Noelle was surprised by the text, but she knew what he meant. “New outfits, huh?” She sent a quick text back.
Noelle: Can do, John. I’ll get them changed into clean clothes shortly. You coming in for work tomorrow?
Before she could get a response back, she started towards the room that the assassins were in. She had a job to do, after all.
John quickly messaged back as the men worked on a story together.
John: I might not be able to. Something came up. Please give the patients my sincerest apologies.

Eli managed to cut his hands free as he did his best to assess what was going on around him. It was difficult, but he managed to realize that these mice were being led by the rat that was chewing through his unconscious mother’s binds. Eli was sure he was going crazy, so ‘why not?’ he figured. He slowly got up to about his full height again, talking to the rat. “Y'know I thought that the ones to come help first would be the police, but it seems they’re turning a blind eye or something. Thank you.” His vision was starting to go black, but he wasn’t done. He may not be able to walk, but hell if he wasn’t going to make a run for it. He gripped the sickle in his hands, pulling it in front of him and charging at the guards, swinging the blade at anything and everything he could.
Until, that was, there was another loud gunshot. This time from the top of the stairs. Eli cried out and fell to his knees, then rolled onto the ground so that neither of them were touching anything. Both of his knees were bleeding, one slowing down while the other had just started. Eli tried to stay awake, but it was no use as Jace growled at the guards. “We’ve been found. Quit dancing around and let’s move. Leave the girl. We’ll find another way.” Without any further explanation, he left. There was the sound of a vehicle starting up, then going off into the distance.
Henry-rat had just bitten through the mother’s ropes when he heard Eli speak. He had to give the kid credit, Eli was being brave. But if Henry could speak, he would say, “Kid, no! You’re gonna get yourself killed!”
Once the thugs began to scramble back upstairs, Henry had the mice lessen up their attack until the last mouse scurried away. He could finally breathe in relief, glad that Jace didn’t kill anyone. At least, for now. Hazel was okay… sort of. And Eli… well, he’ll live.
Outside, a police car turned the corner down the street and drew closer to the house just as Jace made his way outside.
The guards were stumbling up out the door, unable to go much faster until it was too late. The cops were there. "Shit, what do we do? Boss will kill us if we get caught."
"Then we don't get caught, easy!"
"And how do we do that?"
None of the three of them had an answer to that. Best thing they could do was hide, but they knew they would be found. Then the next best thing...none of them would go through with it. It was futile to even think about it because they wouldn't consider it. So they went with the first plan: hide.

The henchmen essentially start to dance as the mice bite and claw them, now more upset with the sight of mice. They didn’t notice the sound of the sickle falling down the stairs, too focused on getting the rodents away from their vulnerable skin.
Eli noticed the blade first, scooting as close as he could to it. He realized he started seeing two. That’s not right. No way would there be two when he had only seen one fall. He grit his teeth, not realizing he was biting through his tongue until he tasted something metallic. He managed to get his hand on it and slid it behind him as he went to lean against the wall. It was all he could really do at the moment. His vision was blurred from the pain and he definitely was not going to be walking anytime soon.
Back at the police station, the phone rang.
Crap! Crap! Crap! Henry’s panicked thinking filled his head as he scrambled down the rest of the stairs. He didn’t see where the blade landed, and now had to improvise again! He went over to Hazel and began to bite down on her binds. His rat teeth weren’t as sharp as the blade, but they’d have to do, for now. Once Hazel had been freed, he went over to the next person. He was hoping the rest of the hostages wouldn’t notice him in all the chaos.
Back at the station, an operator answered the phone. Since it was an automated call, the operator assigned the nearest police unit to investigate the address. With the location in question, this new information was relayed to the people investigating Hazel’s whereabouts. An extra police car had been sent out, just in case.

Does this fanfiction make sense? Hold water? Not an ounce! Does that mean I’m going to stop writing it? Not an ounce! I’m a moron with a keyboard and half an idea and that’s your problem now. God couldn’t stop me and neither could my dad, and now I’m on your screen with another thousand words of whatever the fuck this is. Bon appetite bitch!

Eli was the first to notice the rat and slowly backed away from the body. He heard a shot ring out and felt a hole tear through his pants, just missing his leg. He froze as the one who shot spoke. “You move any farther than that and I won’t miss next time.” Eli tried to stay still, but fell on his butt, shaking like a leaf. Another gunshot, pointed at his knee. He shrieked, blood rushing through his veins and terror overtaking him. The two guards just laughed as the third threw Hazel onto the ground, not caring as she hit the ground head first, making a loud thud.
Mizaki appeared, leaning against the house as the second gunshot rung out, humming a tune to himself. Jace noticed the blue haired god immediately. “Y'know, despite being friends with the Goddess of luck, you bring a lot of misfortune.”
Mizaki scoffed at that. “Well, luck is on my side, not yours.” Mizaki pointed directly above him. “This is just an example of that.”
Jace followed his finger and brought his gun out, shooting at the security camera above Mizaki, showering him with broken glass and sparks. Within seconds, there were three faint beeps. “You didn’t…”
“Oh, I did nothing, I just pointed it out. Everything else was you. I’d wish you luck, but she doesn’t deal with you.” With that, Mizaki started down the road, continuing his humming.
Henry-rat jerked away from the sudden noise as his sensitive ears throbbed. This wasn’t what he planned! He had expected everyone to freak out at the sight of a rat. Time to improvise. While the gun men laughed, Henry commanded the mice to make their move. They ran up to the remaining men and went up their pants, their claws dug into their exposed skin as they began to nip their legs.
Henry-rat scampered up the stairs during the chaos. He couldn’t do anything for poor Eli, but maybe he could do something for Hazel in the others. With the help of his magic sight, Henry managed to find the sickle blade he saw earlier. If he could get this back to the basement, he might just be able to cut the others free.
As Henry-rat pushed on the outer curve of the blade, he heard yet another shot ring out from outside. Had Jace shot some random bystander? He had to hurry! He slid the blade across the floor as fast as he could. Before he knew it, he was upon the top stair landing. He couldn’t stop himself in time as his momentum carried him and the blade down. The rat stumbled down three steps before he could stop himself. The blade itself kept going, its curved shape allowing it to roll and bounce down each step, gaining speed until it flew out into the basement, landing on-

Eli’s hands were shaking. Badly. “Untie my family or I’ll shoot!” His voice wavered too much. They must see through the bluff. If they somehow didn’t, they had to be blind.
One of the three other men raised his gun and promptly shot, barely even aiming. The man Eli was keeping captive lost all tension in his body as Eli was sprayed with blood. Eli went numb, vision blurring as he tried to think. What should he do? He couldn’t let Hazel see him like this, let alone his family.
Eli heard footsteps behind him, making him wince and turn quickly to see the owner. He fell to his knees at the sight. He was too late. Hazel was thrown over the man’s shoulder, blood dripping from her hair as her head lolled back and forth with the man’s steps. Eli felt his grip on the gun loosen in his disbelief. He felt cool metal press against his ribcage from behind, his eyes widening in fear. “Please, please, let me go,” his voice was barely a whisper, “That was what you said. Once she’s captured we’re free, right?” The man holding him at gunpoint chuckled, not answering him.
Henry followed the sound of the voices. He directed the rat to go through the walls, following the vibrations and scent of people. He peeked out through a hole previously made by his rat host. He was in time to see Eli’s hostage get shot. And Hazel… Oh, by the gods! What had they done to her?! Was this to be the start of the bloodbath Mizaki had foretold? He had to do something, before Jace came down to check on his captives…
At seeing the blood, an idea formed. Rats were known scavengers, taking every opportunity for an easy meal. He recruited a few mice that were nearby in the walls. Once their noses peeked from the holes nearby, Henry directed his host to climb onto the body and attack the head, near the poor boy’s face. To all appearances, a savage rat had come out of the woodworks to devour a fresh carcass. And it was a sizeable rat, almost as big as a cat!
Eli was the first to notice the rat and slowly backed away from the body. He heard a shot ring out and felt a hole tear through his pants, just missing his leg. He froze as the one who shot spoke. “This is Eli, a friend of hers from down the street.” Jace stood up and started walking towards the door, needing a bit of fresh air as he waited for medical assistance. They were taking a while.
There was a thump and scream from downstairs as well as a gunshot. Jace didn’t waste any time to hang up the phone before tossing it on the ground and shooting it For good measure. “You’re not gonna track me.” He growled under his breath.
Eli managed to get out of his restraints and used one of the few people keeping guard as a shield for the bullet, grabbing the gun in the injured guards hands and putting it up against the man’s head. “Nobody move! I’ll shoot!” He was shaking. He wouldn’t shoot. He was terrified.
Henry-cat bolted to the bushes nearby when he heard someone coming out. So, Jace really was here… He had to find Hazel, make sure she’s alright-
The gunshots from inside caused panic to rise in Henry. Jace’s gunshot wasn’t easy on the ears, either, making Henry wince. Henry-cat made his way through the bushes to the back of the house. He wasn’t sure how he was going to maneuver a cat inside a house. What if they were behind closed doors? Not wanting to risk the cat any further, he thanked and released it, and drifted and found a rat nearby.
“Hello? Hello!” Back at the station, Mark hung up the phone and muttered a curse. “It wasn’t the girl,” he told his superior beside him. “Please tell me you got a tracker on the phone?” The other officer in charge of that shook their head.
Henry-rat peeked his head out of one of the holes, in hopes of getting some sort of glimpse as to what was going on inside.

Jace internally growled. Of course it was the police. He kept his voice unwavering as he spoke. “No, Hazel isn’t able to answer her phone right now, she’s in the shower.” Of course that was a lie, but it gave him something to build on.
“Is that so?” The officer responded. “Okay, then. We’re calling to make sure she’s okay. And who is this I’m talking to?”
Henry-cat made his way down. He needed to find out where Haze was, and if she was okay. He could sense that someone in the house was unconscious… He made his way to another window. He didn’t want to risk getting caught indoors, for both the cat and his own sake. He wasn’t sure what other things Jace could be capable of. While passing by the front door, Henry caught a glimpse of the sickle blade. He focused the cat’s ears into the doorway to listen for anything the people were saying.

Hazel could tell her phone was ringing in her pocket, but Jace got to it first. He flipped it open as Hazel’s world slowly faded to black.
Jace looked at the collar id. It wasn’t any of her contacts, but he supposed it couldn’t hurt to see who was calling the girl. He swiped to answer. “Hello, Hazel isn’t able to come to the phone right now. Can I help you?” He made his voice sound more like someone around Hazel’s age, just in case.
“Hi, this is Officer Mark from the police. Is this Hazel,” The officer asked. Henry drifted over to the house. He knew most people couldn’t see him, not even Haze could. But he wasn’t sure if Jace was the exception. He asked a cat nearby to be his host, and the cat accepted. The cat then made it’s way over to a tree to get a better vantage point into the house. Henry didn’t like what he saw or heard. He could already see the broken glass scattered in a few places, and Hazel’s scent was strong, too.
Jace internally growled. Of course it was the police. He kept his voice unwavering as he spoke. "No, Hazel isn't able to answer her phone right now, she's in the shower." Of course that was a lie, but it gave him something to build on.

Hazel stayed latched on his arm, tasting copper liquid as Jace continued to punch her. He got up enough to slam her head into a wall with her still latched on. Once…twice…she felt a warm liquid running down the back of her neck, making her hair stick to her head, but she didn’t let go. A sob racked through her body and all the air in her lungs left her as she was slammed into the wall a third time, a knee going in her gut at the same time. She coughed, her jaw finally loosening around Jace’s arm. She coughed a few more times before she was kicked in the stomach, making her double over. The next cough produced some blood.
Dazed, Hazel fell onto her side, coughing and wheezing for air to get back in her lungs. Jace straightened his jacket and turned to the henchmen, looking at the shorter of the two first. “You, grab the girl.” To the taller, “Get the medic, you better pray I don’t catch anything from it.”
The two hurried to do what they were told as Jace glowered down at Hazel, sickle forgotten.
Both men were now in the lobby, having been released. At least for now. To make sure Hazel was alright, the police had contacted Hazel’s phone, then Dabria’s home phone. They couldn’t just take Henry’s and John’s words at face value. Especially since some of Henry’s colleagues didn’t trust him. Meanwhile, Henry and John had sat themselves in one of the available seats.
“What’ll we do now?” John kept his worried voice down to a whisper.
“…I don’t know,” Henry answered him. “I don’t know why, but somehow I know where she is, and it isn’t at Grandma’s… I’m gonna have to go and find out.”
“Okay. I’ll keep watch for you,” John promised. Henry leaned back in his seat, to all appearances looking like he dozed off. A moment later, his magic spirit drifted out of his body. As he flew out of the station, he noticed there was a string that connected from the station to somewhere far ahead of him. He soon realized it was the stick, and it was connected to a sickle the stick had been missing. Henry followed the string, and soon found himself in a quiet neighborhood. He could almost sense his grandmother nearby…but more important than that, was Hazel.
Hazel could tell her phone was ringing in her pocket, but Jace got to it first. He flipped it open as Hazel's world slowly faded to black.

Jace clicked his tongue and shook his head. “Such a shame. Surely you’ll cooperate?”
Hazel heard two people come up behind her and glanced over her shoulders to see two of his men with guns pointed at her. If she were to step out of line, she’d be shot before she could do anything. She lowered her head slightly to glare up at the man before him.
“What is this really about? I’ve done nothing to you. I don’t really even know you.” She raised her hands slowly as she spoke, putting her hands on her head.
Jace let out an appreciative hum and nodded to the men behind Hazel. With that cue, they pulled her arms behind her and handcuffed her. Jace reached in his pocket and pulled out a ring of keys. “The two who care for you…you know what they do, yes?”
“What about it?”
“Did they tell you about what they did before?”
Hazel didn’t respond. She’d had theories, but never decided to confirm for herself.
“They worked for me. When they left, they didn’t go peacefully. They killed many more than they have since. They killed ones they had grown close to as well as those they never bothered to know. They left me with nothing.”
Hazel swallowed thickly as she was forced down to her knees, gasping as she felt glass shards she hadn’t noticed before dig into her flesh.
“I plan to return the favor.” Jace knelt down and reached into her pocket.
The pocket with Dabria’s knife in it.
He started to pull it out of her pocket slowly, tauntingly.
“No!” Hazel screamed and bit his arm, clenching her teeth hard on the clothed limb until the blade fell from his hand.
Jace cried out from the pain and slapped her, but she didn’t let go. He punched, smacked, and kicked at her, the scuffle making the blade slide away across the floor. The two henchmen didn’t seem to know what to do, scared to shoot in fear of hitting their boss.
The sickle blade slid away as the two scuffled.
The two nephilin had spent the night in a holding cell. They managed to create a story that was close to the events going on. Hazel and her roommates had disappeared the night of the attack. There had been hunters that had chased some animals into the neighborhood, and Hazel’s house was caught in the crossfire. With one of them injured, they went to the only hospital they could think of: the one in the magic forest. Of course, they didn’t mention any ‘magic’ being involved.
“The hospital is out of town,” John had said.
“Out of our jurisdiction,” Henry added.
They explained that John had been treating Hazel’s caretakers. Hazel herself had been staying with them since the incident out of fear, and didn’t think to call the police. Hazel’s caretakers had been hospitalized earlier in the week due to being injured by stray bullets from a nearby gunfight.
Henry’s stomach growled as he laid on a bench across from John. He felt a buzz in the back pocket of his pants. He at first thought it was a text, only he recalled that their phones were taken away before they both went into the cell. He realized it was the stick his grandmother gave him, before he and John drove to the police station last night.
Henry sat up as he pulled the stick out, a confused frown etched his features. Why the hell would a stick vibrate? John had been slumped over on his bench, a hand in fist with his head down with worry. He looked up at Henry, then the stick. His brow relaxed at the realization before Henry did. They both shared a look and came to the same thought: Hazel…
A set of keys jingled and their cell finally opened.
Hazel stayed latched on his arm, tasting copper liquid as Jace continued to punch her. He got up enough to slam her head into a wall with her still latched on. Once she heard the horse rise again, she did as well, turning to where she had to go. She paused a moment, taking a deep breath, before starting to run. She had to get there as soon as she could. Hazel didn’t know what time it was exactly, but she didn’t have any more to lose.
She arrived to Eli’s house just in time to hear the grandfather clock chime the eleventh hour through the open door. She made it. The three motorcycles parked in the bushes told her that it would not just be her friends and Jace. She reached into her pocket and gripped the blade that Dabria had gifted her for reassurance as she stepped inside. “I’m here, Jace. Let them go.”
Jace turned the corner into the entrance hallway, a smug grin on his features. “That’s no way to greet someone doing you a favor.”
“Like hell this is a ‘favor’! Let Eli and his family go. I’m here, just like you asked.”
Dabria watched her go, before she herself left. Although, Dabria didn’t exactly leave. She simply slipped into another plane, invisible to all who didn’t know how to look for her. If things went alright, she wouldn’t have to harvest anyone today. She only hoped that her grandchildren were ready.
Jace clicked his tongue and shook his head. "Such a shame. Surely you'll cooperate?"

"What is this really about? I've done nothing to you. I don't really even know you." She raised her hands slowly as she spoke, putting her hands on her head.
Jace let out an appreciative hum and nodded to the men behind Hazel. With that cue, they pulled her arms behind her and handcuffed her. Jace reached in his pocket and pulled out a ring of keys. "The two who care for you...you know what they do, yes?"
"What about it?"
"Did they tell you about what they did before?"
Hazel didn't respond. She'd had theories, but never decided to confirm for herself.
"They worked for me. When they left, they didn't go peacefully. They killed many more than they have since. They killed ones they had grown close to as well as those they never bothered to know. They left me with nothing."
Hazel swallowed thickly as she was forced down to her knees, gasping as she felt glass shards she hadn't noticed before dig into her flesh.
"I plan to return the favor." Jace knelt down and reached into her pocket.
The pocket with Dabria's knife in it.
He started to pull it out of her pocket slowly, tauntingly.
"No!" Hazel screamed and bit his arm, clenching her teeth hard on the clothed limb until the blade fell from his hand.
Jace cried out from the pain and slapped her, but she didn't let go. He punched, smacked, and kicked at her, the scuffle making the blade slide away across the floor. The two henchmen didn't seem to know what to do, scared to shoot in fear of hitting their boss.

Hazel pursed her lips as she slipped off the horse as gracefully as she could, falling down to her knees as soon as she was off, bowing her head in the Death Goddess’ direction. “Thank you. However this goes, I hope to see you again soon.” One way or another, she was going to be able to thank her again. In death or in life, she did not know. She clutched the blade close to her chest as she bowed. “I will keep it as close as I can.”
Dabria bowed her head in return, a kind smile on her lips. Horsey raised himself to his hooves once more. The sun’s light cast a short shadow on the ground next to Hazel, making Dabria’s hair look as though she wore a hood. Off in the distance, in someone’s backyard, a dog made a long, mournful howl.
“Awoo woo woo woooooo….wooooo…woooooo….”
The dog howled a few more times, and the neighborhood grew quieter.
Once she heard the horse rise again, she did as well, turning to where she had to go. She paused a moment, taking a deep breath, before starting to run. She had to get there as soon as she could. Hazel didn't know what time it was exactly, but she didn't have any more to lose.
She arrived to Eli's house just in time to hear the grandfather clock chime the eleventh hour through the open door. She made it. The three motorcycles parked in the bushes told her that it would not just be her friends and Jace. She reached into her pocket and gripped the blade that Dabria had gifted her for reassurance as she stepped inside. "I'm here, Jace. Let them go."
Jace turned the corner into the entrance hallway, a smug grin on his features. "That's no way to greet someone doing you a favor."
"Like hell this is a 'favor'! Let Eli and his family go. I'm here, just like you asked."

Hazel looked over the cloak for a second before putting it over her shoulders. “Thank you.” She followed Dabria out the door, petting the horse’s mane before climbing on behind the woman.
By the time they arrived to Eli’s neighborhood, the sun was half-way to reaching it’s peak. The street was quiet, everyone having gone to their destinations to start their day. The only sounds were the heavy hooves clopping down the pavement, until even those stopped.
“We’re here,” the rider said. They were still several blocks away from where Hazel needed to go. “This is where you walk alone, now.” The horse lowered himself to allow Hazel to climb off. “But that doesn’t mean you’ll be lonely. Whatever happens…make sure you live. And keep the blade close to you.”
