As it is pride month, do you have any lgbtqia+ headcannons for Harvey, Jason or your interpretation of Gotham in general?

I think I've pretty much explained my headcanons on my *other* blog. Cough. So any adult followers, feel free to go and look at those there. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned them in a bunch of my headcanon posts here as well, but I'm too tired to go and look. Just sort by my tags if anyone is interested, LOL (it'll probably be under #reginareplies).

But, I will give a quick rundown of some. :]

I'm gonna just put this under Two-Dads... even though these are also just my general headcanons, my Jason's origin and timeline is quite a mix-match of different canons, hence it'll be more fitting to talk about him in the realm of the AU (and easier). Another one to add to the masterpost, yippee!

Harvey is bisexual, but his father was not exactly... the nicest... about his possible bisexuality and he started to grow suspicious of how often Bruce would visit Harvey and how Bruce seemed to be Harvey's only friend. Harvey has always struggled with choice, so he thought that he had to 'choose' between men and women. He has always been a workaholic and never got to explore his bisexuality fully until after he became Two-Face. Beforehand, it was just a few, rather dull, flings at university, and Bruce and Gilda.

Jason is also bisexual, but I think he leans slightly towards women. Jason, however, is quite inexperienced in his sexuality, considering he died as a child then spent six years focusing on nothing but training and honing his craft. He's still unsure about how attracted he is to men, but he certainly is! I actually had a little one-shot planned of Jason begrudgingly going to Harvey (and possibly Bruce), for advice about such. Maybe I'll still write it, IDK.

Gotham's attitude has shifted through the times like any other city. I think 'current' Gotham is absolutely fine with openly gay people and LGBT+, and they would need to be, because they have a billion other things to worry about in terms of the law and what's considered crime. Before that, when Harvey and Bruce etc. were kids and teens, the attitude was significantly more hostile, but the communities continued to exist and not back down from homophobic cops and protests. Some of those 'secret' clubs still exist and are popular nightlife places around Gotham. The underground layer of the Iceberg Lounge was one of those 'secret spots'. Of course, you still get a decent chunk of passively homophobic people. The tabloids that illustrated and nicknamed Harvey as 'Apollo' definitely had some unsavoury comments to make, and they would absolutely still jump at the chance to 'expose' big-named people as being in same-sex or untraditional relationships as many modern IRL outlets still do (I headcanon this with Harvey and Roman in particular, at least in the current time of the AU).

Bruce extends a hand to Jason as Robin, while Harvey extends a fist. Now that he's been branded by Gotham, now that he's Red Hood, Bruce extends a fist, and Harvey extends his hand.

Elaborating on this days later with another thing that's not even connected. Hmmm (me thinking again).

I really like that nightmare Jason has in #7 of TFZ where he's being attacked by all of Batman's Rogues but Harvey is noticeably absent.

God, there is absolutely no fucking hope for Harvey and Jason to further interact in canon because people (Tumblr) are so hellbent on focusing on the fact that Harvey killed Willis, and that bleeds out into twisted and, frankly, incorrect views of how they COULD work even inside the timeline where Harvey killed him.

And it's USUALLY in favour of Bruce, while conveniently ignoring the shit Bruce has done to Jason in canon (cherry-picking panels and bits of stories as usual to further whatever viewpoint they have) but I digress. Being pro-Harvey does not mean you are anti-Bruce, I PROMISE.

Yes, Harvey killed Willis. He did a bad thing. Oh, no... a villain did a bad thing? Wow. What!? Jason hated him for that? Duh.

He was a child who lost his dad. Of course he was mad. But Jason was just that, a CHILD. I don't think he had any clue about the skeevy shit his dad was doing, and future stories actually made Willis worse, and Jason more aware of this.

Still, yes, he wanted to beat the shit out of Harvey for it. Fair enough.

But people LOVE to bring this up and show those particular panels (from Batman #410 and #411), but they so conveniently forget to show the ending of that particular comic, where Jason's anger fizzles out and, because of Bruce's guidance, he ends up feeling SORRY for Harvey because Harvey is literally a mentally ill man who has not been treated and can't be because Gotham and Arkham is a shithole and no one wants to fucking help him EXCEPT BRUCE.

And Bruce helped Jason see that!

I'd show the panels right now but I'm so tired and I'm just running on vitriol for how hypocritical this specific side of the fandom can get, LOL.

Also, do these people just forget that... Task Force Z exists? You know, the whole ass run where Harvey and Jason work together and Harvey acts as a mentor figure to him essentially? Granted, TFZ's timeline is screwed up as hell and it's all over the place, but, hey, Harvey killing Willis was retconned at some point, but we can't bring that up because then that would ruin the anti-Harvey thing.

(Personally I always go by the Harvey killing Willis route because it makes their dynamic MORE interesting and complex and tense).

Also. That thing in Gotham War happened. You know, where Harvey literally defended Jason from Roman? Yeah, it was a short scene, but Harvey canonically - despite his past with Willis - sees something in him that he wants to protect. I could go into that but it's mostly looking at subtext and such and it's 6AM, so no. And I've spoken about it all before. Just check my masterpost or something, IDK.

DC is full of fucked up or weird dynamics, and they make for the most interesting stories. And when I say 'fucked up' or 'weird', I don't mean a total affront to God, but stuff like semi-abusive relationships, or relationships that have a sour past, or power imbalances etc. Bruce and Jason do not have (or, have not always had) a healthy relationship, and why should they? Bruce is also a traumatized man and Jason was full-on villain-mode before the New 52 changed all of that.

These characters are not real. I don't understand the vehement desire from some parts of this community to keep everything completely clean and happy and joyous. It's like... a fake performance of morality. Yes, happy endings and moments are great. Cathartic. And especially so in Gotham. But they are literally i n G o t h a m.

Also. I hate to say this because people on this site love to throw around words so much that their meaning erodes but. Ahem. The way some anti-Harvey, pro-Jason people talk about Harvey is kinda.

Forgot to mention that I finally got around to watching The Penguin a few days ago.

Wow. I understand. I get it now. What an amazing show despite my gripes with how the Reevesverse characterises certain characters and how it seems embarrassed by its source material.

I have many thoughts on it, which I've already talked about in my server but I digress. I may copy and paste them here later if anyone wants me to (or I may do it anyway).

But you know what's been living in my head rent free since I finished watching it? How awful and horrifying and terrifying this world's version of Arkham is. You know how Eddie described Arkham as 'Hell' in the film?

Yeah, yeah, he was not being hyperbolic about that. At all.

The Arkham scenes in this show are so viscerally uncomfortable. They do not play around with showing you how they treat inmates and patients, and how they try to 'fix' them. It's loud, it's unsanitary, it's claustrophobic, it's invasive, and it's all framed by a screeching, ascending violin soundtrack like something straight out of a horror.

"They treat you like a thing," - This is how Sofia Falcone describes it, and she really is correct.

So, considering Harvey is going to be in the sequel, I wonder if we'll get to see how this version of that fucking hellhole treats him. I'd LOVE to see it, as long as they get his character right, of course.

Goddddddddd, Harvey in Arkham is always such an interesting combo for me. I can't even fathom or articulate why. There's just so many layers. It's so tragic, and so horrifying to think about what they'd do to him, and what they already have done to him in some of his stories.

One person asked my thoughts, so that means everyone gets my thoughts. Ok, here is my list of pros and cons. PLEASE BE AWARE OF MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON WATCHING IT.

Pros

This show isn't groundbreaking in terms of direction or cinematography or anything, but it flows quite well and it's very tense, particularly when Sofia is on-screen. For being set in Gotham, the lighting is very good and some of the shots of Gotham are very nice. It doesn't take advantage of Gotham being dark and gloomy, everything looks good.

THE MUSIC AND SOUNDTRACK ARE GREAT. The violins in particular are used excellently.

HONESTLY clever writing and very nice foreshadowing. It's kind of like Breaking Bad lite in terms of its Crime Lord VS. Crime Lord plotline. It doesn't treat the viewer as stupid, and nothing is too on the nose. There's a really, really nice subtle thing where, in the very first episode, there's a scene where Victor turns on Oz's radio and Dolly Parton plays, and he scoffs. It's played like a joke because, haha, big scary man likes Dolly Parton, haha. And you literally never think about it again because you think it means nothing... until later in the show. I won't say what it is, but it's a really nice, minor touch that shows Oz isn't totally a monster, but it's like... it's... very hard to explain without spoiling. Genuinely just watch it.

The Arkham scenes, the Arkham scenes, the Arhadsjfjdhsfhsfgdsfgsa. Oh my GODDDDDDDDDD, just. No fucking notes. If you're not going to watch the show, at least watch the Arkham scenes. The lack of context might make them hit less. But oh my GODDDDDDD. Horrifyingly good. Oh my DENTTTT, I need Harvey tortured in this version of Arkham RIGHT NOW!

The acting is pretty solid all around. Victor's actor could have had a few more takes though, I feel. Sometimes he's pretty emotionless when I feel he should be quite emotional given his circumstances. However, he does get better as the show goes on, it's like the actor kind of got more comfortable with his character the longer he was with him.

Sofia is honestly a standout. Minor spoiler: She does eventually get the 'Gigante' title, but they put a different spin on it, a different view of how powerful her femininity can be. She's a really engaging character in this and you're sort of on her side even though she herself is quite vile. But it's not quite her fault. However. She is NOT a femme fatale in this and DO NOT let people tell you she is. I went into this thinking she was going to be that which had me like, UGHHH, but she is NOT that because people do not know what a femme fatale is anymore. I still very much miss the big, buff woman she's supposed to be, but they make up for it in my opinion.

Oz's stupid fucking purple and gold car is back.

This show will make you happy that Carmine's ass got clipped in the film more so than you already wanted. I AM A REEVESVERSE CARMINE FALCONE HATER. I'M HIS #1 HATER.

CHARACTERS FROM NEW JERSEY ACTUALLY HAVE NEW JERSEY ACCENTS, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS-

How this show handles the sex workers of Gotham. It's respectful and doesn't romanticize it, nor is it fanservicey. The film also tapped into this with Selina, but here, Oz's 'love interest' is the sort of head girl of a group of sex workers. She is a mature, middle-aged woman (REFRESHING) who is also smart. She's kinda boring early on and you genuinely don't think the show is gonna go anywhere with her, but she develops quite well later on... a little unsettlingly well.

Just this world's version of drug feuds and its commentary on it. Great stuff.

Despite my issues with Oz's characterisation which is down in cons, I do like how he's still a very sleazy, slimy, clever, cowardly, nasty little man. They forget everything else about him, sadly, but at least they keep his chattiness and how he banters with his men.

The twists. The twists feel organic. You can see some of them coming (which is a good thing), and some are quite shocking, but they sort of click and make you go, "wow, that actually... horrifyingly makes sense."

Minor spoiler: Oz does eventually get his iconic little top hat and waistcoat look.

This show does NOT fall into the villain-origin trap of where they try to add some sad, empowering backstory to make you feel bad for Oz. You will actually want Bruce to beat the fuck out of this man by the end, I deadass promise you that.

Cons

It's. Not. Pronounced. Fal-Cone. It's. Fal-cone-eh. It's SO jarring every time they say it, and they say it a lot.

Even though I do enjoy the grit of this universe, it's still so obviously embarrassed by the comics it's based on and by Oswald's original character. For example, there are several instances in the show where some of the mafia poke fun at Oz and call him a 'joke' and that people 'only keep him around for entertainment'. But to me, this is the show so obviously compensating for the idea that casual viewers know who Penguin is - a short, fat man with brightly coloured suits and a penguin obsession - and are really badly yelling at you going, "HE'S NOT A JOKE ANYMORE. SEE? WE'RE DOING A COOL THING WITH HIS CHARACTER NOW. SEE? IT'S GRITTY AND DARK NOW." It still pisses me off but thankfully the pros outweigh the cons (for me).

They barely mention Batman. At all. Which is very weird considering when the show takes place. And, to be honest, sometimes you forget that this show takes place in Gotham. That could be a good or bad thing depending on how you view Gotham as a narrative device.

Major spoiler about a character: Sal Moroni fucking... dies? (Yes, he's actually a character in this show). Oh my bruhhhhhhhh, this doesn't bode well for the sequel IMO. With Sal dead, who is gonna throw the acid on Harvey? Is it gonna be Oz like in Telltale with the light? Or some made-up character? Or are they gonna do the boring ass explosion thing again? Can't Harvey just get his real fucking origin on-screen for once? IDK, man, I didn't like that he died in this show. And like? IDK if I missed something but he dies from, like, a heart attack or something? You see him holding his arm in pain, so I assume his heart got to him, but this was never alluded to before unless, again, I missed something? IDK. It was stupid and does make me a little anxious.

Colin Farrell is great and all, and Oz is really enjoyable to watch in this, but you could deadass honestly replace him with any other mob boss character and NOTHING would change. It doesn't not feel Penguin-y enough. And they add some really... fucked up lore onto him as well? Like, some genuinely fucked up stuff. It makes for great drama and quite a shocking ending, and just an overall REALLY engaging show, but it's just not authentically Oz, which, again, is because this universe is so embarrassed by its source material.

Some additional comments I made were:

Everyone knows I'm the biggest New Jersey accent fan. But Oz should be one of the exceptions. In some of his stories, he was sent to England as a child and grew up there before coming back to Gotham. One of his origins literally has him being banned from England. He should have an English accent (personally I think he really suits Cockney), and the Arkhamverse handles that aspect of him REALLY well. But here he is a born and bred New Jersey man. Colin gives him a distinct voice, yes, but it's like... just not very Oz.

See, the thing is, they're very obviously taking TLH elements and anybody who is in denial about that is very silly. So, if you've read TLH, you will know that, whether you like it or not, it's very important to Harvey's canon because it establishes him as a very powerful Crime Lord. He kills the entire mafia and ushers in Gotham's new era of 'crazies'. But in this show, it's Oz who does that. And while it's very, very entertaining to watch, it's like… ok, what the FUCK are they going to do with Harvey in the sequel then? The mafia is basically gone. It does worry me a little.

If at any point during the second film while I watch it… and something major happens in it where I say, wow, that would required me to have watched The Penguin beforehand, I will NOT be happy, even if the show is amazing.

it just clicked to me that Harvey's coin flipping is alot like OCD compulsions, cause he has to do what the coin lands on(to the best of my understanding)

I HC Harvey with OCPD specifically! I talk about a little bit in this post. I think he aligns with many of the symptoms of OCPD.

OCD, I believe, is where the compulsions are unwanted (I am not diagnosed with OCD, but I have many symptoms similar to it), while in OCPD, the compulsions are things you 'agree' with, and you do them because they feel like the 'right' thing to do.

Though, in terms of the coin, I don't think what he does with it has anything to do with him having a form of OCD though, personally. It's more to did with his DID and his obsession with fate and the symbolism the coin holds (how it mirrors Gotham's justice system). He fidgets with it because it's an item of comfort to him, and he keeps it as a way to reclaim his abuse, which is something I've talked about many eons ago.

But, he does display other symptoms of OCD. Intrusive thoughts, the way he orders and arranges things and such. It's a valid HC to have for him!

The new chapter of JTMDA is SO GOOD!! I think it’s generally established that your writing skills are out of this world, but I really really like how you don’t completely throw away Gilda, like a lot of TwoBats writers do (no shade to anyone).

EEEEE, thank youuuu. :'D It's important to me that the actual writing itself is good rather than just the contents, so that means a lot!

TBH Two-Dads is basically a mix of how I'd write some of the canon blended with some self-indulgent stuff, so Gilda can't be left out. I'm VERY excited to write the next chapter between Harvey and Gilda, and what Gilda thinks of Jason, hehe.

I imagine most people read the fic(s) mostly for Jason, but nah, it's about both of them, so you're getting aspects of both their canon whether you like it or not, LOL.
