“Vasilisa. She turns six in a few weeks.” The letters he often got came in a few pages. One was always written in his nieces hand writing, followed along with a picture. The next page would come from his sister-in-law who would write down whatever his niece wanted to say to him at the time. A very rare smile parted his lips when he pulled the pages from the envelope. The first page was a very crudely drawn, but colorful picture of a circus tent. “She really enjoys the fact that I work for a circus.” He said handing over the page for Evangeline to see. 

“Aww, she’s in the best kind of age. They always come up with the best stories at that age.” Evangeline truly loved children, of any age really, but then again, she loved every breathing living thing. She looked at the envelope as Niklaus opened it and her smile only grew bigger when she got to see the drawing NIklaus’ niece had sent him. It was easy to tell a child had drawn it but to Evangeline it looked really pretty. “She clearly has eye for colors. Who knows, maybe she’ll end up being an artist when she gets older.”

Seb smirked, although there was a slight pink tint to his cheeks. “Are you sure you’re fine? Perhaps a little too much German beer.” He shook his head. “Well, thank you, feeds my ego. Do stop by with compliments more often.”

Evangeline noticed the slight tone of pink and she knew she probably shouldn’t say a word but she had to tease him a bit about it because he tried so hard to to smile around her. “Are you blushing, dear?” she asked with slightly teasing tone. “And no, there can’t be too much German beer because I don’t drink. Can’t say the same about others though, some have been extremely excited by the cheap beer prices.”

Seb held the sour expression as long as he could before a small smile finally broke through. “Hey, hey, hold on.” He waved her back. “Meant to check in with you, before the circus resumes. Any aches and pains, fatigue, concerns of any kind to report?”

Evangeline noticed the tiny smile and her smile only turned into a lot brighter one on that same second. She turned back to face Sebastian as she continued smiling at him. “I think I’m doing all good. Especially now that you did bring that smile on your face. You do know a smile makes you look a lot more handsome? Not that you aren’t handsome as you are, but smile makes your face lit up and that’s wonderful.”

“Uh, yeah, no thanks. Not a festival kind of guy.”

“Oh don’t be like that, Sebastian. Smile a bit. For me, maybe?”

“A letter for me?” Niklaus dropped down from the bar he’d been using for pull ups to quickly move toward Evangeline. “This must be from my niece, she is the only one I know that refuses to use email to send me letters.” 

“I always love getting letters so in a way I’m jealous this was for you and not for me”, she said as she walked closer to hand over the letter. When she heard who the sender might be Evangeline’s smile turned even brighter. “Awww, that’s so sweet! How old is your niece?”

“Do you intend to just stand there and stare at me? Did you have something to say or can I continue on with my workout?

“Oh, I’m so sorry, dear, I just came by to bring you this”, she said and offered a letter to him, “Our new post boy brought your letter to me by an accident.”

Moment of sunshine || Evangeline&Charlie

Charlie wasn’t expecting to be stopped, so even after Evangeline placed a hand on his arm, he took one more step, having to turn around to look at her when he realised she had stopped. He was confused with the question, however, because he thought he was doing such a great job at concealing what he was thinking and feeling. Oh, because he knew nothing was alright, specially that morning, but he was usually left to deal with things by himself. Never had he told much about his personal life, and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to start now. “I’m… I’m fine, luv, yeah,” Charlie smiled, “jus’ had a lo’ t’drink las’ night,” he said, pinching the bridge of his nose, an awkward chuckle escaping him. “Y’know, nothin’ new.”

Evangeline watched Charlie’s face and it was clear she didn’t believe him. The worry was all over her face, the look in her eyes were worried and it was obvious she wasn’t going to pressure him to tell her anything, but not even Charlie could ignore of Evangeline worrying about him. She just watched at him, then sighed softly knowing he’d tell her if he wanted to. So Ev gave him a soft but slightly sad smile as she linked their arms and continued to walk towards her caravan. “Do you want breakfast? I can cook something for you.” Which was nothing new since Evangeline always cooked food for anyone who just happened to come by, but right now she felt she really would need to make Charlie’s day better and if cooking would help with that she would do her best to make him feel better.

Ian was surprised when she moved closer and linked their arms, really not used to that sort of proximity with anyone, and not expecting it; but it was Evangeline, and he let it be. He only hoped no one around saw and got the idea that doing that sort of thing on him would be alright (spoiler alert: it wouldn’t). “I just try and look after ‘em,” he said with a shrug. “Younger ones, especially. Grownups know how to look after themselves, though a few of ‘em could use looking after too.” He had one or two people in mind.

If you asked Evangeline, she didn’t care one bit if someone saw her walking hand in hand with someone. Everyone knew Evangeline was like the mother to everyone and mothers did stuff like that without a question. Plus touching was always important in any kind of relationship. “Time to time everyone needs help in their lives. No matter the age or their story. No one is meant to be alone and survive everything alone. We are here for each other, the circus is a family, we aren’t human if we won’t help each other out.” She smiled at Ian. “Some of us are the quiet helpers, some of us are the ones who are easier to see. In our case, I think you are one of the quiet ones while I am the one everyone knows is going to help without a question.”

She was a stubborn little thing, almost in denial of the fact that she was injured, but both Ian and Evangeline reassured her along the way, that she would be right as rain in no time. The quicker the injury was seen, the faster her recovery. Safely delivered to the medics’ tent, Ian lingered beside Evangeline for a while until they both exited together. “Thanks,” he offered, walking slower now in no particular direction. “You really do got a way with them.” 

Evangeline felt happy when they got Lily to the medical tent and they promised to take good care of her. “No, thank you”, Evangeline said and decided to link her arm with Ian’s as they walked to a random direction. “If you wouldn’t have came to get me who knows what could’ve happened. So it all is thanks to you.” She smiled at him warmly. “So you should be proud of yourself, Ian.”

Moment of sunshine || Evangeline&Charlie

Charlie followed Evangeline, hugging his tin of coffee as if he were hugging his own son– something very important. And well, considering how much coffee he drank a day, it didn’t make it any less real. He was still thinking, though, how could Evangeline or anyone really, do so much in the morning when he could barely make a cup of coffee without spilling it everywhere. “What? Sleep well?” Charlie repeated the question, just because he had been distracted, then shook his head and let out a sigh. “I did. Yeh. Like a goddamn baby,” he said with a little smile that soon vanished. Bad timing for baby jokes, he thought, for all he could think of was the photographs he had been watching in his caravan before Evangeline knocked.

Evangeline smiled at the reply, but when she looked at him the smile faded away and a worried look came to its place. She stopped and put her hand on Charlie’s arm to make him stop as well. “Is everything alright, darling?” It was clear something was bothering him and whenever Evangeline noted such thing she would make sure to ask what was going on and try her best to make the person feel better. No one should feel troubled, especially when Ev was around.

He half listened, half tuned out and watched their surroundings, but the bits Ian did catch, he committed to a kind of emotional memory. Though she was everyone’s friend, she was also like a mother figure to the younger acrobats and aerialists it seemed, and they liked her better than the medics (better than Ian, at any rate). Things got a little awkward as the tears came out, Ian never knowing what to do in these moments, so he went off a few paces nearby to help the tent crew out with a stubborn pole. He was back soon as not though, to catch the last fragments of their conversation and Evangeline’s gaze. “So,” he said, as if he’d come to his own decision in these moments. He tried to make his face soft, kind, harmless, so she would feel as little intimidated as possible. “You need help, Lily? I can carry you to the tent.”

Lily seemed to be a bit wary when Ian came closer, but Evangeline just smiled at her nodding her head a bit. Ian just wanted the best of everyone and Ev didn’t want anyone being hurt either, so Lily’s best option right now was to actually allow her and Ian help. After a moment Lily did allow Ian to help her out, though more like as a walking stick because as she said, she is not that injured she’d need to be carried. And to make things easier Evangeline decided to help out as well, so she stood on Lily’s left side leaving right side to Ian so they could help her together.

After tending to his tigers that morning, Icarus headed out the camp to explore Buñol with a companion he managed to drag along. “You think it’s a good idea to eat before La Tomatina?” he asked conversationally, crisp London accent smooth like honey. “I don’t want to barf after smelling a truckload of squished tomatoes.”

“But if we don’t eat now, dear, who knows when do we have the chance to do so.” Plus it really was time to eat and Evangeline always was one to make sure everyone did remember to eat, no matter what the reason would be that they couldn’t eat right now. Evangeline would always make sure they’d eat. “Plus if we eat now we actually might be able to watch everyone else getting tomatoed and we might not get thrown at at all.”

He couldn’t help but smile at her, a bigger smile than the previous one. “And yet, you’re so humble and beautiful,” Baxter stated, chuckling lightly. He’d flatter girls day and night, but with her, it was simple because she wasn’t cocky about it, at all. When he did it, he instantly saw satisfaction.`Dancing definitely wasn’t his forte and he knew he looked more foolish than a lot of other people that tried to dance like he did. “That makes sense. Someone taught me something called ‘The Sprinkler’ and ‘The Washing Machine’. I remember the sprinkler, but not the washing machine. Apparently they make me look like an idiot.”

Evangeline smiled brightly at Baxter and curtsied softly at his compliments. “Thank you, darling.” She listened his talk about the dance moves and a warm laughter left her lips. “I know those moves too, but they really are the oldies but goldies for sure. But if you don’t want to get extra looks you might want to try coming up with your own moves instead. You know music, you know rhythm, so just let it take you.”

Lily was, as Ian expected, still stubborn and hesitant to give up her injury. But seeing the woman she trained with daily, her face softened, and she was more forthcoming. Maybe it had to do with Ian himself being intimidating somehow. At either rate, he hung back in the distance, arms crossed, watching Evangeline and the kid. He couldn’t quite hear what they were saying, but it looked like she was going to be successful in persuading after all.

Evangeline smiled at the girl and then sat next to her starting to talk about just general things and eventually asking how she was doing and slyly prying was her leg okay and after a while Evangeline did get the answer she was looking for -- Lily’s ankle was acting up but she didn’t want anyone to know because she was scared she’d get thrown out of the circus if someone knew her leg wasn’t okay. Evangeline assured her no one would be throwing her out because accidents do happen and she needs to take care of herself so she can give 100% for the audience and for her team, because if she goes on stage injured she would endanger herself and the others on the stage at the same time. Lily was about to start to cry and Evangeline just hugged her with that warm motherly hug of hers. Once the hug was over Ev dried Lily’s tears as she smiled softly at her and convinced her once again to take care of herself and tell about the injury so she can get it treated right and be healthy again. She nodded and Evangeline looked at Ian to see had he heard all of it or did he want to come and ask about the situation himself.

“Wha’ the ‘ell? You’ve done all that. Before ten in the friggin’ morning?!” Charlie did nothing to hide his surprise. He was well aware people were more active than him in the mornings, but this was an exaggeration almost. “‘ave ye been up since five or somethin’?” He chuckled and shook his head. “Well, I’m sure yer place is way be’er than mine anyway, so we can always walk there. I’ll bring my coffee, and be back, a’ight?” Charlie offered and disappeared behind his door again, putting away everything that could get him fired (drug paraphernalia) and grabbed his can of coffee in one hand, his pack of cigarettes in the other one. He knew Evangeline wouldn’t really approve, but it wasn’t something he could live without. “Le’s go. After ye, mam.” 

“Oh, well, I woke up early and since we were here pretty early I decided to do as much as I could right away.” As in do more than any normal human being would, but well, Evangeline was a bit different anyway. “Of course, dear, although you could have coffee at my caravan too”, she said but Charlie had already went back in so Ev decided to pay attention to the morning sky. It seemed like it was going to be a bright and warm day, which was extremely nice thing. She looked at Charlie when he appeared again and smiled at him as she nodded. Evangeline started to walk towards her caravan -- luckily they always put them in similar spots so you couldn’t get lost at all. “Did you sleep well?”
