How would you like to change hoo. If they age it up I feel like for a tv series they would need to have a different story to bridge the gap so the actors are older when it starts.
Okay so off the top of my head on how I would change hoo:
Percy Jackson. Percy’s character development was really butchered in hoo in order to have him fit more seamlessly into the new series. This has been discussed so many times its stale, but there are several points: He’s still treated like an underdog in the new series despite him literally being offered to become a god in the last series. I’m not saying he needed to be fawned over but dear god he was dumbed down and trivialized too much by other characters - “Couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag” - which doesn’t really speak of a person who was asked to be in charge of his fathers armies because he was so adept at strategy; his achievements he painstakingly earned in pjo were stripped of him, namely the curse of Achilles, and all of the themes that Riordan built up in the Last Olympian surrounding it - Blessing vs curse, loved ones dying in his place, alienation from others, Annabeth being his true vulnerability – were completely scrapped; and finally just the painstakingly huge discrepancies? Percy hated Hercules in pjo but was upset that he couldn’t meet him in hoo? Um.
Frank’s Stick/Hazel’s Curse/Percy’s choice: These were plot points that were set up and were never really delivered because it either didn’t happen or was underwhelming if it did. Percy’s choice that Frank was warned about was just so? Not as huge as it was built up to be? That should have been a lot more impactful with higher stakes. Also, I understand that Frank’s stick thing was apparently resolved in The Trials Series but…. that’s doesn’t make sense. Narratively, it should have happened in hoo, and realistically, theres no way a screen adaptation will ever get to trials of Apollo to deliver on the stick expectation hoo built up because it would either be like 15 movies or 15 seasons and I just don’t want that.
Representation: The face-value of the representation in the books is really great. But a lot of people have brought up that its ill-researched. So fix that. Get rid of Piper’s feathers (and explain the importance of them in her culture.) Don’t give her kaleidoscope eyes. So on and so forth.
Deal with the post-tartarus trauma: A lot of the trauma Percy and Annabeth experienced was never really handled in boo? We got tasty bites but we have to assume those important conversations between them happened behind closed doors (And if we have to supply the writing in our heads, its not good). Luckily with a screen adaptation, were not restricted to just three or four characters so we could better see the effects Tartarus had on Percy and Annabeth.
Flesh out Gaea: Like? Her motivation is by no means as interesting or dynamic as Luke’s was? Just do more with that?
The final battle: The story is about the seven. The prophecy is about the seven. And only three of them fought her. Thats so boring. That’s so anticlimactic. The fight was literally only two pages long. So, flesh it the hell out. Put more emphasis on the seven of them having to work together to do it. I want a crazy huge battle scene. Disney’s got the money to do it, it better happen.
Leo: Don’t make calypso his girlfriend. He needs self confidence. Not a girlfriend to fix his insecurities. And calypso’s personality was radically changed to fit to Leo. Don’t do that either.
Oh. Actually kill off one of the seven: Hoo built it up the entire series. Deliver on it. Foreshadow it. Have it narratively make sense. And don’t cop out of it by having a cure.
Like? I mean there are a dozen other things and you wouldn’t have to age them up do it but here it is: Riordan is fully capable of writing a complex, dynamic, thematic story. We see that exactly with pjo. And hoo starts off super interesting with really great characters and cool story lines…. but it all just falls apart.
