Here are the things that do fill me: a night sky, endless and rammed with stars. The soaring of a soundtrack over a triumphal point in a film trailer, something inside me stirring like an animal. What's your least favourite kind of costume piece to make?

“You think, as a teacher, I’d be excited that I won’t have to wake up early on a Monday because of summer break. But, guess who volunteered to work at a youth group summer writing program. Remind me to stock up on wine and hot cheetos this week.”

      Still shaky from the night before, the voice makes Angel flinch and drop a mug of coffee so that it smashes on the floor between their table and the next. Their face heats up, tired eyes looking with apology to the staff member who bustles over to clean up the mess that had been made. No matter if Angel had wanted to go unnoticed, surely Sofia would have seen them now.

Nikola’s eyes followed the movement of Angel’s hands, seeing what it was– her hand went to overlay theirs, lacing her fingers with theirs. “Don’t do that, if you need to- press your nails against my palm. I permit what goes into my home, and what is around my son, and I know you are not a danger to either, no matter what it is you may think, what I do not know, right now I simply want to help you. Let me help you Angel.”

       The pause makes their hand itch, twitching in Nik’s hold so that their fingers curl and nails bite into the other woman’s skin slightly. ❛  m’not good, Nikola... ❜  Angel is a quivering mess, and they have to press themselves into Nikola’s embrace to stop themselves from falling down at a sudden wave of dizziness hits them. ❛  I hurt people... ❜

“Y’don’t look like you’re doin’ too well, hun. And who knows if sleepin’ is the right thing for right now.” She shook her head, not wanting to force but also not wanting to leave her alone in this condition. “Can I get ya home or is there someone I can call for ya?”

❛  m’place is just over there... ❜  As though trying to make a point, Angel attempts to keep their composure through the terror which churns hot in their gut; taking step after step and feeling foolish for nearly falling.  ❛  I.... may just need a hand... I guess. ❜

“Shh, of course you so– you’re my friend.” She spoke softly, maybe it was her maternal instinct, maybe it was she cared for the person in front of her, but she wanted to ensure a safety in them in the moment. “Not a person deserves to be left alone in a time of need, not while I am around– come, please.” She urged slightly, gently showing her hand so the other could see it was her to wrap around their waist. “You will sleep this off in a safe place.”

     ❛  No... no you don’t get it — ❜  they shiver down to their toes, hysteria bubbling sharp in their mouth. The drugs pull at the anxiety which sits dormant under their skin, nails scratching over the faded white scars along the insides of Angel's wrists. ❛  you don’t want me near you son... I’m b-broken, tainted. I... I can’t bring that into your home please.... please... ❜

Nikola lifted her hand from the others shoulder, not wanting to cause too much…. she wasn’t sure– but she knew that this wasn’t good. She simply stepped a bit in front of her, meeting, or trying to meet, her gaze. “That’s okay, we’re going to get into my car and I’m going to take you to my home to look after you for the night, da’? Okay?”

      ❛  I don’t deserve your effort — ❜  Angel mutters, whatever having been put in their drink making their tongue lose and mind light. Without the solid wall of clear consciousness, their thoughts are going straight from mind to mouth. ❛  m’not a good person - I... deserve this, to be left here s’okay. ❜

dana.

After finishing her shift, Dana grabbed her coat and exited the building with a sigh. It was a long day and she couldn’t wait to go home. On the way to the bus stop, she passed a familiar face. A double take – it was Angel. Before she even attempted to greet them, they resisted. Upon seeing their reaction, she gasped lightly, stepping back instinctively to give them the space they needed. With a worried look on her face, she spoke gently. “Angel, are you okay?” She then proceeded to place her hand on their shoulder, “What are you doing here this late?”

       ❛  There was... this guy... at the bar --- I don’t... I just left --- ❜  Their words are clumsy across their tongue, bare shoulders shivering in the late night breeze and under the rain which had started to fall. Now Angel can see who it is, they latch onto Dana like a safety jacket, pulling the woman close. ❛  He might have followed me. M’not sure... ❜

“Why would you let me make a mistake like this?,” Pilar whined while looking at the other, her lower lip forming her famous pout. “Fine, continue to torture me all you want. I admit its cool on a level, but if I wasn’t freaking out inside, and out. I could give a better reaction.”

Listening to what they said, Keira took their hand. “Want to come to my place? I don’t want you wandering around on your own. Come on. I’ll take care of you, okay? You can stay the night.”

nina.

There was something about the night-time that, every once in awhile, made Nina feel inclined to linger outside a little longer after work. It might have been the way all life seemed to melt away after the sun went down and the streets were left absolutely bare, void of people to bump into. Or so she thought. She couldn’t see them at first, stumbling awkwardly through the darkness until their frame was lit again by lamplight. “ — Hello?” Nina called out, not getting an answer at all. Stepping further into what was hopefully not going to be the most awkward encounter she had that day, Nina barely touched the other’s arm before it flew up and almost caught her by surprise. ” — Oh, yep, that’s alright, Flinchy. I’m used to it, don’t worry. Can you tell me your name? Do you know what’s happened to you?”.

         Their flinch pulls an ache across one cheek, tongue flicking out to wet dry lips which are split in a way which flavours copper in their mouth.  ❛  's Angel. ❜  Comes their immediate confused response to the nickname, brows pulling into a dent above unfocused eyes.  ❛  I --- I think, s’mone put s’thing in my drink. It’s not...  ❜ Angel wavers a hand around their head, trying to get across that they can’t quite remember what happened; knowing only that their head is fuzzy, the last hour being a brown out in their memory.

gus comes to a sudden halt as the other stops in their tracks. they’re calling him mysterious, and that makes him laugh. a genuine, vocal laugh, imbued with  the warm tones of his voice and a sort of childishness, as though he were being tickled. “i’m sorry ––” he says in between giggles, shaking his head. “i’m just … anything but mysterious.” it’s true. gus is an absolute open book. with nothing to hide and nothing to gain in life, he finds it easier to be honest and open. “i like this challenge,” he says with a nod, though after features scrunch more towards confusion. “but you know … i’d answer anything you’d ask me anyway. i do know much more about you than you of me.” he glances above the other’s head, a neon barcade sign reflecting brightly in his eyes. “plus ––” he starts, looking back towards the other. a small, mischievous grin playing at his features. “with these rules, you’d end up not knowing anything about me at all!”

❛   Maybe not mysterious, just unknown to me.  ❜ His smile is contagious to them, Angel’s smile curling soft to the corner of their lips.  ❛  Oh, you’re so confident, huh? I’ll have you know I’m quite the tough competitor - but if you’re worried, we could always just play twenty questions. No winners or losers. Just to keep everything fair. I wouldn’t want you spilling all your secrets without knowing anything ‘bout me.  ❜ oh, and if their tone turned coy and low as they spoke, Angel doesn’t think much on it; brushing past the boy and into the bustling arcade filled more with adults like themselves than the kids from the daytime crowds.

Walking back from work after having a late night, Keira watched someone wander around outside, moving closer to them. Gently touching their arm, the brunette bit her lip as she looked up. “I-Are you okay?”
