Her questions were valid, it wasn’t something he was expecting to have rather he had been making sure it never got to that point. His hand covered his face in frustration before answering. “I don’t know, I just down know there isn’t some sort of manual for this. If there was I would have bought it and gone through every step of it to make sure I’m doing the right thing but there isn’t.” There was tiredness in his voice, the fear that he was doing something to screw up his daughter reared its ugly head. “I don’t know what she wants, I have to respect what she wants to but know that if she is a part of my life, she’s a part of ours too.” The last thing he wanted for Olivia to feel like she had to choose between the two sets of parents she now had. “I think she’s warming up to you.”
Ours – there was that word again. It seemed so final falling from his lips, like he expected this arrangement to last, like they were actually a constant, despite the changes made to their current routine. He wasn’t prepared, hadn’t expected to take this on, and was doing well enough under pressure. But she would need answers to those questions. How would this work – what role did she play in his daughter’s life, in his? Could her and the blonde reconcile their differences or would they continue to butt heads through this? “No one’s asking you to know everything, Aiken,” she reassured. “But I expect to be clued in if you ever figure it out.” He hadn’t asked her if she was fine with this – sharing a home, her life, or their relationship with this new child, or how it’d affect her, if she was on board or overwhelmed by the idea. If she was in a position to play house given her other responsibilities. But maybe he hadn’t needed to. The ring resting on her middle finger kept her from speaking these thoughts aloud, choosing instead to walk towards their bedroom in order to get ready for bed. “Are you sleeping here tonight or should I set up a chair for you in the other room?” she asked, changing out of her shirt and into one of his old tees. “You can fight the monsters under her bed or whatever.”
