Do not let them consume you. They don’t define who you are.
it’s just one of those croissant days
we love a recovery
This doesn’t just strike a chord with me, it’s the whole gosh darn song.
that thursday feeling.
reading depressioncomix inspired me to do a little comic about my own day-to-day experience.
I’ve seen some comments on this being like “Oh he’s way too active this isn’t how severe clinical depression works!” which makes me a little sad because implying everyone’s experience of depression must be just like yours is insulting. This comic is about how depression still deeply affects me despite my attempts at a normal life but that it becomes almost mundane, you take a break to cry and scream and feel sorry for yourself but then you have to go back to doing whatever. I have almost no energy but I gotta live.
Saying you need to constantly be at your lowest and most dysfunctional in order to have Real Clinical Depression isn’t realistic. Learning to cope with this illness that will likely haunt me my whole life isn’t a bad thing.
due to personal reasons I’ll be in my bedroom making no noise and pretending that I don’t exist
At some point in your life, you will probably have a bad friend.
At some point in your life, you will probably BE a bad friend.
A bad friend doesn’t necessarily mean an abusive friend. It could just be someone who is incapable of being supportive when you need them to be. Or someone who you don’t really have chemistry with, but still feel an obligation to be friends with. It could be someone who expected too much of you. It could even be because of bad communication. It can be unintentional. It can just be a brief rough patch. It can sometimes be irreparable. It is not the end of the world, even if it feels like it in the moment. It’ll be okay. Just breathe, acknowledge what went wrong, and if it was your fault, accept the responsibility.
This is not only okay to reblog, it’s encouraged! Many of us have made mistakes, and we to need to acknowledge and reflect on them. Otherwise, we won’t ever become our best selves.
oh. maybe. maybe this it. maybe that’s the problem.
parents be like you can’t imagine how hard it is for us to deal with your mental illness
parents be like *annoyed sigh* you’re suicidal again? really?
hot take: moms need to learn how to listen to and comfort their daughters without making everything about their own traumas
a classic example
daughter: hey this thing you do bothers me very much and i wish you wouldn’t do it
mom: well my parents abused me and im not even as bad as they were and i had to sit through it so you gotta sit through whatever i do to you too
a common variant
mom: well i’m having a really hard time right now and you know that i’m doing my best and that i didn’t mean to hurt you ergo you are in fact the asshole for asking me to consider your feelings and change my behavior during this hard hard time i’m having
least favorite
mom: fine. you’re right and i’m wrong and i’m a horrible person. there. are you happy now?

mom: you can’t be mad at me. you’re not allowed to be mad at me. i can’t stand it.
daughter: There’s this thing that bothers me about school/life
mom: well I’m so sorry that I’m a terrible mother and that I can’t fix every problem
Kid: I am in pain and I am physically hurting.
Mom: well IM in pain all the time and it hurts!! I dont care you are in pain because mine hurts more.
Just a friendly reminder that fathers also do this, and it can happen to sons (and that it also applies to nonbinary parents/kids)
it’s never too late. go after what you want! it doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 25 or 65. there’s no deadline or fixed schedule you need to follow. starting over or starting late is okay! go at your own pace!
Life doesn’t end at 23. 30 isn’t old. Fetishising youth as the ultimate desirable characteristic in a person is actively harmful to both young and old people. Some of us lost our teenage years to abuse and recovery, and can only begin living when we’re at a different life stage. Literally knock it off, the lot of you.
time is hard
Recovery doesn’t mean being happy all the time. Recovery doesn’t mean having boundless energy and never showing symptoms and being a ray of sunshine at every moment.
You can still be in recovery if you have bad days. You can still be in recovery if you show symptoms. Recovery is having fewer bad days, coping better with your symptoms.
Recovery is having the coping mechanisms in place to deal with bad days when they come along so they aren’t as bad as they might have been before, and not falling into unhealthy habits that may have made them worse, made them last longer, or made them happen more often.
Recovery is prioritising the energy you do have effectively, and doing things that help to maximise that energy. Recovery is forgiving yourself for being tired and allowing yourself rest.
You don’t have to aim for perfectly, unfalteringly happy to be better, you just have to aim for better.
Me: I’m scared I might secretly be an awful person and I’m just fooling everyone into thinking I’m good.
Therapist: the fact that you care so deeply about being a bad person is proof that you’re actually good. Bad people don’t mind being bad.
Me: oH NO, I have fooled her too,
