Ai no Kusabi characters & the “would you throw yourself on the grenade for your comrades?” test.
Guy: For a friend he would actually throw himself on the grenade. Likely to have organised the outing in the grenade field himself though.
Katze: Has, more likely than not, SOLD the grenade. Would get the hell away from the blast and THEN look over his shoulder briefly to see wethere someone he cared about was involved. After all, if you are dead you cannot help, right?
Kirie: Has tired to throw someone between the grenade and himself, then he tripped on their leg and fell directly on the grenade.
Riki: Has likely thrown the grenade himself screaming “fuck you all” and then lived to regret it. Would run and then have nightmares about it.
Raoul: Would get out of the blast zone and later come back to look at the effects on those not fast enough. He does it all for science. No need to thank him.
Iason: Would throw Guy someone else on the grenade and HOLD them there, if necessary.
Raoul: I fucking loathe Hippocrates and all those nice, meaningless, words...
Iason: Maybe you meant to say that you loathe hypocrites.
Raoul: No. I meant what I said.

Moral of the story?
Get inside the robot! Before the robot gets inside you...
Ai No Kusabi is getting an ENGLISH DUB!! READ ARTICLE AT ANIME NEWS NETWORK!! And visit the Ai No Kusabi LiveJournal for more info!
Ohhh! This is such a good thing, let’s hope that it might revive interest and, maybe, open the way for the reboot being revived.
Still here I am going to say: we Italians beat you to that! XD
It is the old anime, I know, but I really like our dub!
Riki’s voice is very good, and so is Iason, but the one that I think is spot-on is Guy!
WHERE CAN I GET THAT DVD IN ITALIANO?
The Italian title is… bad (sounds like a cheap porn XD), but the dubbing is fantastic and the notes inside the case are very good (we also have “special contents like sketches etc). The Italian title is “Il cuneo dell’ Amore”, it was distributed by Yamato video. I bought it almost ten years ago (far too young but.. XD). Sadly I cannot find it on Amazon (even though there you can find the old-as-balls VHS of the Italian AnK). At the times I found it in a huge Comic shop in Rome. You might want to check the Yamato video website here or the big Italian chains of comic shops like Star Shop.
EDIT: they have it on Yamato video’s site, it is HERE. You should be able to buy it online.
Thank you so much for those AnK gifs! It's one of my favorite animes!
A lot of Ai no Kusabi fans coming out of the woodwork! I’m happy you like the gifs. :D It’s a gorgeous and completely underrated production; one of AIC’s best! The sci-fi world and characters are so well-realized but I think even a lot of retro anime fans overlook it because it’s yaoi…
Let them ~ they don’t know what they are missing :b

XD
The name Iason means Healer do you think there is a meaning behind it or was just a random pick from Rieko Yoshihara?
Thank you so much for the question Anon. I love ranting speculatively about this kind of questions!
I do think there are several reasons why Yoshihara-sensei chose the name “Iason”, still I’m pretty sure that they have little to do with literal, physical healing. Iason is definitely more apt at, and keen on, breaking people rather than healing them. It should also be noted that the name Ιάσων, if derived from the verb ἰάομαι, could also mean (figuratively): to remedy, repair, make whole (or redeem if we take into account Biblical usage). Which is, in my opinion, much more significant to the role Iason ends up playing in the novels. There also is another meaning of ἰάομαι that is: strong, powerful. Thus Iason could be named so because he is objectively very powerful, but this is a very immediate interpretation, that leaves very little room for speculation.
Truth to be told the mythical Ιάσων (whom I will refer to as Jason for clarity) has not much to do with the medical act of healing either, his main “healing power” is about bringing the golden fleece back to Greece and thus grant a proper “burial” to Phrixus and break the curse plaguing Pelias and the city of Iolcus rather than any medical healing. Of course: the golden fleece has incredible healing abilities, but in my opinion, that is not the crux of the myth. The myth is about a purification rite, thus Jason can be perceived as a shaman of sorts leading the rite and, in that optic, his figure was used as a symbol by alchemists, but I will say more about that later in this rant.
Allow me to add the meaning of the name Iason as healer is very much important in the context Yoshihara Rieko wrote the series. As you may have heard, Ai no kusabi was published from 1986 to 1987 in the bimonthly magazine Shōsetsu June, which was basically ruled over by Kurimoto Kaoru a.k.a. Nakajima Azusa who won the Edogawa Ranpo prize in 1978 for Bokura no jidai. Virtually all works sent to the magazine were read by her and subsequently deemed worthy, or unworthy, to be published. What’s interesting here is that she had a very precise idea of what kind of work fit her conception of “tanbi” literature (that was the word chosen at that time to refer to this particular genre, in reference to anti-naturalism writers such as Tanizaki or Akutagawa): basically, the story had to be about a love “that takes on a therapeutic role that "cures” the lonely soul of an abandoned child, one of the protagonists.“ as Akiko Mizoguchi puts it (see "Male-Male Romance by and for Women in Japan: A History and the Subgenres of Yaoi”). But as you may have noticed, Ai no kusabi is not even your typical “tanbi” series. It is very much a subversive one, as it mocks many of the genre’s tropes: Riki couldn’t be further from the androgynous, long-golden-haired and starry-eyed protagonists of shōnen ai and Iason is very much the more beautiful of the two in an ethereal way, but his beauty is a frightening one, precisely because it is not human. Riki is also older than most of his novel protagonists counterparts (he is around 19 in the main timeline, when there was a clear trend to make protagonists younger at that time). Kurimoto/Nakajima was dead set on considering “tanbi” literature as “fiction”, with no tie to the real world whatsoever (even though some authors made “serious” works, discussing real social issues). But I see Ai no kusabi as being partly an answer to that statement with its masculine characters and serious tone (Riki very much faces his world’s own brand of racism and bigotry whereas Nakajima, although depicting beautiful feminine protagonists, was dead set on saying that “there was no gay people in her acquaintances and that people "didn’t want to read about real gays” [in fact she uses different words to refer to homosexual men, not all of them proper although they were largely used at that time]). The “healing” aspect is, in the series, turned into Iason and Riki gradually coming to see each other as people and not mere representatives of their classes.
Thank you for tis absolutely beautiful reblog! I must admit I am not very familiar with the editorial context of the time (I have read a few light novel, but not that many abd I am not familiar with the inner workings of this cultural panorama). Realy, thank you!
As for the last part, absolutely! This is why I like AnK so much. I think that element is one of the cardinal plot point, which shines through especially in the last novel as we see Iason save Guy and Riki choose to go back into the collapsing building.
“Your” is referred to Amoi in general.
“I bet you and Raoul became friends by pulling spider’s legs together as kids.”
“That statement is, aside from very insolent and incorrect in one of its core assumptions, quite the mischaracterisation of Raoul. He has always been far more interested in reassembling and reanimating animals. Dissecting to him is just part of the fun.”
AnK: X-Men AU
Which AnK character do you think would be the best avatar for the Phoenix Force? (Please state reasons why.)
My money is on Jupiter.
God-like powers: check
Unbalanced and hates humans: check
Wants to destroy humanity (in a way, by depriving them of human characteristics and human social structures): check
Sneaky: check
Alec would make a great Gambit (I do not know an empath in the X-men that could be like him).
Iason…. eh… THat is hard. He would probably be a good Magneto, even though Xavier’s powers would be much more suited for him. He could be Xavier and Magneto’s “cybernetic child” XD
Katze and Rogue share interesting traits.
So do Riki and Wolverine.
Intriguing points there. Frankly, I was expecting Katze as the Phoenix avatar due to the red hair, and somewhat similar appearance to Jean Grey. But Jupiter is a compelling case. I didn’t consider her at first due to her being a computer machine. Now that you mentioned it, she’s a big possibility.
Iason would make a horrifying Professor X. Since, well…he educates those in the Tanaguran/Pet ways. Imagine the kind of fuckery he would pull on Riki with Alpha Class mutant powers. If anything, I see Iason as more of a male Emma Frost. Reasons are as follows: Blonde hair, blue eyes, filthy rich, ice queen personality, and dry wit. Plus, as stated in your AnK Character Chess, Iason would be the white queen. Funny that Emma Frost was dubbed the White Queen of The Hellfire Club (an underground elite society). Raoul would be like her, too, for she is well read in the medical field; which includes neurology, biochemistry, pathophysiology and genetics.
Emma Frost would be a very good candidate for Iason too! Still: don’t her telepathic abilities rival Xavier’s? She is as powerful as he is. To be honest, the mind-effing is exactly the reason why I see Iason so well in both the roles of Xavier and Frost. After all brainwashing is exactly what he tries to do in canon too. All the more because Riki seems able to resist him to an unprecedented extent, which would mean that even in this AU Riki would have to have an inordinately good resistance to mind-control, which makes him so interesting to Iason. Then again I fear this AU would loose all the cyborg vs human themes, pity! XD
Raoul.. yes, Emma is a good candidate, but so is Xavier, with his degree in biology. Still Xavier has the issue of having an ethic.
Katze, nome crudele
Ma Kirie alla fine è un animaletto o un vegetale? (scusatemi, merito TANTE mazzate)
Ogni Raoul è bello Am-mamma sua!
Norris and his old man boyfriend
@crimsontanagura Thank you so much! XD I’m very flattered you think so, you are definitely too kind, I’m merely being silly with a fandom I like! XD Not to mention: your blog is a MARVEL (I cannot follow back because this is a small side-blog, but your contribution to the tag is FANTASTIC! Yes, I would be delighted to rant more about Ai No Kusabi and the characters I love (all of them)! Just gimme some time to gather my ideas! Sadly I’m slow at writing and still ruminating about Iason’s name (I ranted mindlessly under answered an excellet question about it a few days ago).
