Maekar is gearing up to play that part wonderfully well.
Perhaps that is why it is so shocking that Dunk defends him most, right After Baelor and Egg ofcourse. Steadfast in his reminder of Maekar's great deeds for the realm. Honest when he asks how anyone could expect a father to not fight for his child. The knight is kind and honest and merciful and soft and pure and that all extends to Maekar too. So much so that maybe, just maybe, he can understand why his brother chose to stand behind him over his own blood.
Just so you know I have read all of your switch au and love it so so much. I would love to read more of your thoughts about now completely down for Duncan Baelor is. And now Duncan can have more family apart from Arlan (and the one he lost) and Baelor cannot handle Duncan with kids, he is giving Baelor baby fever but he already has two kids??

To be honest, the whole thing is just an excuse for me to play around both with the power and character dynamics of the cast. Don't get me wrong- what canon gave us is peak of course. But I like the idea of Dunk instead being being 'The True Knight' taking the role of 'The True Prince'. Not to mention that I want him to be pampered too.
Baelor on the other hand has his canon event of seeing Dunk be his honorable, kind self before just falling head over heels. I cannot emphasize enough just how aware the man is of his social station still. Just because he didn't get the top notch education he had in canon doesn't mean that Baelor's any less smart for it. He knows that this isn't how princes normally behave. He knows that his family and himself should be but pebbles on the side of the road. And he knows that Dunk is getting absolutely nothing out of this when he takes them in regardless.
Prince Duncan is young and powerful and wealthy and priviledged and has what seems to be the whole world at his fingertips, yet he still chooses Baelor. Chooses Egg has his squire and the people of Westeros as his masters and the company of simple folk in the absence of titles. He's genuine and kind and real despite having grown up in the viper pit that is court. When he knelt as a knight to swear to protect the innocent and young he meant it the same way he'll mean it when he's going to swear to protect the realm at his coronation. As such it is only really natural that Baelor replies with the same kind of devotion, right?
Honestly, going into all of this the one character trait I tried giving Prince!Dunk is the fact that he's just cripplingly lonely in his position. He lost most of his family and is locked into being Arlan's heir mostly against his will. His marriage with Rafe, despite them only loving eachother as sibling, is relativley happy but still oftentimes seperated by distance. He has Raymun and later on Lyonel but even they still need to look after their own lands. It's why Dunk has his habit of picking up strays tbh, it's really just a desprate bid for companionship.
When he meets Egg and later on his family Dunk simply jumps at the oppertunity tbh. He adores his squire and he quickly grows to adore and look up to Baelor too. Despite Valarr being his age they get on great and Dunk always wanted younger sibling. Matarys, Egg, Rhae and Daella are all getting an education not too disimilar from that of a prince or princess. In case of the girls Dunk even admitted to being willing to ensure them a dowry and good marriages, though he would prefer to make them future ladies-in-waiting for Rafe so they are kept close. Egg is Dunk's squire of course while Matarys can be the squire to his brother Valarr. Gentle and kind as their prince is, it is of little suprise that the children take to him like fish to water. Which in turn make Baelor mourn the fact that two men are physically incapable of giving his two sons any more siblings.
It's very much found family fluff most of the time tbh.

But to make a long story short: Dunk and Baelor are such idiots that Rafe, Dunk's wife in this AU, and Egg decide to team up and lock them in a closet and refuse to let them out until they get it over with. The marriage between her and Dunk is very much purely political in nature and they both agreed that it's find for either to take a lover. If Rafe should ever fall pregnant by her's Dunk would claim the babe is his and if he ever sired a bastard Rafe would raise them as her own. Otherwise they see eachother as siblings and best friends. So there are no hard feelings at all when Dunk hooks up with Baelor.
Funnily enough the two have a very functional and happy marriage that way lmao. Baelor feels bad for a while for being a „homewrecker“ and seducing a married man though. Rafe is quick to soothe him though. She enjoys watching him train with Dunk while gossiping with her lady-in-waiting Tanselle and little Egg. Almost as much as she enjoys teasing Dunk about his virgin behaviour.
Switch AU! Does Baelor join the Kingsgaurd? Or does Dunk decide that his sworn sword is best traveling the lands and dealing out justice where he cannot?
The unfortunate thing about the Kingsguard is that it always consists of seven knights who can only be swapped out either by death or by resignation, with the added baggage that they can't really father any children. So not only would Dunk have to wait a good long while for a spot on the Kingsguard to open up in the first place- the fact that Baelor has two TRUEBORN acknowledged sons may also not make his appointment look the best.
That being said Baelor is NOT going around travelling the Seven Kingdoms anymore. No sir. That man is Dunk's sworn sword and he is staying alongside him at court where Valarr and Matarys can get trained (either as a knight or some other job they'd like to take) alongside the rest of his family and Egg (who remains as Dunk's squire).
It's giving rich millionaire and his sugar baby; only the sugar baby is the significantly older half of the relationship. Baelor is being dressed up in fine armour and clothes while being fed three very healthy meals a day, spending most of his time tagging along with Dunk or hanging with the rest of his household. Maekar and his nephews are also there of course. And as if all of that wasn't reason enough to get Baelor all flustered and in love, then the fact that Dunk is also really kind to Matarys and Valarr just seal the deal even more. Said it once and I will say it again but Prince Duncan of House Pennytree is like. A Disney Prince Charmingâ„¢.
Seven save Baelor's soul; he lets the young servants play around his feet and in the halls while just smiling down at them.
Now I'm wondering about the switch AU. Who makes the forst move? Because Baelor knows he cant go around just kissing a Prince- it wouldn't be proper, no matter how badly he wants to. And Dunk is all chivalry and doing the right thing and he can't just go kissing anyone, no mattwr how badly he wants to, if there's not 100% certainty that they want it and has he actually been getting those signs from Baelor?
I got two asks that are very similar, so I shall answer them together.
And as sad as it sounds, the first one to make a move between the both of them....are actually Rafe and Egg working together. Yep. You heard me right.
Rafe. And. Egg.
Listen. They know how this sounds. They know they're not supposed to be meddling in the business of their husband/brother figure. But none of you has seen the things they had to witness.
Dunk and Baelor both are the exact same kind of total idiot and both refuse to say shit about their feelings. Baelor because Dunk is the prince and technically married (even though everyone knows that he and Rafe are purely platonic and this is a political match). Dunk because he's a big shy softie who, as you have said, doesn't want Baelor to feel pressured into anything. Which means that both of them spent the last few months painfully obviously just wanting to get down and do the deed and yet somehow still dancing around the subject like a bunch of virgin girls.
It's embarrassing, it's horrible, Maekar is literally about to jump out of a window and frankly said this is just getting ridiculous. The thing that gets them both to finally fess up and get their shit together consists of Rafe and Egg locking them in a storage closet for a few hours and refusing to let them out until they started talking about their feelings.
Whole thing ends with Baelor and Dunk both having a suspicious amount of bite marks and also finally being together. Yay! They can't court officially, but it's pretty obvious they're a thing now. Dunk and Baelor start taking long, long strolls in the gardens or spar more often. Sometimes Tanselle and Rafe decide to watch, when Egg's around he's either training with the men or gossiping with the ladies. Everything is very very harmonious and the realm thanks their most gracious and kind saviour, Princess Rafe and her trusty aide, Egg.
Funnily enough, the aforementioned uncomfortable sexual tension between them is also what clued everyone into Baelor being different from the other strays Dunk took in. Not that it made it any less painful.
does Prince Dunk dote on Baelor like crazy?
Of course he does. That's his baby boy Egg's uncle and one hell of a knight. The whole family is getting new armour, swords, clothes, a nice room to share and some food.
The rest of Dunk's entourage are laughing their asses off at this hedge knight fumbling around. They are well used to their prince's generosity by now as well as to his inclination of picking up strays (that's how most of them got here after all), so it's always so cute when a newbie comes in and doesn't know how to react. Just look at him! All blushy and red when the prince offers him some sweets. Dawww. Look whose got another crush! He can join their "We-Want-Prince-Duncan-BADLY" support group together with like 30% of the staff, he'll make friends quicker that way too!
For your reserve AU! is there a trial of seven? Without the pressures of the crown, does Aerion still turn out so deeply fucked? Does Dunk ride to Baelor's rescue?
Aerion is considerably less cruel at least. Even if it's just because he knows that if fucks up too badly, he doesn't have the protection of his status and family behind him to save him. Dude's still an asshole no doubt, but a manageable one. Not straight up insane and abusive, more just a little mean.
The trial of Seven still happens, though. Baelor kicks it off- this time he was the one to defend a poor servant girl from another knight mistreating her. The knight- son to a high-ranking noble, it turns out- freaks out of course and demands the hedge knight's head. Dunk gets wind of the matter and prepares to just straight up tell the Lord off ala "The fuck you mean punishment? You hurt an innocent girl, be happy I'm not punishing YOU for THAT". But before he can get into it all Baelor's already demanded a trial by combat, to which the knight (thinking himself a smartass after reading some books) responds by making it a trial of seven.
You can't really take back a trial by combat, so Baelor's unfortunately locked in. Maekar, Valarr, Daeron and Aerion all volunteer to fight for their uncle of course. Aemon's not a knight and the other kids are all far too young, unfortunately. Which means that with Baelor they would be five. They're about to give up or to try and seek out some form of help from literally anyone else when suddenly, out of nowhere, Dunk walks up to them with Raymun and Lyonel like it's nothing and noting how it seems like they've got one man too many. It's good he didn't need to ask any of his guards to get involved that way, though.
Baelor is of course shocked about the fact that the crown prince just seems to naturally assume that he'll be fighting for him. Like. Dunk didn't even make a grand entrance after a speech Baelor makes at the start of the tourney, mind you. This all happens right after they've been told it's happening. Just walks up with some of his buddies like its complete natural for the crown prince to fight on the side of a hedge knight and then jokes about bringing one man too many. Raymun ends up being the one sitting out since his wife's pregnant, and they reason that he shouldn't endanger himself needlessly. Meaning that the Baelor's lineup now consists of Maekar, Daeron, Aerion, Valarr, Lyonel, Dunk and himself.
Any attempts to ask what the prince is thinking and why he's decided to join them are met with a gentle smile and a comforting hand on the shoulder of whoever asked. "As a knight- even if I am only such in title- I have sworn to defend the innocent. As a prince and heir to the throne, I have sworn to protect my people. It's basically a double duty of mine to stand with you, Ser. Especially after you've become my sword."
Funnily enough, we still get an "I am your man" scene where Dunk starts to kneel. Only this time it is aimed at the smallfolk watching with the prince essencially just. Reinforcing that he is on their side first and foremost. It's not him he's kneeling infront of but Baelor still thinks about that scene at night.
Prince Dunk is soooo eager to hear Ser Baelor’s stories and admire how far he’s traveled
HE SO IS.
Prince Dunk was always enamoured with the ideals of knighthood. He'd love to be one himself if he didn't need to be his granduncle's heir. So when he meets this well-travelled and chivalrous hedge knight who's lived through countless conflicts and tale? You best believe Baelor's getting questioned until the sun comes up.
Both of them are sitting in Dunk's solar with one or two cups of wine. Baelor's still trying to work out his new life and the sudden luxury he enjoys, meanwhile the prince looks at him and asks in a kind voice:
Won't you tell me another story, Ser? Won't you tell me about your travels to the North? Won't you tell me of Dorne? Won't you explain again how you defeated your foes at Redgrass? Won't you tell me of the tourneys you partook in? Won't you tell me of your youth?
Won't you share your life with me, Ser? Please?
So for the Switch AU are the Targaryens still magic? Are they hedge knights for the same ways Witchers are tolerated, their magic useful for a large dangerous deed but stay to long in one place a trouble will follow and start again? Equal parts wanted for their power but hated for the trouble that will happen?
Kinda? I mean, they certainly no longer got dragons and didn't have them for a LONG time. But Daeron still dreams sometimes and they still have their signature hair (Valyrian genes are strong man.)
Most people have already long since forgotten about the old House of the Dragon anyway by this point. Some say it's exaggerated history; others claim it to be mere fairytales altogether. Barely anyone even knows the story, regardless of whether or not they believe it to be true. Not even Baelor or Maekar know about their heritage, much less their children. As far as they know, their family has just been kind of strange but otherwise completely normal and incredibly unimportant.
Their main issue is less magic and inheritance politics and more so feeding everyone and keeping everyone alive tbh. Daeron still drinks, though a little less due to a lack of ample coin and time, but that mostly is it. Recently he's had an odd one, though. A great black dragon joining with a tree, as though nature itself was swallowing it. Gentle, covering it with a blanket of green while his young played with the plants. He wondered what that one meant, but then Egg went missing and they had to worry about that first....
In the switch AU? What’s up with Arlan and Dunk? Were the pennytree in charge a long time or is it a more recent takeover? Did the Targaryens still have dragons originally or are they just not a factor here?
Dragons used to be a thing and the Targaryens used to rule like. AGES AGO. Think at least 500 years, basically ancient history (ignore how this fucks with the lore plz). I imagine the dragons have died much sooner in this than in canon and thus the Targs got overthrown ages ago, with the Pennytrees in charge since. Baelor, Maekar and their kids would be one of the last few descendants the dynasty still has around. But they are so divorced from the past and there's just so much that happened that no one truly remembers much anymore. Functionally, they are just a family of poor Hedge Knights and dragons are a fairytale you tell children to get them to behave.
Though I like to think that if they ever do find out that they are, in fact, the last living descendants of some royal family Dunk just sees it as a cool fun fact. He never really subscribed to the whole highborn vs lowborn/smallfolk thing anyway, so their whole ancestry changing doesn't really matter to him in how he treats them. Though he will 100% use it as an excuse to get the court off his back a little with how he's "too close to some peasants". Hell may even use it as an excuse to convince Arlan into giving them some land and a noble title after they've proven themselves in his service.

As mentioned in a previous post, I also switched around other characters and their roles. Meaning that while the Fossoways are not the big guys in the Storm Lands, the Baratheons are a minor house from the Reach. Which does not make Lyonel any less gay, by the way.
I like to think he's still friends with Dunk, actually. Instead of meeting in the Baratheon pavilion while Dunk seeks out supper there, I feel like they may meet during that one tug-of-war game. Dunk's got a nasty habit of sneaking out to interact with the smallfolk in less fancy garb; Lyonel sees him and mistakes him for a lord of similar standing, asks him to "heed my call of war", slaps his ass and gets the shock of his LIFE when he finds out that that was the heir to the throne like two seconds after. Bro's prepared to get punished for the disrespect when really all Dunk wants is to tell him that that was funny af, man. We should so try out sparring omg. You entered the lists yet? Yes? Great! Imma request you omg. Also, just call me Dunk.
Raymun would be one of Dunk's close confidants and perhaps a childhood friend, together with his wife, Lady Rowan. Lyonel gets inducted into the most insane friend group ever and just fits right in off the bat. Like yes your honour, he is right up Dunk's alley and also just as whipped for this pretty prince telling him he doesn't care about the whole standing and rank bs. They're dancing it out in the castle and also Egg has a new uncle. Found family on crack. Dunk's collected another one. Someone tell Arlan to forbid his heir from expanding his harem further, the Small Council is worried that he way just end up romancing the whole country if this keeps going.

What makes him really fall in love with Baelor once they meet? Does Maekar make fun of Baelor for so flustering in front of his celebrity crush?
Nope, Dunk's the trueborn son of King Arlan's late nephew. So he's 100% legitimate and thus has a very, very solid claim on the throne.
As for how he became an orphan...it's a bloody story, I fear. The Blackfyre rebellions still took place in this AU. Not as a bastard Targaryen claiming the throne, but instead as a bastard Pennytree doing so. Arlan spent much of his youth dealing with them alongside his own children and their children. It was a horrible massacre both for the royal family and the common people that ravaged the lands.
It was a quiet night when it happened, really. Beautiful too. Mild in nature, with a clear sky and silent nature all around. Dunk had been barely one and ten at the time. He used to have a large family back still despite being the only child of his parents, with many cousins and aunts and uncles. No one truly expected him to ever sit upon the throne, being the king's grandnephew, and so he enjoyed many freedoms. He was training to be a knight, actually! A Kingsguard had been made his Ser a few years ago and the boy was actually dreaming of joining them himself one day. After the war was over and he could return to Kingslanding. King Arlan had brought most of the women and young children of his family to a faraway residence during the happenings of the rebellions in hopes of keeping them safe that way. Certainly not a dumb idea in and off itself....
.....but it did not save anyone. Not after the Blackfyres had gotten notice of where the king kept his family and sent their agents to take them out. It was a horrible bloodbath. Assassins snuck in under the cover of an attack, by the time anyone noticed what happened almost every member of the king's family, alongside Dunk's Ser had been killed. He himself only having survived in the nick of time due to his mother's quick wits, telling her son to hide.
Dunk was the only survivor and the only possible heir of King Arlan after it all was over. Some say the old man never fully recovered. The young prince was quickly taken into his Ser and thrown into the classes he'd need to prepare himself for his future role. Constantly guarded and watched over closely to make sure not a single bit of ill would befall him. The boy was never quite the same after, either.
The gods allowed him to live in place of the rest of his family. Dunk thought that must mean something, right? Surely he must make the sacrifise worth it. To honour the parents and cousins and aunts and uncles he'd lost. What right does he have otherwise to stand where they lay buried?
So he devotes himself to his people. It's a coping mechanism tbh. And in turn ends up making a reputation for himself both as a "soft-hearted fool not fit for the throne"..... as well as being a freaking messiah figure for the small folk. Seriously, Dunk is POPULAR with the people. If he was the champion of the people in canon, he's their god now. The smallfolk adore him. Ser Duncan the Tall, Prince Duncan of House Pennytree, The Good Prince, The Kind Prince, the Prince everyone cannot wait to begin his rule. He's known for taking in smallfolk into his service, for defending the innocent, for always remaining humble and kind and open. You best believe that this man is running at least one or two orphanages and hospitals for the people. Whenever there is a royal procession with him in it it takes ages 'cause Dunk takes the time to actually talk and interact with people. The lords hate his guts but also know that they CANNOT afford to mess with Dunk or house Pennytree by virtue of their popularity, a fact that, funnily enough, also strengthens Arlan despite his heir lowkey antagonising a good chunk of highborn officials.
It's kinda similar to Egg's rule. The Lords do not like his reforms a bit but won't rebell openly yet, partially because they know that their smallfolk will betray their asses as soon as Egg/Dunk ask them to.
The reason for why Dunk falls for Baelor is the same it is in canon btw. He sees an honourable knight who holds to his vows and oaths and his mouth starts watering.
Oooh how does Baelor react to Prince Dunk being so affectionate and sweet with Egg?
He reacts to it by not knowing how to react to it, lmao. Just. Immideate shot down error 404 systems overloaded please restart your device type stuff.
For all of Dunk's humility and devotion, you still gotta remember that this is the literal heir to the throne taking in and looking after a low-born random kid still. Egg has no powerful bloodline or even special talent that would warrant a sponsorship in this; he just ran into Dunk and managed to endear himself to the prince via his sob story. And now he's literally become his squire and is being treated as his younger brother/son.
The kid went from sleeping out in the open and eating salted beef to a down bed and three exquisite meals a day. Dunk dresses him up in his house colours and has him train with the sword with him, allows him to ride one of his own horses or even has him ride on his own with him at times. Egg is being taught how to read and how to behave at court while being told to follow his prince around. During the Ashford tourney, he's got the kid on his lap to watch (instead of carrying him on his shoulders like in canon) up on the stands or allows him to hide in his tunics. Everyone can see from a mile away how besotted the crown prince is with his new squire and it's both so sweet and strange to watch. Dunk has been hit HARD with baby fever I fear and he is using Egg to deal with it.
Which means that Baelor is also starting to get insane baby fever, but specifically for DUNK'S BABIES. Lowkey how are you. What are you...What's he supposed to think? Yes he's overjoyed for his nephew. Getting that level of attention and support from the crown means he's set up for life basically. Maekar's lowkey a little jealous over Dunk stealing his kid but also??? The prince is INCREDIBLY respectful. Openly says that he doesn't wanna replace the boy's father and personally sees him more as a younger brother. He's just as supportive and kind to them and especially to Matarys when he meets him too. So Baelor is just fumbling around not knowing how to react to this fairytale of a prince and trying not to embarrass himself. He never thought he'd come to find love again after Jena died, and yet here we are.
Hell, this may even be where we get Dunk's "I am but a prince born to serve my people" line. Baelor, tentative and not yet sure about what to make of the situation, gathers his courage and just. Asks the prince why. Why take us in? Why look after the boy? He's not any less sharp and talented as he is canon; he knows that this isn't normal behaviour for nobles. No lord- no matter how minor in their status- has ever bothered to demean themselves in such a way. To treat a simple peasant boy and his family so well despite all the scrutiny they face for the situation. In the same way that Prince Baelor is very, very aware of class difference (as shown when he said that "but I am a prince line" in response to Dunk asking whether or not he'd also struck Aerion for hurting an innocent girl) Hedge Knight Baelor is the same. He understands the inherent difference between the highborn and lowborn, which this prince just seems not to care about.
So he does just that. Requests an audience (he can request audiences with the prince?) and hesitantly asks him if he is sure about taking his nephew in.
