A Thorough Guide to Writing

Hi, all. I’m bluesimba. I’m making this guide to hit a lot of major spots in writing. Things you should know about me: I’m an English major, and I specialize in contemporary traditional fiction and experimental work. For this guide, I plan to thoroughly go over narrative aspects, but I also want to hit the more technical side of things, too.

The First Chapter and Point of View

Let’s start at the beginning. The first chapter will always teach your readers how to read your work. For example, if I include poetry with my prose in the first chapter, that tells the reader that the rest of the story will have sections of poetry, and this also emphasizes that poetry is critical to this story in some way. If the second chapter is written in a completely different way, this will be jarring for readers to read since your first chapter taught them how to read your story. Your first chapter forms a contract with the readers.

Point of view is also part of this contract. There are four major types of point of view.

ok but when a character is desperately in love but also desperately in denial and cares aggressively and obviously but tries to play it off as something else: “did i protect you? yes sure, because it serves my purpose hahahaha i’m too cool for feelings” and they’re so good at pretending that they deeply believe their own bullshit until a THING happens and they realize that oh no it was feelings all along how do

Character Development Question:

Does your character go to the bathroom first thing in the morning, or do they hold it because they don’t want to get out of bed?

A fan once recalled meeting Paul and Joanne at a Westport wedding party in the early 1970s. “Later there was a string quartet. Guests arrayed themselves on the sunny lawn,” she remembered. “Up behind me, Joanne Woodward sat on the ground with her back against the trunk of a big tree, her legs stretched out in front. In her lap rested the head of Paul Newman, who occasionally reached up to touch her face and hair as he savored the music. It’s possible I gaped. To this day it’s the most romantic thing I ever witnessed.” [x]

A few decades later, an employee at an Arizona desert museum witnessed a similar incident, years apart:  “One time I was walking between the main buildings and looked over to a bench where I saw a woman and her husband. The woman was sitting with the husband’s head on her lap as he lay down. You could just see the love as she ran her hand over his head and hair. I thought at that time, ‘My, what a handsome couple. Isn’t it nice that this older couple cares so much for each other, it just radiates. This is just such a wonderful sight.’ I continued on my journey with a glance back and I saw that the nice handsome older couple so much in love was Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.” [x]
