“Haven’t read it, but I’ve seen the movie. And the movie with the zombies. But, I know that the, um, the book doesn’t have zombies.” He laughed a little. “No, none taken. We are.” He smiled slightly. Huey nodded. “So you’re the founder, cool. You should get your portrait done. That’s like… A thing founders do, right?” he chuckled. “Book club sounds kinda cool. Can I join? Or is this like, one of those ‘no boys allowed’ kinda clubs,” he said in a joking tone; he hoped she knew he was joking. “I’m Huey, by the way.”

“Ah, the movie’s good. One of the few book to movie adaptations that doesn’t make me cringe. The zombie one’s alright to, but no, Jane Austen was not a fan of zombies. Or, if she was, she didn’t write about them.” Annie laughed loudly, shaking her head. “No, no. No one wants a portrait of me. That’s silly.” She smiled. “You can definitely. We don’t discriminate.” She offered her hand. “I’m Annette, but all the cool people call me Annie.”

“I mean – It does seem pretty fun in theory. Just…weird talking with people outside of my class besides my sister, you know?”

“I understand that. It’s hard to branch out at first, but then you realize it’s super fun!”

As the woman explained everything again, Maggie narrowed her eyes. She tried her best to hide her expression. It wasn’t done so very successfully though. “You know what,” She sighed, flashing a smile. “If we can do it all with wine, I’m there. Bring some bottles, and I’m there.”

“Um... legally, I cannot do that. But you’re welcome to bring your own.”

Hestia nodded. “I haven’t really found someone that doesn’t enjoy a sweet treat every now and then.” She shrugged softly. “Oh, thank you.. I would really appreciate that.” 

“Of course! But I promise that everyone here is super friendly.”

“Cool,” he chuckled a bit. “That’s the sister’s guy, right? He seemed a little less chivalrous than Darcy. Like, in a good way. From, like, what I remember.” Maybe he’d read it. At some point. Maybe he’d get it on his phone so that he didn’t have to carry it around. Not that he cared what people thought about him; rarely did he care. But it’d also just be easier. “So, you run the book club?” he asked.

“Are you sure you haven’t read this? Yeah, Jane’s man. Janes probably my favourite, although I’m definitely a Lizzie. Darcy is boring and kind of a dick. Bingley is a little dumb, but what man isn’t. No offence.” She gave him a joking smile. “Oh, I wouldn’t say I run it. I started it, but we all kinda run it together.”

Hestia nodded. “Okay great. I’ve never really been to anything like this before - but I think any gathering can be improved with some snacks.” Grinning a bit she looked around. “Where would you like me to set them?” 

“You’re absolutely right, and sweets happen to be my favourite!” She smiled broadly at the other girl. “You can sit by me, that way you won’t feel lost.”

“Run it past me again. I’ve like, slept since you last told me? Details fell out my noggin.”

“Well it’s a bunch of us gals... although guys are totally welcome too, we’ve just not really had any come. We read a book - one person chooses one every week. Allie chose last week and she picked Little Women. Which is... a choice. But we’re not allowed to judge other people’s choices. That’s like an unspoken rule. And then we sit around and chat about the book and like what we thought and we eat a lot of food.”

“Cool, cool,” he nodded, listening. He hadn’t read it, but he’s pretty sure he’s seen a few versions of it as a movie. Though the one that he was recalling currently did have zombies in it, and he didn’t think that was right. “Yeah, I’ll observe for now, if that’s alright,” he said with a bit of a laugh. “All I remember is something about Mr. Darcy and how everyone who knows it wants their own version of him.” 

“Well see, you’re on the right track. You even know one of the characters. Although I’ve personally always been looking for my version of Mr. Bingley. Much more tolerable.”

Shaking her head she just smiled towards the other. “I love to read, so might as well share my excitement and thoughts on a piece with others. Really, I think it’s going to be great. I .. also brought cookies? Snacks are welcomed right?” 

“Snacks are more than welcome. They’re encouraged! You’re an angel.”

“I’m always in your book clubs.” She said with a small sigh. “You will pressure me to come back and I will probably come back. So what are we reading? Is it a murder mystery this time?”

“It’s never a murder mystery. If you want a murder mystery than you should start your own book club. No, we’re reading The Kiss Quotient.”

He’d seen the little flyer for a book club in the library with the little pull off number tabs to call if interested. Huey liked reading, and knew that he could count this as extra credit for his English class, which he needed, so might as well. “Glad I could make it, I guess,” he said, looking around a bit. “So, like, what do you do at a book club?”

“Well, we pick a book, usually as a group, and then we all read it individually and discuss it at the club. We’ve just finished Pride and Prejudice. It’s okay if you haven’t read it though, you can observe and help pick the next book!”

Maggie held up hands up. “Hold your horses! Calm the eff down before you blow my head off with excitement, jeez,” The woman laughed, shaking her head. “I ain’t makin’ no promises that I’m staying for the entire thing.”

“You don’t have to. But I’m serious, it’s not as boring as it sounds.”
