You didn’t expect much from the party.
Truthfully, you almost didn’t come—crowds weren’t really your thing. But there you were, standing near the edge of the living room with a half-empty cup in hand, music vibrating through the floor. People laughed too loudly, danced too wildly, like the world outside didn’t exist.
You told yourself you’d stay for twenty minutes, then sneak out quietly.
He was leaned back on the couch at first, one arm draped lazily across the backrest, watching the chaos unfold with an amused kind of calm. Unlike everyone else, he didn’t look like he was trying too hard. He just… fit. His eyes drifted across the room once, twice, before finally landing on you.
You looked away instantly, heat rushing to your cheeks.
A few minutes later, you nearly jumped when someone cleared their throat beside you.
“You look like you’d rather be anywhere else,” a warm voice teased.
You turned—and there he was, closer now. Taller than you expected, with an easy smile that somehow felt like it was just for you.
“Is it that obvious?” you asked, embarrassed.
He laughed softly. “A little. But hey, I get it. Too many people, too much noise.”
Relieved that someone understood, you found yourself smiling back. “Exactly.”
“Good,” he said, like it settled something. “I was worried I was the only one not having the time of my life.”
That made you laugh, and the sound pulled his grin wider. He extended a hand, the simple gesture surprisingly gentle in the midst of the chaos around you.
You hesitated only a second before slipping your hand into his. His grip was firm but careful, thumb brushing lightly against your knuckles before he let go.
“Nice to meet you,” you said softly, realizing you were still smiling.
The music surged louder, and Rakai leaned closer, his shoulder brushing yours. “Want some air? It’s quieter outside.”
You glanced at the packed room around you, then back at him. There was something about the way he asked—not pushy, not rehearsed, just genuine.
“Yeah,” you admitted, “ I’d like that.”
He led the way, weaving easily through the crowd until you slipped out onto the balcony. The night air was cool against your skin, a welcome relief. The city stretched out beneath you, glittering and alive, but strangely distant compared to the warmth standing just a few inches away.
For a moment, the two of you just leaned against the railing, breathing in the quiet.
He studied you then, not in a way that made you self-conscious, but as if he was curious—like he wanted to learn the little details that made you, you.
You broke the silence first. “So… do you always rescue strangers from parties?”
That earned you a soft laugh. “Only the ones who look like they’re counting down the minutes until they can leave.” He tilted his head. “Was I right?”
You bit your lip, then nodded. “Yeah. I was about five minutes from disappearing.”
“Guess I showed up just in time.” His smile softened, less playful now, more real.
And somehow, the conversation just… kept going. About favorite songs, embarrassing childhood stories, places you wanted to see. He listened like your words actually mattered, chiming in with little comments that made you laugh until your cheeks ached. The hours slipped by unnoticed, the noise of the party fading into nothing.
At some point, you realized the sky was darker, the city quieter, and his shoulder had brushed against yours again—this time lingering.
“Crazy how we’ve been out here forever,” you murmured.
“i know right?” Rakai said, his voice low.
You looked at him then, really looked, and felt the faintest flutter in your chest. Like maybe this wasn’t just a chance meeting. Like maybe the night was giving you something you hadn’t known you were waiting for.
When you finally left, his number was in your phone and your smile refused to fade.
And deep down, you already knew—this was just the beginning.
