Almost like…..Lucien does know her. And that scares her.

I had this vision of Azriel breaking through his habit of idealization represented through a painting. The painting symbolizing his history of limerence and rendering women as untouchable ideals.

On the other end of this painting is Gwyn. She is the muse that finally reached back. She isn’t just paint and canvas, or the ideals his scarred hands shouldn’t taint. She faces all of him, and in doing so, breaks that barrier of idealism when he least expects it.

She meets him with fingers outstretched toward his shadowed and scarred hand. His shadows are present and curious, greeted with a smile.

It reminded me so much of the last line in Azriel’s bonus chapter where he describes the image of Gwyn as a thing of secret, lovely beauty. We can find beauty anywhere, but it is those moments that interrupt expectation and arrive unannounced that linger deep in the chest.

Remember when joining fandom as a younger person meant lurking for a bit and figuring out the vibe and etiquette instead of coming in on day one and calling people weirdos for liking weirdo shit in the weirdo factory.

HAVE THAT CHARACTER GAIN WEIGHT AS A SIGN OF HEALING: NOW

It’s almost as if the FMC’s real heroine journey hasn’t even started yet, and if she has love interest from the very beginning, can almost garauntee he won’t be endgame.

Like, it’s one of the most obvious plots when another male she immediately does not want anything to do with shows up. The desire is there, the emotional avoidance is there, the narrative setup is there. People just keep trying to overcomplicate it because they’re attached to a different outcome.

The fact that Elain is avoiding Lucien is exactly why people should be paying attention instead of dismissing it.

SJM does not write pages and pages of discomfort, awareness, emotional resistance, charged silences, and unresolved tension for characters she plans to make irrelevant to each other. That’s not how romance structure works in her books. OR any book.

Elain’s reactions to Lucien are never written like she feels nothing. They’re written like someone overwhelmed by what he represents, what the bond means, and what she herself is not ready to confront yet. And in romance narratives, avoidance is often just desire/conflict wearing armor.

The fact that Elain was interested in Azriel before her story even truly began, or even have her POV, is honestly why is not her endgame. Their dynamic exists more through proximity,while the actual emotional resistance and unresolved tension is with Lucien.

And in SJM romances, the person the character keeps resisting is the point.

What's absolutely fucking crazy to me is that Azriel and Elain could never address their 5 second blip and it wouldn't effect the overall narrative whatsoever. But you know who has to be resolved as part of his arc for it to work? Mor. Y'all are going to be so pressed when the Moriel situation gets the front row seat and the Elriel debacle gets completely forgotten.

It’s just that Elain literally went from having a fiancé she loved to discovering there was someone else who was her mate, someone she had been taught would consider her his property and, worse of all, someone she had never even met.

There is guilt in feeling that pull toward someone other than her betrothed, especially when it was never something she asked for or wanted.

The tragedy of it is that the reason Lucien is her mate is because he was made for her. If Elain were to draw up her ideal partner, it would have always been Lucien.

That’s the story I am looking forward to reading from SJM.
