The UAW made sure my Grandfather was able to assemble bodies for Fleetwood Cadillacs safely, that he had good benefits, and that he was decently paid for his work. Thanks to a good union job, he was able to get a fresh start in a new country, to provide for his family, to buy his own home, to buy some property, and to put away some money for my education. He was fortunate enough to have a decent pension when he retired. Thanks to being raised in a good home in a good community with good schools, I got off to a good start as well.
