By industry standards, I suppose I am a failed author. Since I started writing for young readers in 2000, only three of my thirty stories have been published traditionally. I turned to self-publishing as my only recourse, and now face the contempt of those who see self-publishing as a mere exercise in vanity.

Take a step back time, dear friends...
If the bill becomes law, librarians who work with YA literature, English teachers who teach “controversial” books could be subject to a class B misdemeanor charge and, if convicted, serve up to six months in jail.

No one wants their reading level staring them in the face every time they open a book. The answer is good reader- guidance practices. A struggling reader may select the longest and most difficult book in the library, because the student doesn’t want to be labeled a poor reader. Allow the student to take that book, but tell her that you know another book she would like, and send her home with both books. My bet is that she reads the book you suggested.

I try to do this with my students.
Why yes, I WAS looking up Founding Fathers to make my dumb comics!
Before you read this comic I want you to know that my favorite part of the tv show Sleepy Hollow is when Ichabod Crane has no idea what a tv or an iphone or a light switch is, and is confused. As hard hitting films such as Bill and Ted or perhaps Encino Man have taught us, historical figures out of place do not know who the Burger King really is. But do any of us really know who the Burger King really is? A question we must all ask. I’m just kidding about “before you read this,” of course you read the comic first. PS, have you seen 1776 The Musical? If you’ve been around here for two seconds, you know I have. Referenceeeesssss ho ho, yes gather ‘round my little nerds

Each year after ALA Midwinter is over and all the selection committees have released their lists, I like to compare the list from YALSA's Best Fiction for Young Adults and YALSA's Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers list. Usually there are several titles that appear on both.
This year, only three titles appeared on both lists:
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
How It Went Down by Kekla Magoon
Gabi, Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero
Congrats to these authors for writing stories with distinguished literary quality and appeal to teens!
"I’m not kidding, as a writer, it made me fury. I’m still really upset and angry."

I was in the fifth grade when I started to develop misophonia, and it quite quickly became the most difficult thing I’d ever experienced. I remember by first trigger very well. There was a boy who sat next to me in class named Chris and I despised him, he was always saying perverted things and...
And for many other reasons, too.
Here is Danny Hanbery taking the I Work at a Public Library Cast of Characters contest up a notch by acting out four different library stories in one video! Sit back, relax, and watch the beauty unfold.

EXAMINING MY FRIEND'S BOOKSHELVES

Love.
August just keeps looking better and better! Among the dizzyingly beautiful books we’re excited to bring to you in two months is best-selling cartoonist Lucy Knisley's newest book, a travelogue documenting her trip throughout Europe in the fall of 2011.
An Age of License follows Lucy as she navigates new countries, new experiences, and new romance, all rendered in an often-whimsical, sometimes stream-of-consciousness style that perfectly captures her moments of introspection between the memories she captures on the road. This part narration, part sketchbook format takes us right into Lucy’s thoughts and revelations.
Download the 22-page excerpt and, to continue following Lucy’s travels, pre-order your copy today!
Yay! Travel! Intrigue! Convention harassment! Embarrassingly earnest attempts at romance! Read it alllllll. Sooooon. And then another one after that! Yessssss, there are twoooo.
