Dateless for the night, Dean’s first order of business was to make his way to the open bar. He could never get through any of these town events without any alcohol in his system, so he instructed the bartender to whip up a strong drink. He was mid-sip when he spotted the young woman. Smiling to himself, he weaved his way through the crowd until he was right behind her. “What’s a pretty girl like you doing here all alone?”

Piper never felt uncomfortable being alone in a crowded room. She hadn’t bothered asking anyone to Sadie’s because it wasn’t her thing. She was fine coming alone and had found a few people in the room that she knew. The voice behind her made her turn around a smirk on her face. “You know me I always like to keep my options open. If I had a date then I wouldn’t get to spend time with you.”

Piper was right. Being dateless wasn’t always a bad thing. He’d prefer it less to be stuck on the arm of some girl and be inhibited from talking to other women. Sometimes it was much better not knowing who he was going home with at the end of the night. “Well, lucky me.” He flashed his trademark smile, reaching for the girl’s hand. “Buy you a drink?”

“God no.” Delilah made a face, “I would never argue that. It’s disgusting. People say it tastes like cereal milk and it definitely does not. I don’t get why it has taken off the way it has.”

“Cereal milk is pretty nasty too. Why would you want to drink what’s left over from your cereal?” He made a disgusted face. “Some things that shouldn’t be popular have become fads, and it’s pretty fucking annoying. You should’ve heard me two months ago when everyone was going nuts about pumpkin spice everything.”

There were very few people from his past that Dean actually looked forward to seeing, and Sawyer James was one of those people. He’d run into his former Lombardi’s co-worker a few times since he’d been back in town, but the two hadn’t really had time to catch up. Dateless for the night, Dean was happy to see Sawyer’s familiar face and have some company, even for just a little bit. “Look who decided to take a break from the Christmas decorating to have some fun.” His tone was teasing, the smile on his face playful. “You look great.”

Sawyer was being to wonder why she came to these town events. It had been years since she spent much time in Rockford and even back then it had been for summers she spent with her grandparents. It was nice to have a place that wasn’t in the busy city and there were a few faces she did enjoy seeing again. “Hey, now even the best decorators have to take a break. Thank you, Dean, you look great too! Are you with anyone?”

He’d never been the type to obsess over holiday festivities, but it seemed as if everyone around him would decorate two Christmas trees if they could. “Nope, I’m riding solo,” he answered with a shake of his head. He wondered why he bothered attending these events when he almost always went dateless. “Really just here to watch everyone get drunk and make a fool out of themselves.” He nodded his head in the direction of a guy who’d just spilled liquid all over a girl. “How about you? Where’s your date? Think he’d mind if I stole you away for one dance?”

“No, sweetheart. Christmas in a cup is the strongest alcohol you can find, unmixed with anything else, and you just drink it straight up, because who can actually get through these holiday festivities sober?”

“Did you accidentally grab the kid-friendly version? Because this stuff is amazing,” Stella said as she held up her small glass of spiked eggnog.

“What? There’s a spiked version?” Dean’s eyes went wide, unsure how he missed the alcoholic drink. “I’m still not an eggnog fan, but maybe it’s a worth a try.” He gestured to Stella’s glass. “May I?”

Dean had made the rookie mistake of putting off his Christmas shopping until the very last minute, so he now had to pay the price by braving the mall on Christmas Eve, surrounded by others who no doubt procrastinated on their gifts as well. He scoffed at the long line of children, queuing up to meet “Santa.” If he ever had kids, he would squash the Santa myth early, refusing to allow his kids to believe in a silly lie. The traffic surrounding Santa’s house and the large Christmas tree in the middle of the mall was obstructing Dean’s path. Desperate to find an exit route, Dean sighed impatiently, tapping on the shoulder of one of the “elves” on duty. “Excuse me,” he spoke in a raised voice, otherwise the chatter of the crowd would’ve drowned him out. “I'm not here for a photo with Santa, so is there any way you can just let me through here?”
