[Let’s meet again in all our future lifetimes]
My piece for the TEAM AVATAR charity fanzine! It was an honour (sorry Zuko!) to be invited; drawing these kids again after so long was super nostalgic! The text up top is a more formal way of saying BFFs (友誼萬歲 lit. friendship for ten thousand years). Cheers for supporting the project! STORE (I’ll have some copies of the zine up soon)

In theory, romantasy is the perfect genre for me. I love magic and kingdoms and dragons and political alliances. And I love angry confessions and will-they-won't-they and secretive looks from across a room and hands brushing before hands holding and slow kisses and that moment of realisation.
And yet, I have never read a book advertised as romantasy that I've genuinely enjoyed! Neither the romance aspects nor the fantasy aspects are ever any good! It's all half-built worlds, barely-thought-out magic systems, unlikable characters and inflatable-pool-deep "love" stories.
It’s admittedly for younger readers, but maybe try Victoria Hanley’s The Seer and the Sword. I won’t spoil it, but if you’re willing to overlook the fact it’s accessible to more of a pre-teen/young teen audience (i.e., not the most advanced worldbuilding but good enough in my opinion), you might love it. I always loved it. I still love it. It has that more old-school romantic feel you might be wanting.
The War of Lost Hearts trilogy by Carissa Broadbent offers a lot of great, intricate worldbuilding (and is fully geared towards adults). I’d almost compare it to a Dragon Age x Fullmetal Alchemist hybrid, but with pretty heavy romance elements. It is…not for the squeamish, so be mindful of that. She usually has content warnings at the start of her books that you can check first. There are actually two different types of romance in these books, but I’m not sure how to elaborate without spoiling things.
I will be vague and say there are two pairs of people this trilogy follows: one a bit “softer,” but not necessarily slow-burn. The other is slow-burn, but more intense.
It’s the only trilogy I’ve read in which the books actually get better as they go on.
Hewwo! So I'm working on my little project and I have these two characters that I don't know if I should ship. Any tips on how to decide if I should?
How to decide on whether to have two character be platonic or romantic
Are you shipping the characters because it is the expected thing to happen with their dynamic? In this case, not having them end up together may actually be refreshing! Example: The protagonist x the only girl in the trio.
Does it enhance the story in any way? Will it offer additional conflict and emotional depth? An intense attachment may up the stakes of the story, especially if it means the characters have something to lose now
Does it enhance the characters’ story lines? Would a romantic relationship add to their characterization or be rather redundant? If it adds to them, because they for example have to overcome major personality flaws to be able to be together, it may be really good! Navigating a romantic relationship is a good way to flesh out your character, but if they only end up together because it is the expected thing to happen (see 1.), it is probably gonna fall flat
Most importantly, do you want to? At the end of the day, there is no inherently wrong or right decision. But just remember that whatever you choose, make it interesting and engaging!
Test their chemistry. Drop them into a situation where the idea of them being interested in one another is out in the open and they have to address it.
If what unfolds feels awkward or stilted, it’s probably not the right direction to take it.
If the scene takes off and unfolds organically, then keep going and explore the idea further.
What I will say is this: if you aren’t sure, there’s probably a lot more character development that needs to happen so you as the writer can get to know them better.
Don’t think of it as shipping. Ask yourself whether these are two people who are finding a connection with each other naturally.
everyone say thank you to brianne battye who wrote for both cullen rutherford and neve gallus, two people who would rather fall on a sword than develop crushes but ultimately can't resist the indecipherable yearning of their huge, disgustingly soft hearts
