clark kent x gender neutral reader. 1068 words.
notes: finally releasing this into the wild for @stevebabey! i'll spare you the whole big sappy write up ruby but just know ilysm. i'm so glad we met. i can't thank you enough for all the inspiration and encouragement- but hopefully this is a start.
warnings: none!
you're not a morning person. never really have been.
well, staying up until the wee hours of it, maybe— but getting up bright and early to feel the morning dew? pass.
apparently, dating a farm boy will change a person's perspective on some things.
especially one that smiles boyishly at you and says as you wish and means it, but that's besides the point.
no, this morning you aren't focusing solely on the gooey, warm, fresh-baked sweetness of loving clark kent. instead, you're in cuddle-warmed sheets (sans cuddle buddy, which is unfortunate) toying with the well-loved fabric as sun paints the room a hazy, early morning blue.
there's a strange feeling in the air. it's like nostalgia, laying in a room you've never slept in before and looking across memories that don't belong to you; it's like security, the kind being around clark always brings.
somehow, you feel at home and peaceful and scared to death all at once.
meeting his parents— his folks— had been a big, scary, significant step. getting brought home to meet the people that raised superman.
the people that raised clark.
the people that shaped this… darling of a man, that treats you like it's easy to be good to you.
but they'd treated you nearly as well, with warmth and good food and a casual kind of inviting comfort that almost made you wonder if you'd somehow met before and forgotten.
the fear faded faster than you ever would have guessed.
the house isn't alive yet, you know that. you can feel it, somehow. but you can feel the rumblings, the gears slowly starting to turn in the distant sounds of muffled dishes and quiet drawls in the other room and the low, distorted sounds of a news report playing on a tv you can't see.
there's beauty in it. the quiet, sleepy start.
so much beauty that you're hesitant to disturb it. hesitant to disturb your own sweet bubble, here in clark's small bed; hesitant to disturb a peaceful morning routine of the sweet people hosting you; hesitant to disturb whatever clark is up to.
hesitant to make him play host himself, worry about making you comfortable, when he could be spending this precious morning with his parents.
so you don't. you lay in bed, and you breathe in nice and deep, and you watch the sun start to properly filter through his window and you think about a younger version of the man you love sitting in this very spot and basking in those yellows rays.
you roll over, stretching lazily and curling up with the sheet dragged up to your chin, eyes wandering over pieces of a history you've just begun to learn about.
posters, pennants, tchotchkes— little mementos of a life you didn't live, little treasures you wonder if he'll tell you about.
all so… human. delightfully so. incredibly so. hilariously so, if you were in any frame of mind to disturb the peace and quiet by laughing.
instead, you just marinate in fondness, smiling like a fool.
--
your peace lasts long enough for you to nearly drift back off into a dream that smells like wood and safe sheets and faintly of breakfast.
nearly.
you don't quite make it, though. not when there are gentle but deliberate steps— familiar steps— on the wood of the hall. not when they're followed by a gently turned knob and a friendly sounding creak of the door.
not when it clicks shut again and weight sits behind you.
you hum in happy, sleepy greeting, blinking yourself back awake and reaching lazily back towards him.
as always, his hand finds yours, gentle and warm.
"good morning to you too," he murmurs sweetly, and you can hear a fond amusement in his voice as he toys with your fingers. "how'd you sleep?"
"like a log," you murmur back, basking in the rays of him like he is the sun as you steal a phrase he's used so many times. "how'd you do?"
"perfect," he reports happily, leaning down to press a soft kiss to your cheek.
that turns into three, because he spoils you rotten, and when he goes for a fourth you turn your head to capture his lips with your own.
you miss a little, hitting the corner of his mouth instead— he's a moving target, okay, you can forgive yourself that. especially when it makes him chuckle against your mouth, warm and comfortable.
he's home, and that shows in every line of his being.
your hand finds his shoulder and it feels so much more relaxed than usual. it's muscle, still, but it's loose with joy and safety and a kind of comfort you've never seen on him.
it's precious and it makes you never, ever want to leave.
the kiss breaks eventually, because even superman has to breathe— even if sometimes it seems like he forgets that when he's got his lips on yours.
"ma's got breakfast going," he murmurs into your space, nuzzling his nose against yours.
it's sickeningly sweet, but a few months of being with clark kent has built up your immune system's ability to handle such a thing. now, instead of breaking out in hives or going into a sneezing fit or recoiling like a scared animal, you hum softly.
"i like your mom," you say softly, stating the obvious because sometimes the obvious is what needs saying the most. "and your dad. they're sweet."
your instincts served you well, because he grins like a boy half his age and shifts to kiss your cheek again.
"they like you, too, y'know—"
"shhhh," you say quickly, playfully pushing at his (broad, you note for the thousandth time) chest. "you'll jinx me."
"don't be silly—"
"can't hear you!" you interject, rolling quickly out from his pocket of the world and to your feet. you pause to glance down at him and try not to grin like an idiot at the gooey affection all over his face. adoration, if you were brave enough to be honest. "i'm busy starting my day bright and early, because that's what you do on a farm."
"you don't have to," he assures you earnestly, sweet as pie and oh-so-hazardous for your heart. "you're a guest."
"for once," you admit, picking up a blanket that had fallen from the bed and starting to fold it neatly, "i can see the appeal in it."
angel!!! never apologize for being mia!!!! and omg congrats on grad school!!! i was also mia on this account for the same reason 😭 i hope you're finding time to relax and enjoy slower moments bc it can get insane and hard real quick ❣️❣️and trust im single-handedly making sure your fics never collect dust by the sheer number of times im just revisiting your masterlist 😭❣️💕
thank you sm 😭 i'm very late getting into it but ive had a lot happen within these last two years and it's just been 😵💫 but im grateful to be where im at currently. i really just lost my spark for writing one day and ive been trying soooo long to get it back. now that i have some more direction in life im hoping to get back to this blog at some point this year!! i need to start reading on here again and see what's going on. i've had a few ideas for fics over the years but i never finished them, so maybe i can double back and see. and in a perfect world.... i would pick up masters of none again 😭 i honestly Need To. but we shall see
the fact that you even reread my fics makes me so happy djdjdj i get moments where i just want to wipe them clean from the internet but ive held back! some are just not good but there are a few im pretty proud of, so that keeps me from going totally insane.
but yeah i'm procrastinating some work atm 😭 but i locked in and did some stuff yesterday sooooo.... it's not all bad? i guess? i don't know. i think im going to try and fit some time in to be more active on here, even if its just reblogging fics i read. i want to come back and be active again! WE SHALL SEE!
i wanted to share some love for my favorite writers and mutuals, and show my appreciation for the amazing writing u guys share! while this already is a pretty long post, know that i truly had to hold back essays for each writer listed because they all have such unique and distinct writing styles that need to be celebrated and widely loved :)
authors listed in alphabetical order under the cut + some fic links will direct you to my reblogs for a more in-depth reason why I loved that particular fic
@angelz-dust - one of my oldest mutuals and forever writing inspiration :') while she's not actively writing right now, i do have to include her here because i don't think i would've been writing if angel wasn't in my corner supporting me and my inane ideas! she really is and will always be one of those writers that kept this fandom going, and cared so deeply for the stories she was writing. i can very clearly remember when the idea for the "master of none" series came about, and given that angel is such a visionary writer, it was something beautiful and truly honorable to see her create and develop these unique ideas into some of the most memorable stories ever

@bloomcissa - i think i have such an unhealthy obsession with cissa's writing, like every time she posts something i feel it in the universe and come rushing over to devour it; even now, i'm slowly working my way through her masterlist because genuinely everything on there is so beautifully written, emotionally moving, and truly the best thing my eyes will ever witness. cissa is genuinely a trendsetter in my eyes, and i feel like her mind is at such high functioning levels of thinking that she's single-handedly feeding this fandom. but even beyond that, i think her writing is so imaginative and speaks to those deepest corners of each character, expressing and expanding upon what canon already offers and reinventing a whole new life with words alone—it's so mesmerizing how she does this with such ease and always manages to leave me with the feeling that i'm in some cozy corner of a diner where the world feels bathed in some fading neon

mirrorball (roy harper / reader)
@blushstories - recently came across vidia's writing and god it’s genuinely so well written and beautifully plotted, haunting in its language in how it strikes such pure and raw emotion into you—it's genius truly!!! im so happy i found her dick grayson blurb in the tags because it really did stop me dead in my tracks and consumed every bit of me as i read through the anxiety parade of dick grayson freaking out in "you're not answering your phone;" vidia's control of language and ability to string together sentences in such a way that it feels like your heart is being tugged forward without any forewarning is genuinely insane work! it's intriguing, it's hypnotizing, it's overwhelmingly raw and beautiful, and i'm so excited to go through the rest of her work

@bonesofapoet - another one of my long-time mutuals! kas is genuinely such a special writer, one that has always been so consistently strong in her language, form, premise, tone, etc. like she truly has mastered every aspect of writing and never shies away from putting it on full display in all her fics! i think this is something ive mentioned in my reblogs of her work, but kas' writing really does feel like a memory, something soft and fuzzy sitting precious in your mind and emerging from its place every now and again to remind you of life's love and softness; it's genuinely something so beautiful and awe-inspiring yet also incredibly aching like all memories can be. the gentleness that exists so profoundly in kas' writing has always been something i looked up to and tried to emulate in my own work—she really is the definition of inspiration to me and reading/re-reading her writing is such a reminder of that truth!!!

@capedrat - one of the newer writers i followed recently, but im already so mesmerized and in love with your writing—the control over language, the insanely descriptive details that softly play at your heart leaving it either broken or putty at each word, the natural dialogue that creates for such an immersive reading experience
top fics:

@cherryvvave - faithful and unwavering leader of talia nation, but genuinely one of the strongest and most innovative writers in dc imo, like the way each of her fics carries such a unique narrative plot that not only is so true and inspired for the character she's writing, but also so incredibly well-written. her kindness and love definitely shows in her writing—it's nearly impossible to avoid it as it sits so prominently at the surface—and it genuinely takes hold of each word, its gentle hold pressing pressure onto each sentence, punctuation, pause and ultimately your heart as well. she also just has such a way in expressing want and need, something that a lot of writers who focus on fluff and angst sometimes lack, but cherry has it mastered in how it beats and hums in the background of her writing and only naming itself loudly when necessary. i think it comes off the strongest in her talia and roy fics, but even in the soft and fluffy works, you can't deny this sense of want and love that wraps every character, interaction, and word. and i truly just love how her writing feels like its growing with every new fic; it just feels so alive for that reason, that it changes and grows and transforms with each character and therefore with us as its readers, and i genuinely love to see this progression in her writing because it literally only gets better and better with each new work!!!

@cinnamon-girl-writes - cinnamon truly lives up to her namesake because she is so incredibly sweet and warm, and i can't disassociate the image of the warm browns of cinnamon dusting that just feels so naturally at home on top of her writing, especially in her hal fics. there is something so incredibly warm and kind about her writing in general, but the way she writes and completely understands hal is truly so precious to witness in her writing; it's like watching a super8 video projected onto the wall, it's image becoming larger-than-life in how it overtakes your sights and overwhelms your emotions because the camera, in its fragility and volume, so easily captured the warmth and love you thought was only able to be felt by you. cinnamon is truly one of those writers that makes you feel seen in how she captures emotions, and im always so in awe with how effortless it reads, how profound these emotions are written with such care. especially in her hal fics, it's genuinely so hard to ignore, and honestly i dont think you could even try if you wanted—but, it is kind how cinnamon will hold your hand and let you feel so much in the space of her words :')

@citrinesparkles - my beloved citri, another one of my darling long-time mutuals that truly always inspired and supported me as a writer and a friend :') honestly, just lingering through her masterlist to find the babs fic (which is a fic that i actively always think about) was like coming home after being away for so long; that's just how comforting and kind and entirely beautiful citri's writing is, how her writing just invites you to have a seat at the table, or to get comfortable on the couch, as the night turns into morning and those intimate moments are shared in good company. citri is one of those writers that i look at and hope to embody someday with how beautiful and warm and tender she crafts her writing and the world within. there is something deeply moving, like clouds inching their way along the expanse of the evening sky just before dusk reaches, about her way with words and i hope everyone can read her work and feel the same movement within their heart :')

@clarknsun - i truly need everyone to stop what they're doing and read mina's stuff right now because holy shit!! no one is writing at the level of her, and no one is doing it with such ease and beauty either. mina just has such an expansive and beautiful mind, i love the way the world exists in her eyes and how it appears so beautifully written in her writing. i don't think anyone is writing the ideas mina is because everything feels so true to the character spotlighted. it feels entirely too unique to be placed on any other character but the one that mina had written into existence. and not only that but she manages to invite you into this impeccably warm space, as if her writing urges you to come towards the window and see the way the world is made beautiful by how the light touches the grass, how the clouds dance around one another in their pinkish memories, how the stars weep in their stories, etc. but im actually so serious, i need everyone to stop and go read "taste of something sweet," it's the perfect jason todd vampire fic ever..

@cloudscars - i genuinely had to stop myself from linking every heacanon, musing, fic, and post cloud had posted because truly everything their mind conjures is so beautiful and domestic and drenched in this pillowy softness that feels like coming home, feels like the world stops at the threshold of your front door. esp for a character like jason—which i think cloud truly understands and writes the best—there is this immense love and kindness that exists so profoundly in every word written :') cloud truly has perfected the art of yearning even while softly in love

@cowboysareloverboys - a new writer that i came across recently too, but ultimately stopped me in my tracks and had me massively yearning until dawn after just one fic; the way cowboy writes is, from what it feels like, from this place of immense yearning--and never shies away from all the associated emotions. the emotional narratives that appear so prominently through his writing, through those pockets of language that just stop you dead in your track and force you to breathe as the sun inches into a blue hour, it's something that (a) needs to be loved much more and (b) truly some of the most beautiful, poetic writing i've read on here in a long time. still working my way through his masterlist too and, while i don't read for some of the fandoms he writes for i know i'm going to read them anyway because cowboy's writing is so perfect to me. literally the embodiment of yearn cowboy yearn
top fics:

@delulupunk - i'm still working my way their masterlist, but truly one of the most under-rated writers in the fandom! im actually always so in awe with their writing as something consistently surprises me and gets me giddy about the way they write. not only do they have such an insane range of characters they write for, but they manage to capture the particular voices and strengths of each character and placing it at the forefront of everything they write. "saved" with duke thomas was the first fic i read by them and i was floored not only to finally have some duke content appear recommended to me but because this felt so true to duke's character; it made me so emotional because it felt like reuniting with a long-lost friend :') i truly hope they get more praise for the writing they do here because i don't think anyone is writing the way they are, the characters they are, and the stylistic manner in which they are! definitely a writer that deserves all the flowers

@fightingwithangels02 - when i think back to my return to writing on this account, i think river was probably one of the first writers i remember seeing in the tags, and how their writing reminded me how much i actually missed writing here! and river is such a masterful writer, and their multi-character fics are probably some of the best and my favorite on this site because of how they're structured; while each character is different and shine in their own portion, i think reading these parts together showcase just how expert of a writer river is because they just read with such a distinct flow that ultimately improves the reading experience. like each part in these multi-character fics are in conversation with one another even when they can be read alone. it's something that i don't think any other writer does as clearly and efficiently as river :0 and genuinely always leaves me in awe, it's something i hope to achieve in my own writing one day!!!

@filmcamerasanddice - i literally found their blog last week while running a deep dive in the kyle rayner / reader tag in a moment of desperation where reg had a fic rec post sitting, and i ended up spending so much time reading through their fics and idea musings; i haven't even fully gone through their ao3 (which, I'm super excited to!!) but i know that everything on there will be the most beautiful fics i'll ever read! and i do have to say that reg's writing is something that truly stops you in your tracks with just how beautiful it is; even i had to pause reading their jason fic just to find a better place to sit down and rake through every line, emotion, and poetic lyricism that was on full display. everything they write and will write deserves the same attention reg clearly pours into every word written
top fics:

@flimsily-flimsy - every time i think of ava's writing, the word that comes to mind is love, both in the sense that i actually am so in love with her writing but also in how love exists so strongly in her writing. and i think in order to write jason with the clarity and understanding that she does, her expert hand needs to be one of love—and it is undeniable that her writing does come from a place of love! she just has this strong grasp on the jugular of jason's character in how her writing just brings forth his ache and grief and intense love turned rage and vice versa. i truly don't think jason writers are doing what ava is because i dont think anyone really understands his character in the specific manner that she does. always such a fan of everything she writes for jason that it was actually so hard to pic my favorites!!!
top fics:

@froggibus - what even is there to say about one of the best and strongest writers in this corner of dc? the way froggi able to always have a finger on the emotional pulse of anything and everything she writes, how she never falters or wavers from fully leaning into those emotions, only letting us leave touched and moved deeply by her beautifully descriptive writing and character examination in the form of love letters—the writing, the characterizations, the use of language, etc. it all just comes together in such perfect harmony. i really hope froggi actually goes on to publish full length novels in the future, and also possibly write for dc, because froggi's writing needs to be shared and awarded!! genuinely my inspiration for complex and intensely detailed emotional writing

@gr0und-zer00 - probably one of, if not the, most proficient writer in all things delicate, adorable, and romantic! i think what truly makes me love zero's writing is the level of trust that appears both in the text itself but also on some meta layer—i go in just trusting the sincerity of zero's writing and the characters within their fics also exude this immense genuine care and trust that makes for every romantic scenario she writes be something almost otherworldly in concept. i also think zero is literally the silliest and funniest person ever and her writing definitely expresses that joy and laughter at times, which i feel makes for such memorable reads :)

@harbours-lighthouse - i feel like harbour is one of those writers that must have invented softness or at least brought forth this style of writing because truly the way it exists so profoundly in the corners of your writing—both in premise, character dialogues, and prose—there is something so gentle and tender about every word written! but as I was writing this I remembered how i’ve been hoarding harbour's dc masterlist in my drafts just so i could pour through each one of her fics with the attention to detail it deserves omg so trust I’ll be doing a mass reblog of all her works soon

@iridescentlightshow - i think lacey is another one of those writers that lives up to her username because truly everything i've read by her feels so magical and iridescent, as if bathed in this warm green light that feels like the sun shining through the wind-kissed leaves in an early summer. i think her writing really excels at showcasing reality, and doing so in the presence of an unnamed company—taking place in cafes, bars, etc. where there is this sense of anonymity but even in that setting love and kindness and warmth always find its way home there. and honestly, i think lacey's writing embodies this ilya kaminsky's tweet i saw years ago and haven't been able to find since but its words linger forever: everywhere she goes, there are circles of magic (loosely transcribed) and when i think of lacey's fics, there really are these circles and pockets of magic that feel so profound, it's truly some of the most beautiful things to see

@jasontoddkissr - stumbled onto this blog recently, but their writing has left me so speechless with its control and brevity yet ever-expanding presence of emotional weight and softness. they write with such a poetic hand that pulls at my heart strings in how soft and tender the world is made in their hands. idk there's just this beautiful layer of warmth that i just can't quite name yet, some line of poetry that wants to come through at the thought of their writing, but it hasn't been made clear just yet—with time, i know i'll eventually find its weight in words, but with having read some of their works already, im just so enamored by the soft, warm blanket that their writing has created and placed over me as i sit by the hearth and fire place. genuinely such a beautiful and skilled writer, and i really can't wait to go through every word of theirs

@jasontoddswhitestreak - while i don't think i was following them back when i was actively writing in 2020-22, i definitely remember their username because i always thought it was the cutest and silliest thing ever, but now that i have read rai's writing omg..i was doing myself a disservice not having read her writing sooner! i am a bit slow in going through her masterlist, but from what i have read, everything feels so idyllic yet somehow still grounded, like there is this romanticism present but also some resistance to said rose-colored lenses because the reality is always much more complicated, but so is the heart. and thats what i genuinely love about rai's writing: it doesn't shy away from the ache and the mess of emotions and reality, but leans fully into it and makes us fall in love in the middle of all that mess—it's a rare gift to see honestly and especially in how everything is paced and structured in her writing, it feels important in the kind of world we live in today where we're surrounded by nothing but mess and ache, but also love

@kitkatscabinet - there are truly not enough words in the english language to express how much i love kat's writing like nearly everything i've read by her is so unique in concept and just reads so true to the characters, it really does feel like im reading something lifted from the comics themselves :') but i think what i love the most about her writing is just the range of emotions on display, how the characters aren't held back by dialogues, prompts, etc. but instead they just serve to fuel and uplift and bring any idea to life. and the way that kat works so hard to bring attention to characters that are often overlooked in this fandom—she's single-handedly the beating heart of this corner of dc and she truly deserves every ounce of love not only because she's always sharing her top-tier writing with us (and for free..we truly do not deserve her), she's also just incredibly kind and warm, something that prominently shows in her writing. everything kat writes literally feels so electrifying and god i would genuinely be happy to just read ur writing until the end of time

@krysalla - there are truly not enough words in the world, in any language dead or alive, to describe how much i love holly's writing and overall presence; literally my inspiration, my favorite writer to ever breathe and also happens to be alive at the same time as me, my beloved mutual for so many years at this point, but im never not drawn to return to her writing. there's just something so magnetic and haunting and possessing about the way she commands language and spaces within crafted writing that demands attention. and god the way that each piece i've had the utmost pleasure of reading regardless of fandom has been a whole new level of peak; but it will always be the hypnotic way she cultivates atmosphere through tone, pacing, and references that make you feel so trapped in the setting (not that you would want to move anyway). every time i think of holly's writing im always transported to some other world, and for the past few years that world has always been the perverse, dimly-lit and darkened corners of gotham and arkham through the im transformed series, probably the best piece of fiction (fan or otherwise) i've ever read and reread, and probably will ever read. its truly been such an honor to see holly's writing grow and evolve and change over the years because now we have some of the most beautiful and haunted and electrifyingly gothic-like texts to ever grace our contemporary time. and ngl there is this immediacy that always rises within me every time i read and/or think of holly's writing (including the few snippets of original creative writing she's shared a while ago on her main iirc) that makes me yearn for the day i can find and hold physical copies of holly's future widely published writing—i think the world, esp the kind of world we live in now, aches for her acute and precise writing that explores the perversities and scarred underbellies of our desires. truly ain't no one writing the way holly is, has been, and will :')
top fics:

@lechelovestoyap - literally the sweetest writer out on the circuit at the moment!! her ideas and writing are just so precious and adorable, and i love that her fics all just play with these complex points of each character but brings them forward through entirely soft and cute entry points; even in her more angstier writing, there still remains this aspect of softness and gentleness that feels so necessary for the character—and further just speaks to the way that softness is both incredibly present and necessary for the spectrum of fluffy cute works and painfully heartbreaking angst! but also, leche is just an overwhelmingly kind person, and i think her kindness in how she interact with everyone bleeds so clearly into her writing, because every word, even in angst, still feels so kind :')

@milkybbun - truly never fails to satisfy any roy itches i have omg but genuinely probably the best roy writer out here with how she just understands his heart so clearly and openly? like there truly isn't any better way to describe it: it's as if you can see the heart beating on his sleeve, his lungs pressed to the arm guards of his suit, and in the subtle drawing of his bow manage to send kisses and loving smiles of care in his direction as if to bless his aim and accuracy (not that he needs it, but never hurts to have that kind of love and gentleness in ur corner). i also think she's probably the most inventive writers for roy as well, exploring his personality and emotional arcs in multiple scenarios that i truly would never have even considered, like hello the escape room au?? that's genuinely the silliest but deeply moving series i've ever read in how your writing is so easily able to just expose roy's character while also bringing forth the strings of my own heart! forever my favorite writer truly :')

@mistymisfit - we are all so normal about mistymisfit’s writing in this house omg but genuinely i think ria is such an amazing and strong writer, and even though she's on hiatus right now, her writing is one of those that simply lingers with you like some kind of ghost of emotional ache in the corner of your room—not something violent but every time you remember its there you feel its presence in how your emotions start to feel heightened almost. i think ria has such a handle on crafting these intensely emotional concepts in compact spaces, especially when i think of her jason fics there is something so deeply moving about each of them and how quietly hurting and comforting it all reads. im still very much reelings over the whole equating of violence to repentance in "im your man," but ria simply just allows for emotions to feel messy and all-consuming, while never bringing shame to that! truly some of the best emotional studies for emotionally complex characters like jason

@moviecritc - a visionary truly, like i think nora has such a sharp eye in exposing the jugular of every character with a string of the warmest, softest words—i'm never truly prepared for how quietly devastating her writing can be, but it always manages to leave me in some small, loved corner lost in thought about how deeply loving and purely romantic life can be, even in the briefest of moments, even from the unlikeliest of characters!! and nora is one of those amazing writers that so easily displays her range in every fic or headcanon she posts: some can be so perfectly silly, while others emotionally raw and quiet, and a few that feel like a river in how love just flows to the curves of each character. definitely one of those writers where you need to keep your notifs on so you're at the front lines of any post

@pixelbfs - neil's writing is so beautiful and perfect to me like i can't even fully articulate a list of reasons simply because my brain just keeps repeating "it's peak!" and, honestly, it is. but when my brain is finally able to quiet itself from the truth, i immediately think of the amazingly strong dialogue work, the lengthy descriptions that establish tone and pacing, the way they write movement that feels like geography shifting with each touch or kiss: everything that neil writes feels like life again, if that makes sense, like everything feels so tangible and real, like i can see this happening to people who are desperately in love with one another without ever needing to say it—but they do, because even if words fail, the world has to hear it in those quiet moments—and how that love feels like it's some natural part of the universe. neil is such a spectacular writer and genuinely im always so happy to see them on my dashboard :')

@pixxievomit - im still working through their masterlist, but from what I have read, i'm actively so obsessed! i think ziggy has such a masterful eye in capturing the very essence of these characters, widdling down the fluff to expose their truths and heart, bearing it open for all to see but doing so in the softest way imaginable. it's like your writing carries this hazy fog but the sun is still rising, slowly but surely, and it just makes for something that is so atmospheric and deeply true to the character being written about! and i think ziggy's immense knowledge and interpretation of these characters just makes for such a mesmerizing and real read, if that makes sense; it's like each character is given the utmost attention in how you animate them into life with your words. honestly i think i really could die happy reading only ziggy's writing for the rest of my life, it's really just that beautiful

@revelutionize - not to get sappy but if it were not for el, i probably would not be writing currently; like their writing truly opened that door and pushed me through, allowing me to actually sit down and write something all because of a three-worded phrase in one of their headcanons. even before those headcanons appeared in my line of sight, el was very much a creative writer that i admired in my lingering corner of things and just have grown to deeply love even more as they continue to write and share!

@smllvlle - genuinely such an amazing and adorable writer, i truly love everything that sisi writes because it feels so romantic and loving and entirely kind. reading some of her work honestly feels like going through a photo album sometimes and finding yourself falling in love with the history, the memories, the feelings all over again. there's this sparkling haze that just sits so neatly over her writing that honestly feels so unique and signature to sisi's work, it's definitely something that i haven't see anywhere else which makes for her writing to be something magical every time! every word and idea expanded feels so loving and soft, feels like running errands or grocery shopping with some lovesick fool but i'm also the lovesick fool in the scenario, and we're both just glowing bright with love :') definitely some of the softest and loveliest writing out there

@sozzoe - zoe is genuinely the writer of all time, and i can confidently say that i don't think any writer is doing what she does with the level of ease, emotional understanding, and brevity that zoe is writing within. and while her writing is so compact and concise, they all manage to prick you and expose the lines of feeling running through your veins, and by the time you're done reading you're just standing there shocked because you never knew you could feel this way! she's also like the master of writing for diana and kara as those two are always so human and real and achingly soft, even in fics that lean more towards angst; there is this undeniable softness that bleeds through zoe's descriptive writing that aches your chest cavity. and god, zoe possesses such an immaculate range of emotional writing, i can never truly expect where my heart will land by the time i reach the final words of any fic she writes, but every time she does post i know it will sting in some way and leave me with this lingering for hours if not days!!!!

@that-dumb-bunny - truly one of my favorite writers, i love bunny's mind and the way that she writes: it's poetic, it's lyrical, it's entirely meaningful in the way these stories are crafted around the character that ends with us even more in love with the character by the last word! bunny also just is such a kind person that it's hard not to see her heart in her words, in how she writes her characters, and in the situations she places these characters within. i feel like love can be discovered so profoundly at the edge of every word and phrase in her writing, and i instinctively find myself clinging to each one because it's so easy to lose yourself in her writing and character studies. bunny is definitely a strong hal jordan writer too, and probably the best out out here considering how much love, kindness, and understanding exists in her hal fics—even when they're angst it's hard not to see how it comes from a place of love, and i think all of her writing does this at some level. there is this notion of love embedded structurally into her writing, which explains why you're always so moved in the softest of ways even if your heart is being ripped from you

jason's spent a lot of time in the dark.
he's not as bad as bruce. he'll never be as bad as bruce. that guy needs serious help, and jason is not that. jason has a life.
jason is just... a little nocturnal. that's all.
and okay, maybe it's been too much time in the dark. maybe.
but it's where he can do the most good. he's more effective in the shadows. plus, y'know, gotham.
everybody knows what they say about gotham's nightlife. it's when the scumbags come out to play.
but as a result, this- bright and warm and vivid, sweet and vibrant and you- this is almost blinding.
it's cliché. he knows that. he knows that to his bones, and there's a part of him that would very much like to be snarky or run away or do anything other than watch you right now, but he just can't bring himself to stop.
you're gorgeous.
more importantly, you're cracking jokes and mingling and making people smile. sun on your cheeks and a notebook in your hand and a clever grin on your face as you check on people and scribble notes and keep everyone on track.
you've got your best traits right on display, right where he can't ignore them. right out in the open. everything that's convinced him to allow himself the brief conversations you have in the corner store. the wit and sweetness and charm that made him take you up on an offer to exchange numbers so you could send him a stupid recipe.
and he's maybe in a little deeper than he's been willing to admit.
he knew it, sure. knew your smile was going to be dangerous and knew volunteering to help you with your passion projects was damning himself and that this would all be a very bad idea.
but knowing and feeling are different things.
he's always been good at knowing.
this is feeling it. feeling your laugh like it's right next to him instead of across this stupid chunk of park. feeling it in his chest, right where he should not be feeling things.
...shit.
shit, shit, shit.
and then you turn your head to look right at him, and he feels that too.
and when you call his name and ask him to help move tables around, he actually moves forward and does it.
--
it doesn't get any better, by the way.
no, because a few hours later, your event is winding down in the golden rays of end-of-day, which means you look like magic.
and the event went well, so you're beaming.
you look happy and exhausted and satisfied with a job well done, packing up decorations while he folds tables back up and tries to ignore how much of that warmth he can feel radiating off of you.
tries. fails.
super fails, because you walk over with a bottle of water and a grateful smile on your face and you slide into place beside him easily enough that it almost tricks him into thinking this is sustainable.
"careful," you pipe up as he takes a sip, playful and making his survival instincts beg him to just leave already. "the little old ladies already want to sign you up for the next one of these."
"little old ladies love me. i can't help it."
you laugh, because of course you do- because you two speak the same stupid little language, and you laugh at his stupid jokes, and he keeps making them because he himself is stupid.
"seriously, though," you say after a beat, shifting a little and staring out over the last few people gathered. "you were a really big help today. we owe you one. i owe you one."
he should dismiss that. dodge it or something. you don't owe him shit. and debts, even stupid ones like helping you move some boxes and cases of water around, tie people together.
and for all the two of you have in common, for as well as you mesh, as much as you click and having you around makes everything feel a little easier, you live in very different worlds. you shouldn't be tied to his.
"let me get you dinner?"
he would love to say he's unaffected by that offer.
he should be unaffected.
but he's not. no, his heart stutters like the little traitor it is, and his mind unhelpfully supplies what dinner with you could look like, and "dunno, i have expensive tastes." is falling from his lips in a vain attempt to joke his way out.
which means you huff another laugh. another dangerous laugh that makes him feel a little like the sun leaked into his chest. "how 'bout that pizza place you mentioned? with the gnocchi?"
oh, the place he only found because he got thrown through their window by a ten-foot-tall crocodile? that place? what a beautiful reminder of why he should say no.
"don't your little old ladies need you?" he asks, gesturing the water bottle vaguely across the park to a small pack of women old enough to be great-grandparents.
ignoring the fact that they were definitely looking at the two of you before he gestured. old people are nosy. he can't do anything about that.
and, to be fair, you're young and attractive and sweet. they probably want to make sure he isn't up to no good.
(if he's lucky, they're not hoping he's up to good instead. mediocrity is the goal, here. enough to help you out, not enough to pull you any closer.)
"careful," you tease quietly. "i'll tell them you implied that they're feeble."
"please don't."
this is it. this is where he invents plans he totally has tonight that don't involve running on rooftops or punching people or getting shot at.
this is the part where he nips all of this in the bud before he winds up trying to lead an actual double life, making plans with friends just to cancel because someone needs him to suit up. this is his opportunity to not be a cliché.
Terrible and fucked up AU where after Harvey kills Jason's dad for being a dick, he becomes his new dad(s). (This is just an excuse to draw Harvey with baby Jason).
