As someone who’s been recommending Deadloch to everyone I know, I get quite a lot of feedback about Eddie being intentionally obtuse, annoying, getting under people’s skin, etc. And that’s all real. But definitely intentionally scripted too, yeah? There is so much we don’t know when she shows up in Deadloch. So much.
But then, I think about how much they intentionally evolve amidst their chaotic energy.
There is a close up shot of Eddie, right after Dulcie says she knows she is dead to Eddie, during the 2x06 apology. And it’s this beat where it’s like you can see Eddie reliving the morning, with Miki calling Eddie out for Collins being dead to them and for binning themself and other people being carceral, colonial thinking. And I love that brief capture of Eddie because it’s like “Fuck, I can do what I’m doing, I can keep Collins dead to me, and stay angry, or I can make this other unfamiliar choice now in my head.” And they do!
And then the whole thing happens again when Frank offers them a drink while hiding out. And instead of following the same pattern with dad - one their dad has loudly encouraged about Don Darrell and his own child all season - we see them ask quite vulnerable questions instead. And sure, it kinda gets heated and there’s jokes to break tension, but they flip their own script again and force themself to try to evolve beyond so much anger and trauma and pain.
And I love it. Because we only get six precious episodes of all this wild stuff happening for Eddie all in one season. And in less than 20 minutes they are taking action on a morning convo.
Eddie being a human of action and intentionality is amazing.
Intentionally unbinning Dulcie and, more importantly, their father same day? I love their emotional fearlessness.
Or they just really want to get and stay in Miki’s good graces so she will keep them.
Which is WILD - cause In my understood timeline Eddie and Miki haven’t even kissed yet. Maybe arms brushing in 2x03 or pinkies close at the ice box in 2x05 or that harried phone grab flustered moment in 2x06.
Whatever the motivation, pretty cool.
