Return of the Prodigal Son

I’m not sure to what extent this is a “you get it if you get it” piece because i don’t know how much people know about judo/dojo etiquette. But I wanted to capture the feeling of trespassing into a space which is warm and welcoming but empty, or maybe one which carries a sense of stain in your presence. Spaces, especially the dojo, are forgiving, but it is also not spaces that have the capacity to forgive. For Usami I think the dojo and judo itself carries a weight of contamination, and I wanted to question. in a sense whether that is brought by him or imposed on him. Whether something can be a place of freedom and a place of helplessness imposed from outside simultaneously. it’s hard to articulate in words which is why i turned to painting it.

The painting I borrowed the title from features an embrace…make of that what you will. I wished painting this that it would appear to people who understand the intimacy and respect of martial arts. ​and i think it is heart wrendingly tragic that a place of solace and affirmation became a weapon and a vessel for such an intimate intrusion into usami’s young mind. whether you view his grooming as strictly imperial or other wise.
